So annoying to read threads on here that start with .. I don't drive .. my dp/DH does ..

Why why this is even a thing ? Does benefit of penis somehow render them more able to? Does their testosterone somehow benefit their abilities.. or is it simply something men regard as an essential in life ?

Before you all pile on .. yes there are certain disabilities that count you out . Severely visually impaired.. uncontrolled epilepsy.. but when one of my best mates who has spina bifida managed it with a hand controlled car via motability.. I think perhaps it's just not trying hard enough and happy for the man to do the driving .. even my autistic step son (severe - (special school until 21) got his license..

There is only one reason I can think not to bother - and that is because you are city dwellers with excellent public transportation .. but the rest of you .. why ? It just seems so 'weedy' .

I don't like racists, no.
This is just another thing to add to her uselessness.

Every person I've personally met that can't drive has been severely lacking in other areas of life.

If my immigrant grandma could learn to drive and all her immigrant friends then no excuse unless medical.

I know a woman who can't drive and didn't pass her GCSE's - how is that possible? - you sit in silence in class, no matter how boring it is, you've got nothing else to focus on, how can you not pass your GCSE's in an environment that isn't disruptive?!

Wow you're not a very nice person are you..

Notjustabrunette · 15/08/2024 22:11

I can drive, but I hate it. If we’re both in the car, it will mist likely be my DH driving. I have adhd and find it really hard to concentrate, today I found the bright sunshine and car temp (was either too hot or too cold) so distracting I got lost driving to a place I’ve been to lots of time before.
But yes, it is an important skill and I do drive most days.

Yes. My husband uses his on the steering wheel so that his hand is free to use his phone/change the radio station.

And, for the avoidance of doubt, as a result I have had various people open up to me in confidence about why they don't drive.

Too often the story is similar. And again, not a trauma you want to relive by telling it over and over again.

And it's all very well pushing children through the lessons as fast as possible but don't let them forget its a killing machine at the end of the day. In addition to my own devastating loss, my cousin lost four of his friends in a car accident- one of them was given a car the day he passed his test .. the next day he took his friends out for the day and none of them came home. And these were sensible, studious boys, not boy racers.

That's fair enough. isn't it, it's totally understandable. You could easily say "I don't drive, I have severe anxiety around it for very good reasons but it's not something I want to talk about."

Not this pish again. From the people who think slower drivers or those who shy away from motorways shouldn't drive if they aren't confident enough.

Lots of people find driving extremely intimidating, do you want them on the roads? Hesitating at roundabouts, sitting in middle lanes? No you're first to have a go.

Driving doesn't make sense. Drive within the law and you get tailgated, beeped and people making angry gestures at you. Drive over the legal limit and risk a fine. My driving instructor couldn't give me reasonable answers on this so after passing I didn't bother.

I live in a city and it doesn't impact my life at all.

MillshakePickle · 15/08/2024 22:13

I am licensed but choose not to drive. H does drive and has a car. I'm rarely in it unless we are going away as a family or on the rare weekend we decide to use it, for whatever reason. We usually choose to walk or use public transport more often than make long unnecessary car journeys.

The car does get used for going on cross country holidays or to visit family who live very far away. We would normally choose to use the train if feasible, but we currently have a baby and need to go with everything, including the kitchen sink.

I don't like driving. End of.

I commute to work by train (south-east into London) and choose to walk with the kids everywhere or take public transport.

I don't rely on others or expect lifts ever. Even when they are freely offered because it's a favour, I can not reciprocate.

It's a lifestyle choice I've made for myself.

I'd prefer not to be in a car and to use more environmentally friendly options. Sometimes, though, it is unavoidable.

I'm sure this isn't acceptable to the op, but I dgaf. Isn't it better to leave others to choose if, when, and how they drive?

mitogoshi · 15/08/2024 22:14

I've got two male friends that can't drive but their female partners do, no health issues.

My dd doesn't drive but has severe anxiety as well as autism

Enigma52 · 15/08/2024 22:14

I'm menopausal with cancer. I drive as much as I can ( don't live in the city with excellent public transport).

However, some days, I just don't feel like it and my DP will drive ( tiredness, nausea etc ). Does that make me
" weedy"? Fucking hope not; I'm trying to stay alive here!

You sound quite cross OP?

FunkyClunky · 15/08/2024 22:14

I don’t drive because my brother was killed in a car crash. And it totally fucked me up. Turned out seeing him afterwards and seeing what a car can do to a human body really affects you. But I was fairly young and I thought I needed to view his body to accept that he really had just gone out one night and not come home.

Guess if I didn’t want to give you that level of detail and just said I didn’t drive I’d be pigeon holed as “weedy” along with all the other people who might have pretty valid reasons that you know nothing about @nextdoorconundrum . Anyway, you seem nice!

So the opinion doesnt count as you dont like the language?! Way to show you know you lost the argument 😂

Shall I make it nicer for you?

She is an idiot, and so are you as you are just as judgemental as she is, simply in a different way and I wouldnt want to live next door to either of you, so thank you for taking each other out of the way of the rest of us!

NowImNotDoingIt · 15/08/2024 22:16

@PyongyangKipperbang thank you for picking up the slack for my bad manners.Grin

lenaperkins · 15/08/2024 22:17

I don't.

My co-ordination is not good and I think I would be a danger on the road.

Happily, I live somewhere with excellent transport links.

TransformerZ · 15/08/2024 22:17

Namechangeno · 15/08/2024 22:04

Well you might think you are not racist 🫤But you are very judgmental!!

I'm definitely not a racist.

Thinking someone with no learning disabilities who can't pass 1 GCSE or learn to drive is useless is very different to being a racist!

What's wrong with being judgemental? People get paid for it!
Cooking, first aid, swimming, driving, DIY - people need to learn basics.

Calliopespa · 15/08/2024 22:19

CassandraWebb · 15/08/2024 22:02

Quite. Everyone seems to forget they are machines capable of killing at the end of the day.

They really do. The attitudes are mind-blowingly lacking in sense.

Cooking yes as everybody has to eat.

Driving? Nah. I don't "need" to learn. Why should I?

No diagnosed learning difficulties.

In fact, no diagnosed physical difficulties either.

Speaking as someone who was only finally diagnosed with a condition that explained all my life long physical struggles when I was 40, I think it is important to be careful not to judge people. They might be fighting battles you don't know about. They might even be fighting battles that they don't know about

I'm so so sorry. And yes, like you, I either had to accept people thought I was "weedy" or share information that was traumatic for me and no doubt would make them feel deeply uncomfortable.

Not allowed, apparently.
