I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

I see these things everyday.

(that one is probably now passed praying for)

Misusing the word confirm. You can only confirm something that already exists, otherwise you’re not “confirming”, you’re informing. People saying “please confirm your details” when they are asking for details they don’t have. Then there’s “unbelievable” and “incredible” these two words are now not used to mean “not believable” and “not credible”. They’re currently used just to mean amazing or extraordinary.

As this is pedants’ corner, I think you win - incredible in the sense of amazing was first noted in 1529.

What pacifically is your AIBU?

friendlycat · 23/08/2024 22:39

Myself and my husband.

Myself is just used constantly. It drives me nuts.

The other one I see on here regularly

Per say.

For Goodness sake if you don’t know how to spell it correctly, you certainly don’t know how to use it.

focacciamuffin · 23/08/2024 22:39

Wait list pisses me off. It’s a waiting list. A list of people who are waiting.

OK, women (I assume) after my own heart.

Although with the bought/brought thing, I explained this to my sibling not long ago and they were genuinely shocked that one is the past tense of buy and one bring. They said they'd never been told (they are dyslexic to be fair to them) and now they'd had it explained to them it made sense. They just used to guess 😂 so I don't know, maybe I should be more understanding about ect. Do people not know, or don't care, or what?

Don't get my started on "could of" shudder

I’ve seen people on here insisting that the bought/brought thing is regional. It’s NOT. It’s what happens when people never read a book or anything other than social media.

Dp's (left school at 16 with bugger all qualifications, from unspecified on here northen town) grammar has improved immensely since living with me for a decade. In return, I know an unreasonable number of names for types of bread/rolls/barms etc. Who knew bread was such a controversial issue.

Rest bite.

What do people even think that is?

Something you get at motorway services, probably.

murasaki · 23/08/2024 22:44

Also the me and I thing. It's quite simple, take the other person out of the equation, so 'Claire and me were going to the shop', you'd never say 'me was going to the shop', you'd say I, not hard.

They is useful though, in the right context. If you don't know someone's gender for example.
"I really like this artist. Does anyone know who they are?".

You referred to your own sibling as they which seemed a bit odd. Surely you know their sex.

I sympathise with your other gripes. I once gave a mini lecture to a class on etc. explaining the full latin origin and meaning so that they would never write ect again. Afterwards, my HoD, who had been marking in a corner, said to me "Thanks, I never knew that. I'll try and write it properly in future". She wasn't joking.

I'm an editor. But I can easily scroll past errors when I'm not being paid to spot them. Life's too short to get stressed over stuff you can't change.

Yebbut, we live in hope that some of the people who make these mistakes will read these threads and learn from them.

Actually, this is not Pedants' Corner, it's AIBU. But as it isn't Pedants' Corner I am probably BU to point that out.

They identify as non-binary so I refer to them as they out of respect for their decision (which I don't agree with to be honest with you, but that's another thread). It's mainly habit now. Growing up they were always a she. A tomboy, yes, but a she. They have children who are my nieces and nephews and they are non-contact with people who don't use their preferred pronouns so I do what I've got to do to see the kids.
But at least they use bought and brought correctly now 😂

To be fair, if someone seems in crisis, it seems to be overlooked, although it's sometimes hard to see what the problem is if it's badly expressed, if someone is moaning , it gets jumped on more, and I'm not against that. Per say. 😁

My husband genuinely thought that the word thought is ‘fort’. I only noticed it when he sent me ‘I’ve fort of something we can do this weekend’ at the start of our relationship. I didn’t say anything until it happened again : ‘any forts on that?’ 😭😭

That would ‘of’ been the end for me…

I don’t correct individual people’s mistakes. I think it’s fine to grumble about them on threads like this.

ToBeDetermined · 23/08/2024 23:01

Worst is when people mix up etc with eg
