To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

Those who think this suggestion is punishing the innocent for the actions of the guilty - what do you think about the parallel suggestions from the other side that if women don't want to be attacked, we should restrict our movements? What about those long lists of rape prevention tips like "don't wear your hair in a ponytail because it's easy for an assailant to grab" that go around the Internet once in a while? Are those punishing the innocent (women) for the actions of the guilty? Or is it ok that women are effectively under curfew in many areas?

So how do we even up the imbalance so women have more protection and are safer?

At least I'm making a suggestion.

Anyone got any other bright ideas that could lead to real change right now?

Put more Bobbies on the beat. When was the last time anyone saw a police constable on foot patrol?

We could start by making sure men who actually commit crimes are held accountable for them, ie by looking at how we can ensure more men who commit rapes are actually convicted. A curfew wouldn't change that one jot.

It isn't his fault you're afraid though. It's not fair to punish an innocent person for your fear.

If nothing else, this is completely counter to how justice works in a decent society - punishing people who've done nothing wrong because they happen to share a social class with people who have. It also wouldn't actually have a significant impact on levels of violence because attacks from strangers, while obviously awful when they happen, are relatively rare. Most violence against women is perpetrated by men they know in private homes. It would actually be safer for women to make all the men go out for one night a week while they stay at home.

I never said it was? My point is that some women are of the impression that if they think their husband/son/brother is lovely then all women should. Even if we know nothing of the sort.

Also, how is walking away quickly from a man, "punishing" him? Because that's what I was talking about, not a curfew.

HelloMiss · 19/08/2024 18:04

I work nights....with men

How are they going to get to work during this curfew? Will I be left alone?

Perhaps this is something you should spend your time working instead of spouting this ridiculous tripe on mumsnet.

Disclaimer - my response to the OP in no way reflects my feeling towards women who have suffered abuse by men. Abusers deserve to be punished, the whole male population does not.

Wow the male violence apologists are out today 🙄

Gonna blow your mind, but it's possible to think both those things are wrong.

Violent Criminals are mostly men, as are sexual criminals, drug dealers, gang members, thieves, dangerous drivers etc etc etc.

Men seem to be in no hurray to solve the problems caused by thier sex - all you get is a load of wet “It’s not all men” apologists.

Men need to own the behaviour of thier sex, and acknowledge that they are part of the problem.

“but my son’s not like that” .. in front of you maybe, get him with his mates, drunk, or worse .. then see how it is.

I think a male curfew would be blissful

What about those of us who work with these men? In prisons, hospitals and supported housing among other examples.
Do our male colleagues get the night off that night?

We need to educate our sons right from tiny kids not lock them up just because they have a penis.

I've seen many women fighting at night, also female on female domestic abuse. I suspect it doesn't get talked about

You can't suggest women are a threat here... men only are wicked evil and abusive!

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 18:05

As the mother of a son I find this highly offensive

all rapists, attackers/ murderers/ creeps have mothers too you know

MillyMollyMandHey · 19/08/2024 18:05

As if the men who are likely to attack women are going to pay any attention to a curfew

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 19/08/2024 18:05

Wouldnt it be lovely if............ someone could suggest something like the OP has (which is admittedly entirely unenforceable) without people saying "Its Not all men though!"

That would be great until you meet the Wayne couzens of the police force.

When the Yorkshire Ripper was at large, there was a not-funny suggestion that there should be a curfew for women around Leeds. Didn't go down well then. As it was pointed out, why should the innocent pay the price ?

Women would never allow that.
(Yes, women)

They’d be crying how unfair that is, too cruel.
Not their Nigeling.

Perhaps we should just stop having kids. No more pesky mothers having boys who grow into men, no more problem.

I mean, if we're suggesting completely batshit ideas that wouldn't work and would grind society to a halt, why not go all the way

Dygger · 19/08/2024 18:09

Good idea, OP.

Wouldn't it be lovely? If all decent men, recognising endemic and systematic male violence against women and girls, decided to show their support by leaving the streets and public spaces to women for one night a week?
