I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

Or more accurately there are.

StarryDance · 23/08/2024 23:18

I don't need your permission to post on MN. Neither does anyone else.

The one that is bugging me recently is "free reign". Seen it so often on various threads that I started to doubt myself. Hint, it's about horses not royalty.

This is honestly the first post on mumsnet I haven't understood what do you mean where they can't lend and borrow

Sorry, you lend money to someone, so you give them cash, they owe it back to you. When you borrow, you are taking someone else's cash and should give it back.

Some people seem to use the words for both.

somethingothertoday · 23/08/2024 23:23

I do think auto correct is guilty too...

Mostlyoblivious · 23/08/2024 23:25

This thread reminds me of the end of the episode in friends where chandler is bet he can’t go a week without taking the mic out of his friends!

youve987456 · 23/08/2024 23:26

I used to get annoyed by it all and it does still get to me at times but since listening to Stephen Fry talk about language pedantry I try hard not to. Really interesting listen.

Ha ha fucking ha.

murasaki · 23/08/2024 23:27

So Anne next door lent you a tenner to buy groceries. She didn't borrow it to you, you borrowed it from her.

You lent Anne a tenner to get food, she borrowed it from you. The person raking the money is the borrowed. Like a mortgage or a bank loan. The bank lent the money, you borrowed it. Borrow is what the receiver does.

murasaki · 23/08/2024 23:31

I've now typed the word borrow so many times it is looking odd.

The whole thing does make you despair about schooling though, doesn't it.And parenting in some cases.

Iv never seen anyone say that but that would confuse me to but if someone is saying the wrong type of there or saying me and Dave instead of Dave and I, I can still 100% understand them so that's fine with me. I think people need to be mindful of not only do people have different levels of education but also are working in very different types of jobs so if you work in admin or education you're writing correctly and professionally on a daily basis but if your like me and work in retail I couldn't tell you the last time I've written anything let alone anything that had to be written properly and you do lose the basics when you haven't written a letter in 10 years.

I'm surprised there has never been a thread like this on MN before.

You've not been to pedants corner?

RockyRogue1001 · 23/08/2024 23:36

For me, it's curb on the parking threads.
🤬😖

murasaki · 23/08/2024 23:36

Oh the me and I thing is easily understood when reading and hearing , the borrow /lend thing less so as it changes the sense of what's being said. Totally get that verbally. But was it not taught pre GCSE re me and I? Either way, sorry if you think I've been mean, it was a snarky thread for pedantry, not meant to offend as such.

sarahzbaker · 23/08/2024 23:37

God, the draw instead of drawer makes me fizz and slit my eyes meanly.
Eats, shoots and leaves book is v funny too

It’s a drawER, not a draw

Everyone knows it's a chester draws.

I saw an ad the other day for 'Chester's' long lost sibling

NESTER TABLES! Cracked me up lol

PS They meant nest of tables lol

Especially the parenting. There's a lot to be said for teaching your children not to take the piss out of and bully people who for many reason struggle with SPAG.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 23/08/2024 23:40

@IceCreamWoes It might be rude to call people out, but how else will they learn that they are wrong? Some people go on about boarders when they mean the borders between countries or even flower borders. They do not know the difference and no one has thought to tell them so they carry on merrily thinking they are correct for the rest of their lives!

No you've not offended me at all I think we just view things differently. Spelling punctuation and grammar just isn't important to me aslong as I'm understood. However I would imagine they're things that drive me crazy that you wouldn't think twice about.

Check your privilege here. Mocking those less educated than you on a forum that you know they will read? Would you say this to anyone’s face? Thought not.

In my second job out of university, in an HE institution, a few of us used to amuse ourselves by printing out egregious wrong usage of apostrophes and sending them in the internal mail to each other. I think the finest moment was when my friend found a misplaced one on the Oxford University website. Happy days.

Unfortunately what seems more usual is that people now say “me and Claire”. Or even “myself and Claire”.

I actually do find this hard!! If I said ‘Claire and me were going to the shops’ but I took Claire out the equation, I would say ‘I was going to the shop’ not ‘I were going to the shop.’ So is it ‘Claire and I was going to the shops’ ? Or still ‘were.’ This is a genuine question please don’t take the piss 😭

I’ve seen people on here insisting that the bought/brought thing is regional. It’s NOT. It’s what happens when people never read a book or anything other than social media.

I disagree. I have lived and worked all over the UK and the only noticed being commonplace in the West Midlands. That was long before social media or even the internet existed. A colleague of mine carried on doing it even after I pointed it out. He had a PhD so I suspect he had read a book or two.

Pedants' corner was interesting to learn about language before it was over taken by people who just used it to take the piss out of some MN users.

But not everybody cares if their wrong. I know my English is terrible and I'm ok with that. However if everytime I wrote something someone corrected me that would annoy me
