AIBU to say it's not "ect"

I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

It is hard to resist though. I try not to point it out, but really want to.

Whatdoyoureckonthen · 23/08/2024 21:56

The use of lend and borrowed on mumsnet makes me cringe! "I borrowed him £50 and he hasn't paid me back" arghhhhh

TheClawDecides · 23/08/2024 21:29

What pacifically is your AIBU?

@TheClawDecides nice 😊

I've always assumed this is a regional thing. Is it really just people misusing the opposite word for no reason? So strange!

Not regional just uneducated.

DoIWantTo · 23/08/2024 21:58

“I could care less” to indicate having no interest in something. It’s COULDN’T. You COULD NOT care less, meaning you care so little about the thing you COULD NOT care any less about it. Could care less mean you do care about it and wish you didn’t care quite so much!!

I definitely need to get out more.

StarryDance · 23/08/2024 21:58

I'm surprised there has never been a thread like this on MN before.

Maybe they'll read this one and we won't need another.

Americans say "could care less" and I always think if they thought about it for about 3 seconds, they'd realise it was making the opposite statement they were wanting to make!

And "where" when they actually mean "were".

That’s my pet hate.

Abitofalark · 23/08/2024 22:00

Don't get me started on 'they'.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 23/08/2024 22:01

Or I learnt that to him!! Aaahhhh!

They is useful though, in the right context. If you don't know someone's gender for example.
"I really like this artist. Does anyone know who they are?".

@IceCreamWoes I’ve had someone stand and argue with me that I was wrong, “could care less” definitely means he didn’t care at all. I was tearing my hair out by the end of that convo 😂

Philandbill · 23/08/2024 22:02

YANBU, it is very irritating.

American, out of interest? I haven't heard anyone else use it.

I still can't say "another think coming though" although I accept it's grammatically correct. I just say another thing coming really quickly so it's ambiguous 😂

I remember my mum drilling the fact that it is 'similar to' and 'different from' into my sister over the dinner table. So 'different to' also annoys me.

I am easily annoyed by this stuff, clearly!

Until the next bored clever dick comes along anyway.

murasaki · 23/08/2024 22:10

English is an odd language to learn, so second language people get a pass from me, but I do wonder if this laxness/mangling amongst native speakers happens in say France, Germany or Spain. I'd speculate that it doesn't to the same degree, would be interested to hear about that.

Instaflan · 23/08/2024 22:10

His when they mean he’s. “His stunk the bathroom out”.

You see that a lot here, but based on other poster saying average reading age is 9 then I get it now.

DinnaeFashYersel · 23/08/2024 22:10

Your defiantly not wrong.

verityrosa · 23/08/2024 22:14

My husband genuinely thought that the word thought is ‘fort’. I only noticed it when he sent me ‘I’ve fort of something we can do this weekend’ at the start of our relationship. I didn’t say anything until it happened again : ‘any forts on that?’ 😭😭

OP - I believe @StaStarryDance might just have been employing a little sarcasm there. I, for one, have read many a thread on the same subject. Have to say I agree with your original post, though 😊.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 23/08/2024 22:18

I see "I am a women" a lot. Oddly no one ever seems to use 'men' when they need 'man'

StarryDance · 23/08/2024 22:18

I was reading a thread the other day where someone was asking for advice and made a SPAG mistake in her OP. Instead of giving her advice some absolute arsehole linked her to a thread like this where people were sniggering at SPAG mistakes. It was by far one of the most twattish things I've seen on MN and I've been here a long time.
