FFS why don't you drive ??

So annoying to read threads on here that start with .. I don't drive .. my dp/DH does ..

Why why this is even a thing ? Does benefit of penis somehow render them more able to? Does their testosterone somehow benefit their abilities.. or is it simply something men regard as an essential in life ?

Before you all pile on .. yes there are certain disabilities that count you out . Severely visually impaired.. uncontrolled epilepsy.. but when one of my best mates who has spina bifida managed it with a hand controlled car via motability.. I think perhaps it's just not trying hard enough and happy for the man to do the driving .. even my autistic step son (severe - (special school until 21) got his license..

There is only one reason I can think not to bother - and that is because you are city dwellers with excellent public transportation .. but the rest of you .. why ? It just seems so 'weedy' .

If you’ve used a taxi then you’ve obviously had the need for a car

But not the need for a driving licence. I occasionally need to get a train, doesn't mean I need to be able to drive one.

funinthesun19 · 16/08/2024 08:49

And I wonder where all these magic parking spaces would come from?

Sharptonguedwoman · 16/08/2024 08:51

Beezknees · 16/08/2024 08:47

Again I guess it comes down to your lifestyle. Living in the arse end of nowhere without being able to drive would baffle me somewhat, but as a non driver I live somewhere with great public transport. I wouldn't holiday in the middle of nowhere either because that's not what I enjoy doing, I prefer a city break.

If I could no longer drive, I would move, I think. Getting about during the day is doable with planning. Going a mile up the road at night, in winter, to visit a mate is very difficult. I live in a village. Very poor public transport.

hockityponktas · 16/08/2024 08:55

I don’t want to and I don’t need to.
I’m not repressed by my husband who does drive. I don’t ask for lifts everywhere. I live in a place where everything is easily accessible on foot, bike or public transport.
Not sure why it bothers you so much🤣

Leah5678 · 16/08/2024 08:57

It costs way too much to learn. Maybe it didn't back in your day but it does now. I also know plenty of men my age who don't drive either so it's nothing to do with men Vs women

supersop60 · 16/08/2024 08:24

In this instance, no.
It's not the same as not liking coconut or not wanting to go base jumping

How is it not a preference?

Do you really want people who absolutely hate the idea of driving being forced onto the roads because you can't understand it being a preference?

I've been on a plane, I don't feel the need for wings.

Beezknees · 16/08/2024 08:33

Well yes, but the point is I've managed without a car of my own. That's what taxis are there for.

But why wouldn’t you just learn to drive? Why would you want to have to rely on taxis? What if there was an emergency?

CautionaryTaleGirl · 16/08/2024 09:05

Another way to frame the question is to ask why everything is tailored to car ownership.

Because I don't want to learn to drive.

What type of emergency would require me needing to drive? If there was a serious accident I'd call an ambulance. If it was not a serious accident I'd get a taxi or bus.

Taxis also work in emergencies. They don't vanish.

If you only need a car a few times a year, it is not worth the expense of learning to drive or owning a car.

Hardly rocket science is it?

So if you've used a taxi five times in your life, you should have instead paid for driving lessons, tests, a car, insurance, tax, servicing, maintenance and fuel?

I've been on a ferry five times in my life. Do I need to learn to sail?

So it’s 3am in the morning, your child is sick and it’s much quicker to drive to the hospital than wait hours for an ambulance (and you’re unable to get a taxi)?

That’s clearly not the same though is it - the poster was suggesting she had ‘no’ need for a car; but clearly does - a taxi is a car, you’re just paying for someone else to drive you

CautionaryTaleGirl · 16/08/2024 09:10

This is obviously a very emotive issue for some people, which I find really interesting.

I'd be able to get a taxi where I live. There are 24 hour services. This is why I chose to live where I do.

In my 16 years of being a parent it's never happened though!

whitebutton · 16/08/2024 09:11

I was involved in a fairly serious crash as a child, where a drunk driver crashed into us. I still think about it and feel lucky that we came out of it relatively unharmed. I was involved in more than one crash as a child, the others not so serious. I don’t tell people about this, so most people won’t know why I don’t want to learn to drive. I sometimes think about it when I get into a car even now.

Cars can be killing machines, and you can be the most fantastic driver but you cannot control how others drive. I’d feel too nervous to be properly in control, and the responsibility is huge. I don’t understand people looking down on others and judging for not driving when cars are so dangerous. Do you really want people who lack confidence in control on the roads?

There are a number of reasons why people don’t drive - people like you obviously take your health and good eyesight for granted.

Even if people say that they don’t drive because they don’t want to, there’s likely to be a reason behind it, whether it be health or cost or not needing to. I don’t go into reasons with people; why should I have to justify myself? I don’t expect to be judged.

Why is she unable to get a taxi? They are available all night. Uber exists. I've called a taxi at 3am to get from a friend's house to my own after a night out. They came within 15 minutes.

What would someone with epilepsy do in this scenario, if they've had their licence taken away?

And a ferry is a boat that I paid someone else to let me go on. I don't need to buy one.

I could just as easily ask what you would do in that situation if your car was being repaired or you had had a couple of glasses of wine so couldn't drive.

You are just making up situations to suit your views!

That’s only the case for cities I assume, you definitely wouldn’t be able to get one where I live (south wales).

I grew up in fairly rural North Yorkshire. That's where I was when the example I gave you happened.

I'm going to ask you again. What if your scenario happened and the person medically couldn't drive? Would you be attacking them in the same way? In your scenario they can't drive, ambulances still take hours and the taxi still isn't available. What are you expecting them to do?

If you think absolutely everyone should own and be able to drive a car, I also don't know what to say. Where are all these cars being kept? Especially in city centres?
