Sitting in the garden whilst dc in bed

Do you do it?

Dd has just turned 6 and is going through some anxieties so one of us will lie with her until she falls asleep in our bed, then either fall asleep/go on phone etc or come downstairs to watch tv.
We both sat in the back garden this evening and kept the patio open, front patio locked, she is upstairs in main bedroom

Would you do this? Is it ok?

Obviously it’s fine

Magnastorm · 17/08/2024 21:56

Of course it's fine.

quickturtle · 17/08/2024 21:56

I would need a diagram of your layout. You have two patios?

Peachyscream · 17/08/2024 21:56

Does your dd get her anxiety from you?

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 17/08/2024 21:57

As long as you could hear her if she shouted/was crying then I'd say fine, I would definitely feel comfortable to do that.

Sidebeforeself · 17/08/2024 21:58

What on earth do you think could happen?

Bournetilly · 17/08/2024 21:59

Of course it’s fine

Chocolateorange22 · 17/08/2024 22:00

Yeh it's fine, assuming DC would come down to you? DH and I wait until 5&3 are asleep and then do so. Means we can have a chat in the fading sunlight and catch some vit D after working from home.

LegoHouse274 · 17/08/2024 22:00

I feel that I am quite a 'protective' (or read: anxious...) parent compared to my friends and yet this wouldn't even cross my mind to be an issue.

Ellieostomy · 17/08/2024 22:01

Yes, this is absolutely fine. You can presumably hear any calling, don’t give it another thought!

Wherearethestarsthen · 17/08/2024 22:07

I think it’s just because of the way she is at the moment, but also a friend told me about a friend of hers who won’t do it and thinks it’s wrong as the kids may vomit/choke etc

Fgs
Of course it's fine

Sidebeforeself · 17/08/2024 22:09

But a kid could vomit when you are asleep?

Does your dd get her anxiety from you?

I wondered this too. Not in a bitchy way but I can think this has ever crossed my mind.

TheChosenTwo · 17/08/2024 22:10

can’t

AdoraBell · 17/08/2024 22:11

Yes, we did this.

Well that friend of a friend is a scaremongering idiot, OP, so ignore that!

How is sitting in the garden while you child sleeps any more likely to result in the child choking to death unobserved than sitting in the living room watching telly while your child sleeps?

Enjoy your garden while the weather lasts.

Exactly. Which is why DH and I take it in turns to sleep. Our youngest goes to university soon and I'm looking forward to being able to sleep all night!

betterangels · 17/08/2024 22:13

Seriously? YABU to think you can't be in your own garden because your kid is asleep upstairs.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 17/08/2024 22:13

If you're that anxious get the baby monitor out. I wouldn't for a six year old. We sat out on the patio this evening and ds came down to inform us he was getting some water, he is five. He was also naked, he said he got too hot. Unless you have huge grounds how is sitting on the patio any different to sitting in the living room, or having a bath/shower while she's in bed

She’s insane, then.

You can't be serious 🙄

So you and your DH stay up all night, watching your kid sleeping?

Pastafortea · 17/08/2024 22:18

It’s absolutely fine BUT once I got locked out of my house when I was sitting in the back garden and I had chips in the oven on number 8 and couldn’t get back in.

That would be too weird

DreamTheMoors · 17/08/2024 22:20

Whem I was 4 my mum put me down for naps and shut the door and went and did her chores.
And I climbed out the window and down the tree and ran around the back yard and played on the swing set and then climbed back up the tree and back into my room and back into bed.
And I finally told Mum all that when I was about 20. lol
