I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

OP - I believe @StaStarryDance might just have been employing a little sarcasm there. I, for one, have read many a thread on the same subject. Have to say I agree with your original post, though 😊.

Yes, I got the sarcasm as my reply agreed the thread isn't that original.

Have some sympathy for those of us who deal with Early Career Teachers. And autocorrect/spell check combined with trying to get the message or email typed and sent at lightning speed as 34 Year 9s are rampaging along the corridor.

Etc is the second choice on Android, so you have to notice it, change it, hit space and then backspace and correct it again before continuing, as it always defaults and 'corrects' to ect.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/08/2024 22:20

The one that really gets my goat is ‘on route’ opposed to en route.

IceCreamWoes · 23/08/2024 22:21

My android doesn't correct to ect! I'd have to type it in the first place for it be autocorrected I think. But I do have sympathy for autocorrected nonsense!

No need to loose your temper over it though

That appears alot.

American, out of interest? I haven't heard anyone else use it.

I still can't say "another think coming though" although I accept it's grammatically correct. I just say another thing coming really quickly so it's ambiguous 😂

That one's got nothing to do with grammatical correctness, it's just using the wrong word, which makes no sense in the context.

TheChippendenSpook · 23/08/2024 22:24

Alot and abit are creeping in more and more on here. My autocorrect changed abit to bit, so I don't know how many people get them wrong.

provemewrongthen · 23/08/2024 22:25

Rest bite.

What do people even think that is?

Biffbaff · 23/08/2024 22:26

I'd like to add that lead is the present tense and led is the past tense. Lead is only pronounced like led when it is a noun, not a verb.

Because you eat a Burger King at a Service Station.

Maybe. Or they are just stupid, who knows.

Oh, I think we do.

His, instead of he's.

I really can't understand how people can get that one wrong

HoppityBun · 23/08/2024 22:29

Misusing the word confirm. You can only confirm something that already exists, otherwise you’re not “confirming”, you’re informing. People saying “please confirm your details” when they are asking for details they don’t have. Then there’s “unbelievable” and “incredible” these two words are now not used to mean “not believable” and “not credible”. They’re currently used just to mean amazing or extraordinary.

DadJoke · 23/08/2024 22:29

It’s the oldest battle - the snobbish proscriptivists versus the mellow descriptivists. I roll my eyes when I see misused apostrophes, compound adjectives without hyphens and the occasional sumbarine instead of submarine. I would never call someone on it except in a professional capacity - but whining about it is fun. I recommend one of my favourite YouTube channels to take the edge off.

I like to read ect out as ectoplasm.

It shows me the writer doesn't know it means et cetera. I quite like &c.

UnNiddeRides · 23/08/2024 22:31

Where has e.g. gone? It’s now ‘think’. For example ‘I’m planning a buffet. Think smoked salmon blinis, smiley potato faces. How many for each person?’

the instruction to ‘think’ really annoys me.

IceCreamWoes · 23/08/2024 22:31

Drive safe. I will drive safely, thanks very much.

I didn't "sleep bad", I slept badly actually

They expect it to be ect because they recognise the construction from word endings e.g insect.
My one is CAHMS for CAMHS. Again, it looks more familiar as a construction. Annoys me though, particularly when they decide “CAHMS is an acronym for “Can’t actually help mate sorry.”

Musntapplecrumble · 23/08/2024 22:32

Did you think of this off your own back, OP?🤭

Ha, as someone who had a lovely day at the cricket yesterday this has made me laugh.

The problem is that it's rude to call it out, but if you don't they don't learn, which, to be fair, they should have done as kids. So we froth on in righteous wrath.
