Now is the time to set out his vision for the UK, to inspire the UK towards harmony and productivity with a huge majority, which he will never have again. Instead there is a speech , presumably delayed by the riots, which continues to heap blame on the Tories. It was dour, depressing and offered no motivation to the public. There may be huge holes in the public finances and tough tax rises may be necessary, but he also needs to set out a grander plan for economic and societal prosperity. Why can he not do more ?

If there is such a big black hole why have we just given £12 BILLION away in Foreign Aid? 🤨

You thick fxxks don't realise that's a bribe you know how China has hit loads kf Africa now because of their belts and braces approach by paying stuff infrastructure basically bribing them. Well we if we started again to do similar as it got cut it might mean we could win allies but also potentially stop these cou tries having loads of people escaping as life is shit to our country etc. It's not just aid

I agree. I was waiting for a Churchillian speech about beaches but it was a bit of a bore fest. Don't understand why he's going on about the Tories, they're last week's chip wrapping.

It's sheer folly to say we have to ignore the last 14 years given that that is the direct cause of the current shitshow. It's just basic economics that you need to know how you have got to where you are before you can take any steps to remedy things, and, of course, that there are no magic wands.

And because of tactical voting to GTTO. That’s why the LibDems did so well.

Majority refers to the number of seats compared to opposition/ other parties. You are referring to the popular vote.

There is overt wealth in the hands of a tiny proportion of the population, most of whom are making bloody sure that none of it gets invested back in the UK. Do you seriously believe that life is not doom and gloom for the much, much larger poorer section of the population?

Same shit that happened when Boris won more people voted for other parties but that's how our system works so it doesn't matter that poster is right a massive majority

I don't understand where the idea that Starmer is a traitor comes from - could someone explain? It's new to me.

Dymaxion · 29/08/2024 20:40

Love him or loathe him, it's five years before the next GE.

I am not sure calling someone names is going to make them leave their job, especially when you consider the job they did before, the middle class offerings on here probably pale into insignificance compared to the ones he heard in his previous job ?

And he has beaten Truss in days served which I appreciate is a spectacularly low bar for anyone !

It's far right dog whistle cos they didn't like him targeting the far right in the riots etc and they don't think he's tough enough on immigration and basically that's what they think about the left

Banning smoking near pubs will certainly help fill that black hole of missing funds 😬

Pubs will close all up and down the county. And I say that as a non smoker

GasPanic · 29/08/2024 16:06

If they wanted to improve the nation's health surely a tax on sugar, snacks and fast food would be more productive rather than clamping down on cigarettes for the umpteenth time.

Just so long as they leave out Walkers Paprika Max Crunch - in the spirit of taxing everyone else but me.

Totally agree. Why on earth advertising for excessively sized portions of UPF is still legal I do not understand. They need to start taxing food based on it's calorie density & nutritional value & ban vape sales unless on prescription for people trying to give up smoking. Ramp up tax on food delivery & takeaway services too.

Yes he is 7 days more than Truss but still 63 days off George Canning, who, to be fair, died in office.

Are we going to have one of these threads every day?

I'm beginning to wonder if it's part of someone's job to post them.

Yup I quit years and years ago but we all saw how pubs lost trade just by making people smoke outside. Make them not even be allowed a fag in the beer garden and they just won’t go at all. Booze is cheaper in Tesco and they can have a fag by a fire pit in their own gardens or pub shed or whatever they want to do.

Dymaxion · 29/08/2024 20:49

Re the smoking thing, a tiny minority of people smoke now, why is it that the hospitality industry should pander to that minority and ignore the majority ? Is that not a bit of a weird business model ?
And I say this as someone who grew up and went out in the days when you could smoke everywhere, pubs, cinema, buses, trains, planes, hospitals etc
