Starmer the non charmer

Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

@Gwynn - Blair inherited a vibrant economy though

How come the infrastructure was falling apart like schools and hospitals ?
Fine, a minority of rich folk were doing well but what about lesser mortals who depend on public services ?

He’s certainly ‘two tier’ when it comes to tax.

Starmer has been warning us how tough the budget will be, how we’ll have to accept tax rises for the better good. Why it was necessary to remove the winter fuel allowance from pensioners on £12,000 a year.

Did you know he is the proud possessor of a tax-free pension from his time as DPP?

Two-tier tax burden, if not policing.

”The legislation means Sir Keir is exempt from paying tax on pensions savings over £1m.”

Sir Keir Starmer criticised over tax free pension scheme - BBC news

I thought you were going to say he can draw his pension without paying tax. My husband has one of those, very nice it is too.

luckylavender · 29/08/2024 21:21

Well smoking costs the NHS a lot if money

And the tax generated from it makes the government a lot of money

I'm beginning to wonder if it's part of someone's job to post them.

Yep. An intern at the Tory HQ is posting them. ‘Make sure you post one a day, Quintus’

But unless you’re married to Keir Starmer your husband isn’t setting everyone else’s tax burden, is he?

Taking advantage of a perk is one thing, doing that whilst also removing £300 from a 85-year old whose gross income is £1000 a month and telling them it’s for the greater good, is quite different.

As is accepting the perk yourself then criticising the Tories when they removed the pension cap for everyone else!

Yawncat · 29/08/2024 22:36

They are all the same, this conversation happens regularly whether the Tories or Labour are in government. The political choice is apaulling, in fact it feels like there has been no real choice. The Tories knew the state of the economy so have stepped aside to let Labour deal with it for the next 5 years. Then the Tories will be back, telling us how much Labour has cocked up and we need to cut xtz. It's like a merry go round that I want to get off. Consistant waste of money plowed into initiatives costing billions that are then pulled by the consecutive governments it's bloody ridiculous the whole thing. I'm all for democracy don't get me wrong but UK politics is absolute shit show

Whammyammy · 29/08/2024 22:58

Well. We voted him in. Sit back and enjoy the ride 😂

AnOldCynic · 29/08/2024 23:05

I'm not after a charmer. I want someone with integrity to sort this shit show out. It's going to be probably painful, take time and be dull as dishwasher.

But I'd rather that than the smoke and mirrors and smug self-interest that the previous bunch of tosspots majored in.

He wouldn't be crying, he’d be taxing it.

2tierStarmer and his clampdown on free speech is absolutely terrifying.

Yep. Very dark times ahead.

I could be wrong but from what I understand the tax made from smoking is more than the cost of smoking?

Regardless, although I'm not 100% certain about the above (maybe someone else will know or maybe if I have time tomorrow I'll have a Google to try to check), I simply can't take seriously any claims of wanting to restrict smoking due to apparent concern for health. Not unless and until there's a massive social housing build.

I don't have the link to hand (it was published in the BMJ) but studies have found that private renting is more harmful to health than smoking. (The studies found that social renting was no worse than owner occupier - likely due to the stability both options provide).

Well it’s not exactly a challenge to have more charisma the Starmer is it.

ClockwiseHoneysuckle · 29/08/2024 23:44

We've seen so-called charisma with Johnson. Look how that worked out. I'm more than delighted to have a dull but competent PM.

With the two tier thing and another poster saying traitor I am thinking more reform type but I could be wrong

Daltonbear1 · 29/08/2024 23:48

peanutbuttertoasty · 29/08/2024 23:26

Yep. Very dark times ahead.

What free speech has he clamped down on? Oh you mean tweets in the middle of the riots suggesting its OK to burn a mosque down when that was happening so the person got convicted. Well you should know in the UK freedom of speech comes with responsibility and hate crime is a law already

MushMonster · 30/08/2024 06:57

I did not get anything against freedom of speech in his words.
He has been rather tough onbissues within his party which I do consider indeed freedom of speech and concience, but so far, I have not perceived any of that during the time in government. He will be tough, he has to. But he has not told us that we should not be saying this and that. Just that incitement to violence and violence itself will not go unpunished.

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 07:02

LittleBowSheep · 29/08/2024 16:49

And why shouldn't he blame the Tories for the mess the country is in?

If you don't think the Tories are to blame for this shambles, then who do you think is responsible?

I didn't vote Labour but I'm happy that the Tories have gone.

@LittleBowSheep

How does it help to keep blaming the Tories? His job is to take the country forward, not to keep whinging about the Tories.

How much better a position do you suppose we would we be in after the pandemic if we'd had a Labour government? (Clue we wouldn't be)

if you didn't vote Tory you effectively voted Labour.

OhmygodDont · 30/08/2024 07:15

I think all parties always just blame the one prior. If it was a new boyfriend it would be a walking red flag. But they all do it.

This labour will blame the tories as the tories blamed labour before then rinse and repeat forever. None will ever hold their hands up and say we fucked up.

OhmygodDont · 30/08/2024 07:16

On smoking it brings in 8.8 billion in duties per year and cost 2.6billion to the nhs which is 2% of nhs spends. From a fast Google.

Though the 2.6B figure depends to vary with some places claiming upto 16billion depending on the narrative of who’s talking about it. When Sunack wanted to ban it forever it’s 16B yet two or three other places claim the 2.6B.

newnamethanks · 30/08/2024 07:24

G morning OP. You forgot to throw some blame at Jeremy Corbyn in your initial post. Let me help you out. Altogether now, 'everything is the fault of Jeremy Corbyn but Keir Starmer, 50 days in, is also a dangerous pinko commie and wants to steal all your money'. Meanwhile, let's have a look at the line up of failed politicians who still haven't grasped reality and are lining up as leader of the Tory party. Hours of fun.

I still haven't had any rational explanation as to why there is a threat to free speech...

There may well be a long wait on that request pointy. Irrational ranting is the way to go apparently.

runningpram · 30/08/2024 09:20

Well I would say the situation left by the Tories must be really bad if a Labour gov needs to cut. Agree a little more optimism wouldnt go amiss but better to get the misery done when there is at least some political capital.
At least Rachel Reeves and Kier Starmer have some decent brain power between them

Spreading hate on the internet and inciting violence as well as perpetuating lies, is free speech and Starmer is criminalising it.
