AIBU to say it's not "ect"

IceCreamWoes · 23/08/2024 21:21

I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

And "where" when they actually mean "were".

TheClawDecides · 23/08/2024 21:29

What pacifically is your AIBU?

Jeezitneverends · 23/08/2024 21:29

Also, if you made a purchase, you BOUGHT something

It’s a drawER, not a draw

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 23/08/2024 21:33

Today I saw an ad for a used Rot Iron gate. I think it was Wrought Iron LOL.

IceCreamWoes · 23/08/2024 21:33

OK, women (I assume) after my own heart.

Although with the bought/brought thing, I explained this to my sibling not long ago and they were genuinely shocked that one is the past tense of buy and one bring. They said they'd never been told (they are dyslexic to be fair to them) and now they'd had it explained to them it made sense. They just used to guess 😂 so I don't know, maybe I should be more understanding about ect. Do people not know, or don't care, or what?

Don't get my started on "could of" shudder

There, they’re, their!

lightsandtunnels · 23/08/2024 21:36

Pedants assemble!

I think if it's something informal then it really shouldn't be a problem. So long as you can get the gist of the message or post does it really matter? It's not a GCSE English paper or a job application after all.

Unless a German person was selling a red iron gate and forgetting the English word for red just defaulted to the German rot, then I'd be inclined to agree with you. 🤣🤣🤣* *
I think my potential scenario is unlikely. 😬

TeenLifeMum · 23/08/2024 21:37

I proof copy as part of my job. Drives me nuts that people write their instead of there and the wrong your etc. Also, I’m an apostrophe pedant.

However, it’s worth noting that the average adult reading age in England is 9 and in my county it’s 8. Plus 1 in 9 people are dyslexic.

PermanentTemporary · 23/08/2024 21:38

I sometimes use ect because it was a joke from Molesworth and I find it tremendously amusing.

I admit I need to get out more, but it's just a little pleasantry.

ManhattanPopcorn · 23/08/2024 21:38

I'd like to add, it's 'should have' shortened to should've. It's not 'should of'.

murasaki · 23/08/2024 21:39

The use of lend and borrow as being interchangeable grinds my gears. You lend to someone and borrow from them, it's not hard. Preferably don't do either....

It makes some threads hard to grasp initially.

And 'would of'. Don't get me started.

You win the Mrs Joyful Prize for Raffia Work!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/08/2024 21:40

I think 'ect' stems from incorrect pronunciation. Lots of people say 'ek-setera' instead of 'et-setera', so maybe it's not surprising they put the 'c' after the e' in the abbreviation!

DickEmery · 23/08/2024 21:41

You are been mean OP.

I used ect when I was a kid because I thought it was the T in cetera rather than the T in et.

I'm an editor. But I can easily scroll past errors when I'm not being paid to spot them. Life's too short to get stressed over stuff you can't change.

I actually picked my insurance choice for university (didn't end up going, got first choice) as it had the Molesworth cartoon about chasing a gerund on the door of the faculty.

Well it's as good a reason as any other.....

Funnywonder · 23/08/2024 21:49

YANBU and I disagree with pp. It's not mean to say it irritates you. It would definitely be mean though, if you pointed it out on the thread where you saw it. But it doesn't sound as though you did that.

Edenspirits73 · 23/08/2024 21:52

YABU for getting are grammar wrong. People of this cuntry need to get a grip..

I resisted! I also want to tell people not to quote the (sometimes incredibly lengthy) OP when they reply, but I have managed to stop myself doing that as well.
