AIBU for leaving my DP's dad's BBQ?

Just a quick one because I do feel like an AH, but was IBU to leave my DP's dad's BBQ because he picked up burgers to put on the BBQ, didn't wash his hands and was touching everything?! I have contamination OCD and raw meat is my biggest fear. I was getting angry and upset and had to go, DP was mad as we had our two year old with us but I have heard about what e.coli can do young kids and it's a fear of mine..

True - I remember a thread where people said they didn't see the issue with taking a knife out of a drawer, using it to open a packet of raw chicken, then putting it back in.

😱

What was he touching?

Also E.Coli is usually chicken only.

Did you make a scene or leave quietly, Do you eat out anywhere else?

Edited

E Coli is most common from undercooked burgers.

I'm sorry but YOUR ocd shouldn't be impacting your family .

Look at all the studies about anxious parents and the effect it has on kids when one member is allowed to rule' what their kids do ' according to YOUR anxiety.. not good .

Your responsibility is to get treatment not just accept it is the way it is .

No . I would not of left . I would not of eaten the thing you were nervous about.. and left it at that .

Ocd isn't anxiety. And a lot of disability will impact family. It's ridiculous to say life for the family should be unaffected.

I'm not risking her getting sick!

She will get sick. Repeatedly. Over and over. She's a child.

And minced beef won't be the issue. Yes, we wash our hands after handling raw meat. But really, beef isn't going to give anyone anything. Steak Tartare?

OCD is a right bastard.

What is your problem. Just because you said something stupid and I called you out on it. Now your coming at me.

Growlybear83 · 24/08/2024 20:34

Sorry I think you were being ridiculous and you were completely out of order to leave.

Numsmetty · 24/08/2024 20:35

Don’t ever order steak tartare in France 😱😱

Steak tartare shouldn't be made of bog standard burger mince

Completely different to minced beef or burgers as these have been processed and more exposed to harmful bacteria.

StaunchMomma · 24/08/2024 20:37

Leaving was OTT.

Not eating and controlling what the kids ate (if there really was real concern, rather than just your fears) is reasonable.

Kids can manage on sides and pudding.

There was really no need to walk out.

Yea Gods 🙄 isn't there some sort of basic knowledge school people can be sent to?

it was definitely raw minced beef when I was in Paris.. a bit of a shock 😳

TypingoftheDead · 24/08/2024 20:39

I used to hang out with a guy years ago, and came to realise he didn’t wash his hands after using the toilet - I declined eating anything he’d made after that.

It should have been freshly minced beef though not processed factory mince like you get from lidl

It would have been fresher, and minced with more sterile equipment.

Switcher · 24/08/2024 20:44

Hmm I'm sure it's hard but I'm afraid this is a you problem, and yes, yabvvu

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 24/08/2024 20:44

startinganewforonce · 24/08/2024 17:50

It was chicken and burgers.. minced meat is most likely to contain E. coli.. he touched the raw meat, rubbed it on his jeans, picked up his beer bottle and touched people..

Absolutely gross.
I would have asked DP to have a word with him he could have poisoned the guests.
I am now afraid of bbqs too op. Yucks.

OhcantthInkofaname · 24/08/2024 20:45

Minced may contain more ecoli inside if it is not fully cooked. Yes, you were being unreasonable because you said nothing about him touching the outside of cooked meat.

EightChalk · 24/08/2024 20:46

This thread is horrifying! It's like a load of medieval people have time travelled to 2024.

I wouldn't want to go to your bbqs!

Didimum · 24/08/2024 20:49

Why didn’t you or DP politely ask him to wash his hands?

LadyGabriella · 24/08/2024 20:49

Yabu. The burgers were getting cooked.

Have you not heard of cross contamination, then? It doesn’t matter a jot that the meat was being cooked if the host did not wash his hands in between putting raw meat on the BBQ and taking the cooked meat off! This thread is a shocker.
