To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

Silly. 🤪

It isn't bait, actually. I'm serious. I'd like to walk at night without fear. For my DDs to go out without fear.

Something has to change. It would be a gesture and wake up call.

What do we do, nothing?

What do you think it would achieve though? Apart from significantly inconveniencing half the population for one night a week (plus some of the other half who rely on them?)

I walk around at night without fear. Because I don't let scaremongering get to me.

Punishing all men is not the way to go. Plenty of other options.

Like: harsher sentences, more education, better police presence, better street lighting...

Disgusting idea to tarnish all men with the same brush. Give Your head a wobble op.

Agreed!

And you think all the rapists and attackers would stay home because it’s against the rules to go out and commit crimes on a Wednesday…..

they’d be more likely to as all the women would be undefended by brothers, friends, husbands, boyfriends, dads…. You know all the good men who don’t commit crimes and care about and respect women

HelloMiss · 19/08/2024 17:55

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/08/2024 17:46

It’s a great idea.

What's 'great' about it?

rainbowbee · 19/08/2024 17:55

I'd love it. Impossible it may be, but imagine walking freely. Just imagine.
Also- in the event that consequences for male violence against women were to inconvenience ALL men, they might be a lot quicker to police each other.

HelloMiss · 19/08/2024 17:55

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 17:47

This is bait...

And utterly ridiculous

I think so too..

Shinyandnew1 · 19/08/2024 17:56

What time would you like this curfew from every night, OP?

Would you like all the men to have to leave their female friends/girlfriends/wives in the pub/cinema/restaurant/club, so they can get home before curfew, then the women all have to travel home to the same address at night separately at the end of the film/meal/evening?

HelloMiss · 19/08/2024 17:56

watchingsmurfs · 19/08/2024 17:49

As the mother of a son I find this highly offensive and entirely unreasonable to suggest that all men are violent criminals.

Agreed but this is nutty old mumsnet....

Deipara · 19/08/2024 17:56

A preposterous idea.

BlackShuck3 · 19/08/2024 17:56

@twojumps It's an interesting thought experiment!

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 17:56

GoldViper · 19/08/2024 17:52

And if your son was walking behind me on a darkened street, I'd still be afraid. Doesn't matter how lovely his mum thinks he is 🙄

Men are allowed to walk the fucking streets!

twojumps · 19/08/2024 17:57

So how do we even up the imbalance so women have more protection and are safer?

At least I'm making a suggestion.

Anyone got any other bright ideas that could lead to real change right now?

it says a lot about the world when men take going out alone at night for granted, yet women need to have safeguards like male curfews 😪😪

Even if it was possible, there would be loads of men self identifying as women to get around the rules

It isn't his fault you're afraid though. It's not fair to punish an innocent person for your fear.

If nothing else, this is completely counter to how justice works in a decent society - punishing people who've done nothing wrong because they happen to share a social class with people who have. It also wouldn't actually have a significant impact on levels of violence because attacks from strangers, while obviously awful when they happen, are relatively rare. Most violence against women is perpetrated by men they know in private homes. It would actually be safer for women to make all the men go out for one night a week while they stay at home.

ExtraOnions · 19/08/2024 17:58

Violent Criminals are mostly men, as are sexual criminals, drug dealers, gang members, thieves, dangerous drivers etc etc etc.

Men seem to be in no hurray to solve the problems caused by thier sex - all you get is a load of wet “It’s not all men” apologists.

Men need to own the behaviour of thier sex, and acknowledge that they are part of the problem.

“but my son’s not like that” .. in front of you maybe, get him with his mates, drunk, or worse .. then see how it is.

I think a male curfew would be blissful

noworklifebalance · 19/08/2024 17:59

Ha! I knew there would a string of NAMALT and the predictable “what about my son”
(and I say this as a mother of a lovely son, sister of a lovely brother and wife of a lovely husband).
Of course it is about all men.

I wondered how long it would be before someone used this thread as an excuse to trans bash 🙄

No, not all men are part of the problem. My husband has stepped in when a woman was being attacked by her husband. Most men are not a danger to women and I'm sure most would help a woman in need.

Perhaps this is something you should spend your time working instead of spouting this ridiculous tripe on mumsnet.

Disclaimer - my response to the OP in no way reflects my feeling towards women who have suffered abuse by men. Abusers deserve to be punished, the whole male population does not.

BlackShuck3 · 19/08/2024 18:02

The subset of men that constitute 'bad men' are a huge problem for all societies.
It seems to me that once they get past a certain stage they are too far gone and cant be reformed.
I think the only solution is for men to step up and be good role models/fathers/parental figures for young men. There are men who step up and do that, but not enough.

SallyWD · 19/08/2024 18:02

I've been attacked three times in my life. All three times by women! Sorry but your idea is ridiculous.
