To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

And punish the majority for the actions of the minority?

Balloonhearts · 19/08/2024 17:42

And men who have to work...?

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/08/2024 17:43

I think it’s more productive to work on changing social attitudes and expectations. If the only way you can prevent somebody from doing something is by physically restraining them, you don’t have much of a society.

arethereanyleftatall · 19/08/2024 17:44

Can you imagine how utterly lovely it would be. It would be bliss for most women.

Completely unenforceable though! All the baddies would rub their hands in glee at all the women out there with no protection!

Presumably no males could work anywhere that required them getting home over the curfew too? No police, fire brigade, bar workers, bouncers, waiters.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/08/2024 17:44

Ridiculous idea and impossible to enforce.

lazzapazza · 19/08/2024 17:45

Disgusting idea to tarnish all men with the same brush. Give Your head a wobble op.

FatmanandKnobbin · 19/08/2024 17:45

There are loads of other things that would be far more effective than this totally unworkable idea.

stayathomer · 19/08/2024 17:45

The only ones who won’t keep the curfew will be the ones to be afraid of

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/08/2024 17:46

It’s a great idea.

This is completely unrealistic.

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 17:46

Most violence against women happens in the home.

Also, men who commit violence against women in the streets are already breaking the law - why do you think a curfew will deter them more than the fact that assault/rape/violence is already illegal?

Maddy70 · 19/08/2024 17:47

Absolutely not

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 17:47

This is bait...

And utterly ridiculous

Was going to post much the same. The law is already no deterrent, so why would they respect a curfew?

PearlClutzsche · 19/08/2024 17:48

It’s a really stupid idea.

watchingsmurfs · 19/08/2024 17:49

As the mother of a son I find this highly offensive and entirely unreasonable to suggest that all men are violent criminals.

HaroldMeaker · 19/08/2024 17:49

Brilliant idea.

It isn't bait, actually. I'm serious. I'd like to walk at night without fear. For my DDs to go out without fear.

Something has to change. It would be a gesture and wake up call.

What do we do, nothing?

I would absolutely love it if it was ever workable. When I lived overseas there was a ladies only park I used to visit - and it was joyful.

All the people saying NAMALT are missing the point/part of the problem.

oldmanandtheangel · 19/08/2024 17:50

Well, I'd find my night work far harder if the men were absent..we'd be very shortstaffed

Mymanyellow · 19/08/2024 17:51

The men who are a risk to you and your daughters wouldn’t respect a curfew anyway.

And if your son was walking behind me on a darkened street, I'd still be afraid. Doesn't matter how lovely his mum thinks he is 🙄

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 17:52

Would there be special passes for those men who work at night? Or would women be expected to pick up the slack? Or would services just be understaffed?

What if they were taken ill or they had to run a friend or family member to the hospital?

Why would it deter those who already think they are above the law and break the law regarding violence?

What about the fact it would essentially TRAP abused women at home with abusive men angry about the discriminatory rule? Where they are more likely to be abused than a woman on the street?

Ignoring the fact that punishing all men in this way would only incite more men to feel aggrieved at women and become extremists.... and is basically segregation

So what do we do? Just live with it?

I've seen many women fighting at night, also female on female domestic abuse. I suspect it doesn't get talked about
