Starmer the non charmer

Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

It might be a tiny minority overall but it’s a large majority of pub goers.

The non smokers who avoid the pub because of people smoking outside won’t counter the smokers and possibly vapers who would stop going.

I think they should be allowed their smoking shed/bus stop area and nowhere else in the beer garden. Compromise.

Whammyammy · 29/08/2024 20:43

Pubs will close all up and down the county. And I say that as a non smoker

It’s more than a decade since I stopped smoking and I entirely agree with you. I wonder if the ban will apply in the winter when smokers are the only people who want to use them?

I'm so bored of these CPHQ posts.

OhmygodDont · 29/08/2024 20:55

Yes the old gents the ones keeping the pub running frankly. The builders/tradies after work.

Not the once a week family. It’s the old timers who 9/10 smoke that keep the pub open for the once a weekers.

I liked his speech.
To the point, sober, to the facts. We knew it was goingvto be a steep climb back to where we started, 10-14 years ago.
No sugar coating. Asking for togetherness.
Let me compare it to Rishi telling the citizens of the UK what a democracy is (LOL).......
Yeah, much much better. I do not feel patronised. I think Starmer knows what a democracy is and it runs through his blood.
I do know Rishi Sunak at least read it once, while he was telling us, plebs. Really. I will never forget his damn stupid speech! It was disgusting!

@cupcaske123

get used to it, we're going to have 4 years of this. everything is going to be the Tories fault, every manifesto point he fails to meet, every tax he increases, everything.

people voted labour, they got labour.

no one can say they weren't warned what it would be like.

Well yes ,the tories had 14 years to sort any shit but they just made people’s lives even harder ! Labour government are now trying to level up the inequality of the last 14 years between the rich and poor.
I will definitely take a big hit financially but it is the right thing for everyone.

Dymaxion · 29/08/2024 21:01

It might be a tiny minority overall but it’s a large majority of pub goers.

Is it though ? do you have facts/figures to back that up ?

People who can afford to go to the pub often enough to make it a viable concern and who also smoke are probably going to be higher earners ? £20 for a packet of fags and pint of beer, and that's very much the lower estimate depending where you live.

Buddenbruchs · 29/08/2024 21:01

StarDolphins · 29/08/2024 19:11

Exactly. Now the MN majority have got what they wanted, everyone needs to be quiet. Different when they spent years bleating about how crap tories were!

They were crap though ?

Bloxse · 29/08/2024 21:02

I think all politicians are as bad as each other - I think with Starmer, and I’m saying this as coming from a WC background - he’s disingenuous.

Preaching about how his family were WC, to make him look more like a man of a people, but, he’s shown his true colours, and turned his back on the people he tried to advocate for.

Him and Reeves are Cameron and Osborne in disguise, labelling the opposition as the cause of economic and social issues, to then unleash austerity which attacked the most vulnerable in society. I know people who were impacted heavily by austerity last time around - I was, but I’m an adult now - and they’re shitting the budget!!

Well for over 14 years I've seen the NHS struggling, schools struggling, children going hungry. It isn't a pretty picture.

TransformerZ · 29/08/2024 21:05

Only the God forsaken do things like smoke.
However, don't ban it in a capitalist society.
We need the revenue and it will go underground.
Ban smoking in homes, parks, public spaces.
But allow it in pubs and designated areas.

OhmygodDont · 29/08/2024 21:06

An official study? No.

But go by the local pubs, during working hours. Check out the smoking area then check out the inside but furthest away form the door.

Cheek out the vans rocking up around 4/5pm tradies getting out pack of baccy in hand.

talk to the landlord / landlady running the pub they know their regulars.

and despite the laws most smokers these days no someone or somewhere to get cheap baccy and fags. I could point out five shops locally who do under counter fags and I don’t smoke.

Iwasafool · 29/08/2024 21:13

cupcaske123 · 29/08/2024 15:39

I agree. I was waiting for a Churchillian speech about beaches but it was a bit of a bore fest. Don't understand why he's going on about the Tories, they're last week's chip wrapping.

I thought Churchill did reality, ,This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.
That wasn't a jolly speech was it, it was real acknowledging how tough it was and would continue to be.

Another one, "I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat'."

Not fun speeches, tough speeches that treated the British people like adults.

Justcallmebebes · 29/08/2024 18:36

Well we've had years of multiple, daily Tory hate posts. Why should the current government be immune and not held to account for their failings and unpopular policies?

The difference is that hardly anybody were to defend the tories. It was just free for all insults.

boobot1 · 29/08/2024 21:14

Kier is going to be a disaster. Rishi was a disaster. The problem is we literally have no viable alternative. Its crazy we cant come up with someone better than bloody Starmer or Sunak.

Maybe it is regional, I don't see many people smoking outside pubs just the odd one or two.

Please explain why you think the term 'two tier' is accurate and relevant, and before you do so, look up all the threads there have been on this topic - they contain a great deal of useful information that will prevent you from making mendacious and inaccurate statements.

He’s certainly ‘two tier’ when it comes to tax.

Starmer has been warning us how tough the budget will be, how we’ll have to accept tax rises for the better good. Why it was necessary to remove the winter fuel allowance from pensioners on £12,000 a year.

Did you know he is the proud possessor of a tax-free pension from his time as DPP?

Two-tier tax burden, if not policing.

”The legislation means Sir Keir is exempt from paying tax on pensions savings over £1m.”

Banning smoking near pubs will certainly help fill that black hole of missing funds 😬

Well smoking costs the NHS a lot if money

kerstina · 29/08/2024 21:29

I don’t smoke but my Dad did and he always said smokers contribute lots to the economy with the amount of VAT on cigarettes. Probably fund all their future operations on the NHS themselves if they smoke for years My dad did quit in the end but ended up with a big unhealthy tummy through comfort eating instead.

And why on earth is that ? Do you think unjustified insults ? Free for all because 80% of people were sick of them and their record.
