Sitting in the garden whilst dc in bed

Do you do it?

Dd has just turned 6 and is going through some anxieties so one of us will lie with her until she falls asleep in our bed, then either fall asleep/go on phone etc or come downstairs to watch tv.
We both sat in the back garden this evening and kept the patio open, front patio locked, she is upstairs in main bedroom

Would you do this? Is it ok?

You never know on here...

They may be allowed to front face in the car when they go to Uni but it is still to be decided.

It’s absolutely fine BUT once I got locked out of my house when I was sitting in the back garden and I had chips in the oven on number 8 and couldn’t get back in.

Timely reminder to keep a spare key buried somewhere!

Josette77 · 17/08/2024 22:23

I think you might need help for your anxiety too. I don't mean that rudely but you seem very anxious.

Ha!

notacooldad · 17/08/2024 22:24

Blimey, it never occurred to me to not sit out on a nice evening. I even used to have a glass of wine and read my book while I was out there.

AgathaSultana · 17/08/2024 22:24

My mum used to put my brother to bed and walka round the block or have a cuppa with the neighbour. It wouldn't occur to me not to be in the garden because dd was in bed and she's 2

Ratfinkstinkypink · 17/08/2024 22:26

I have just come in from the garden, I take the monitor out with me just in case (4 year old, pre-verbal, epilepsy, unable to come and get me if help is needed) but without the disabilities I wouldn't bother with a monitor. It's been a lovely evening, I sat watching the moon rise and listening to the owls.

PattyDuckface · 17/08/2024 22:26

If the children are in the East Wing and I'm in the walled garden, behind the orchard and over from the duck pond then perhaps not, but if I'm sitting on my patio with the doors open of my 3 bed semi then I think it'll be ok.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 17/08/2024 22:27

And why not?

MikeRafone · 17/08/2024 22:27

Depends how large the area is

you’ll get people that say not if it’s over 40ft away from your dc

and others that say it’s ok

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 17/08/2024 22:27

Reallybadidea · 17/08/2024 22:13

Exactly. Which is why DH and I take it in turns to sleep. Our youngest goes to university soon and I'm looking forward to being able to sleep all night!

You can't be intending to just let them go to university on their own? Or do you mean your husband has agreed to go with them?

Topseyt123 · 17/08/2024 22:27

Of course it's absolutely fine. Do you really need to ask?

We certainly did this. Also, we would have a glass or two of wine or beer outside on a warm evening too, which tends to cause ridiculous pearl clutching on here because you should apparently never drink in charge of children. You should be behaving as though at any moment you will be rushing them to hospital. 🙄

All bollocks.

Seriously? YABU to think you can't be in your own garden because your kid is asleep upstairs.

Totally agree… my DC is much younger not even school age and I have to go into the garden every night to clean up his toys… water the garden… put away the sandpit etc whilst he’s asleep upstairs in bed.

I don’t understand?! What’s the worst that can happen? They wake up and come downstairs and find you on the patio?

Cerealkiller4U · 17/08/2024 22:33

Wherearethestarsthen · 17/08/2024 22:07

I think it’s just because of the way she is at the moment, but also a friend told me about a friend of hers who won’t do it and thinks it’s wrong as the kids may vomit/choke etc

I mean. They won’t vomit really and choke at 6.

i read somewhere that you can’t choke after the age of 5 on vomit and it’s vomited out with force and the only time it happens after the child age is because of drink or drugs.

6pence · 17/08/2024 22:36

I’m so ashamed, I gave up supervising my kids when they were 16. I thought this was ok but now I know I should have waited till 18 and uni age. Do you think I’ve scarred them for life?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 17/08/2024 22:37

Of course its fine.

Edited

In the prospectus it says that the university has a "listening service"

OneBadKitty · 17/08/2024 22:39

Of course it's ok. She's six, presumably she could get up and come and find you if she needed you- she's not a baby. As for vomit andchoking- what age can kids be presumed to not be vomiting and choking as soon as parents are out of earshot? Healthy children do not not just vomit and choke in their sleep- never known this happen to anyone.

babyproblems · 17/08/2024 22:40

This is an odd question to me… why wouldn’t it be fine??? I don’t know if you’re suggesting you might not hear her (but she’s 6??!) or are worried about an intruder or something else I’ve not thought of…! What are you worried about???
I mow the lawn when my toddler naps sometimes. I absolutely thing it’s fine to be at home doing something when they’re asleep. (Providing they are safe..)

Wherearethestarsthen · 17/08/2024 22:41

@JabbaTheBeachHut ?? We don’t stay watching her?
