AIBU for leaving my DP's dad's BBQ?

startinganewforonce · 24/08/2024 17:43

Just a quick one because I do feel like an AH, but was IBU to leave my DP's dad's BBQ because he picked up burgers to put on the BBQ, didn't wash his hands and was touching everything?! I have contamination OCD and raw meat is my biggest fear. I was getting angry and upset and had to go, DP was mad as we had our two year old with us but I have heard about what e.coli can do young kids and it's a fear of mine..

They can and they should.

And people in wheelchairs should get up and walk. Fucksake. Clueless.

Takeachance18 · 24/08/2024 18:54

Handling raw minced beef then going around touching everything else, is really unhygienic and yes a major risk for stec e.coli, far worse than campylobacter from chicken (stec only needs a small number of organisms to cause illness), without OCD and around a young child I would be really twitchy and want to leave.

I don't think you know what OCD is actually like.

CuttySarcasm · 24/08/2024 18:56

Isn't Steak tartare raw beef? What's the issue here?

What was your expectation? For him to use tongs? But then the tongs are touching the cooked meat that have had the raw meat on them? Far worse.
I think YABU sorry

Personally I put the burgers on the grill with one set of tongs and have another clean set pull them off with. And I do wash my hands after handling raw meat.

You're not unreasonable, OP. But it sounds like your issue with your partner is of more concern. Do you really want to tie yourself down with someone who's such a wimp?

Teanbiscuits33 · 24/08/2024 18:58

I agree OP, and I don’t have OCD. It’s really poor hygiene. There’s a reason that food poisoning is most common at BBQ’s. If I saw someone handle raw meat, especially chicken, without washing their hands, I’d be put off. I’m shocked people think it’s acceptable given the ridiculous competitive cleanliness I see on MN regularly.

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 24/08/2024 17:46

What was he touching?

Also E.Coli is usually chicken only.

Did you make a scene or leave quietly, Do you eat out anywhere else?

Edited

E.Coli is found in cows, the most recent outbreak of it came from contaminated lettuce.
Your most likely thinking of salmonella

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/08/2024 18:58

You are being over the top. You should avoid going to barbecues in the future and if you get angry then find ways to deal with it and your anxiety.

Wtaf of course mental illness is for life. With treatment and medication it can hopefully be managed but it doesn't go away.

Did not want to say this, but oh, my dear, where do I start? Are you sure that whatever you are served in a cafe/restaurant/on the plane/as a school meal is has not been touched by e-coli contaminated hands? Are you sure that whatever you buy at a supermarket/market/etc has not been touched with e-coli contaminated hands? Are you sure that you did not bring anything much worse than e-coli into your house on the soles of your shoes? And rails in public transport/etc. It is best not to think of it, otherwise you won't be able to function. By all means, take precautions, but try to think less about it. I think this is the only way. I mean, at some point, you will have to let your child go to others' homes where they will be served sandwiches - who knows what hands touched them, right? (Same goes for pre-prepared supermarket sandwiches).

Such an unhelpful comment.
Someone with contamination OCD will already be acutely aware of this and depending on the severity of their condition may find it extremely difficult to be 'in the world ' because of these very things.
All the people on this thread saying get over it, deal with it, etc, actually makes me really sad.
My DD has contamination OCD and has had to learn to live with it pretty much all her life. It's an extremely difficult mental health condition. There's no easy treatment and it can be extremely debilitating.

Foxxo · 24/08/2024 19:01

YANBU!!

You don't need contamination OCD to have had that make your stomach turn and want to leave.

I've had food poisoning from uncooked chicken, it landed me in hospital and took me 3 weeks to eat properly and another 3 months to recover properly.

I'm very fastidious about not cross contaminating, washing hands, washing/disinfecting everything when it involves raw meat.

Knowing he was touching raw chicken, then not washing his hands and wiping it down his trousers and touching everything else would have had me walking away with my kids too.

I wouldn't wish what i went through on my worst enemy.

Eh?
I think she meant there’s support and help available for people with ocd. I have family members with ocd, one hasn’t gotten help and one yes. I do understand what a huge mental health challenge this is, and isn’t just something to be shaken off or taken lightly. But, she’s right in saying that the concept of help is available and should be used. There’s no reason for op to suffer with ocd when it can be helped. Ocd is very hard to live with.

I hate to break it to you if you have magically been cured you probably didn't have it in the first place

Foxxo · 24/08/2024 19:05

considering i use both a wheelchair and have mental health problems, i feel fully placed to say this stupid back and forth is fucking bullshit.

Mental health difficulties can be MANAGED, they can rarely be 'cured' in the sense they go away completely. Therapy helps you manage and keep them at bay to function normally on a surface level.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 24/08/2024 19:05

You absolutely can and should recover from mental health conditions. They are not there for life and thinking they are is incredibly damaging.

OCD is a wiring issue within the brain cortex and basal ganglia circuitry, as evidenced by brain scans.
To put it simply, the part of your brain that assesses danger and feeds back that it's okay and the part that receives the message, don't communicate well enough. Hence you can check that the stove is off. You can check five times, walk away and still think you've left it on. The message that it's off is sent but not properly received.

What mental illness did you have that's magically been cured?
