JKR being uncharacteristically quiet

1000 replies

Jdugsgsgwyd · 17/08/2024 14:42

Anyone else noticed since the news that JKR is being sued by Imane Khelif she's been very quiet, unless I'm mistaken she's hasn't tweeted at all in about a week.

and hasn't responded at all to the legal action being taken against her. This is very unlike her, I'm thinking she's been advised by her lawyers to keep quiet. Anyone else think she might have put her foot in it this time?

If IK was a dentist or something, I'd agree with you. But where a person's career involves competing in elite sport, especially one with physical contact, it really is the public's business. Don't want to divulge this info? Fine - get a different career
Why? Because some feminist warriors on an internet site have an issue with it? She and her family have invested all her life in this career. The world box champion in that category has said that she has no issue with her competing with women and doesn't worry about her safety.

She has broken no laws, no regulations and her behaviour has been exemplary.

She owes you nothing at all. If the Olympics decide that they should ban her from the next event, that's that, but accountable to you, absolutely not. If you have such strong feelings about it, challenge the Olympics regulators, not her.

@NoWordForFluffy nah - my twelve year old understands how sex is binary

What's Khalief got to do with trans people?

Precisely jack shit. I am derailing the thread by asking a question. Can I identify as a trans woman?

Do you honestly not understand that people can have ambiguous genitalia. Doesn't look like an obvious penis doesn't mean looks like an obvious vulva

right. It’s almost like some people have sexed parts that don’t easily fit into a binary classification (vagina or penis) 🤔

"Nobody has the right to judge her for her sex or expect her to divulge very personal information to strangers."

If IK was a dentist or something, I'd agree with you. But where a person's career involves competing in elite sport, especially one with physical contact, it really is the public's business. Don't want to divulge this info? Fine - get a different career.

DSD means that something has gone wrong in the development of the foetus - it doesn't mean that sex isn't binary. If a baby is born with one arm, it doesn't change the fact that humans have two arms as the norm!

If IK is female, then they should be willing to test and prove it. The argument that being Algerian would make this risky doesn't add up - if she's female then there's nothing to be worried about is there? And if not, then IK has no business boxing against females.

She is eligible to compete by the rules of the IOC. She didn't set those rules and she isn't cheating them. She meets their criteria and as such has every business being there. Your belief that the rules should be different doesn't make her illegible. If she fails an eligibility test for other organisations then she can't compete there. She still isn't cheating because she's following their rules. She does not need to publicly release her personal medical information to abide by the rules of her profession - the only reason you want her to make this information public is to satisfy your curiosity, which is not a need she needs to indulge.

FreedomDogs · 17/08/2024 18:39

So to conclude

  • Men don't have vaginas except when they do
  • Your sex is your sex recorded at birth except when it isn't
  • XY chromosomes mean you're a man except when it doesn't
  • An awful lot of people seem to think they have magic insight into what's in Khelif's pants, how she went through puberty and what her testosterone levels are when actually none of us know this
  • Biology is basic, sex is simple
  • JK Rowling is definitely the cleverist woman on earth

Did I miss anything?

👍🏻

Knock yourself out. Let us know how it goes.

viques · 17/08/2024 19:30

It’s an interesting thought that IK is the oldest of four children. The youngest three siblings are apparently girls. So while an inexperienced parent in a remote part of a country not known for its pre and post natal care might accept non conforming genitals , you would have assumed that by the time the fourth child came along there might be a few doubts being raised in a few minds. And as the children developed and their bodies changed even more questions might be asked. Or not.

I would also hazard a guess that the father of a family in a traditionally conservative society might be a little reluctant to acknowledge that their eldest child had turned out to be genetically male - though not a conventional male who was likely to marry, have children and preserve the family line - so they might decide to carry on with the story that this was indeed a female child, even though this child was developing interests and showing talent in a traditionally male sport not usually taken up by Muslim women. Who knows.

I am just musing btw, no evidence for any of this, just thinking.

I would love to but sadly, I don’t think any of you are going to answer it.
Of course it’s obvious why but it is what it is.

LovelyBitOfHam · 17/08/2024 19:30

I’m tired of the IK discussion. Nobody on either side knows the truth and until we do, it’s pointless to discuss.

My gut tells me there is something at play given the uncertainty in the first place. But I don’t know and frankly, I don’t think she looks as male as some of the DSD athletes do.

Your genitals do not define your sex. Your sex determines your genitals if there are no developmental problems

She does take breaks from twitter, often when she's working on a new book and during holidays so this doesn't seem like anything at all.
As for the comments about her tweeting about boxing and not the child rapist (and I've got no clue if she did or not) as some kind of gotcha, she has put her money where her mouth is in creating and funding Beira's Place. She's providing practical help and support for female victims of male violence out of her own pocket. That's worth more than any amount of tweeting.
I think its staggeringly unlikely that her not tweeting for a few days has anything to do with IK.
It does, however, however seem likely that OP is just stirring.

Having looked at JKR's twitter feed it appears that she IS on holiday...

Why do you think that neither she or anyone on her team has denied the story or simple said she has xx chromosomes? Or why IK has not sued the IBA, the US journalist, JK Rowling or her OWN COACH. IK comes from a poor family. roving you have XX chromosomes is very easy. If IK was female it would be a very easy libel win that would allow the family to live in luxury for the rest of their lives.

How so? You’re going to have to explain that.
Vaginas aren’t ‘colloquial’, particularly in this kind of discussion where words matter. Words have meanings. You don’t seem to have a grasp of the meaning of the word vagina.

Oh I wasn’t saying that to you, I was highlighting what you said to me. I just like to highlight when posters start to bully/ belittle others on a personal level , instead of engaging in the substantive debate.

you are right I could have been more precise in my use of language. No one knows what genitals this boxer has but her genitals caused her to be identified as female at birth. So either she has a typical vagina or it is possible she has a “blind vagina” which is much less deep than a typical vagina and blocked by either a horizontal or vertical wall of tissue.

It’s almost like the biology of human sex is complicated and varied , and the sexual parts of some human bodies aren’t easily placed in binary categories (eg vagina or penis)…. Who’d have thought?

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 17/08/2024 19:41

A micropenis is not a clitoris. Women are not faulty men, and the idea that we are is misogynistic as fuck.

Actually, they are. Every time we argue the actual
issue at hand, you guys bring it back to the trans debate when it suits and then back to the IK debate when it suits.
You don’t have to answer my question, of course. But it would be interesting to hear your opinion. Can I identify as a trans woman?

I haven't brought it back to the trans debate at all, I've entirely been talking about Khelif. I've made some references to the gender critical movement but purely because that seems to be where the "Khelif is male" argument is primarily coming from and I don't think the context is irrelevant - and I can also see the contradictions coming from a movement which usually holds men don't have vaginas. I can't control what others on the thread who might share my opinions talk about, but if they're bringing up trans issues I suspect it's also because they see a correlation between the same people making similar arguments.

You don't have to answer my question, of course. But it would be interesting to hear your opinion. Can I identify as a trans woman?

I already did answer your question. I'll repeat myself: Knock yourself out. Identify as a trans woman. Hope it works out for you 👍

Nobody has ever denied that a tiny percentage of people are born with chromosomal disorders that affect sexual development. Fgs it’s not like the Caster Semenya case didn’t make global headlines. What matters is that people whose disorder gives them male advantages should not be in women’s sport.

GrumpyPanda · 17/08/2024 19:47

W1nnweD1nner · 17/08/2024 15:52

So anybody that looks masculine has to show their chromosomes now?

Ideally, everybody who wants to compete in the female category should have a one-time cheek swab done, yes. At any rate that's the preferred solution of the vast majority (80% plus) of women athletes.

Tandora · 17/08/2024 19:48

spannasaurus · 17/08/2024 19:31

Your genitals do not define your sex. Your sex determines your genitals if there are no developmental problems

“Developmental problems”.

I’d respectfully suggest that the “problem” lies in your ideas/
ideals/ ideologies, rather than the natural development of some people’s bodies. People are who they are, there is no value to be placed on it.

As for sex- it is a mutifaceted process of development with various components. There is no singular factor or category that can be understood as definitively and universally “defining” someone’s sex. At the most rudimentary level we have chromosomes, but you yourself have acknowledged that you can be female and have male chromosomes. In practice sex is almost always assigned based on the appearance of the genitals.

But not - crucially - for the libel of saying that IK is male/a man. A slam dunk easy win if IK has xx chromosomes. Why do you think this is?
