Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

Humanpincushion · 15/08/2024 10:36

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

Fucking hell,I'd have torn a strip off a gobby 17 year old talking like that when I'm paying good money to be pampered!!

spikeandbuffy24 · 15/08/2024 10:44

I'm 40 with some fine forehead lines and no wrinkles around my eye
No Botox but I use tret and a lot of skincare and people have commented I'm ageing backwards!

PeatrixBotter · 15/08/2024 10:45

Botox and filler are two very different things.

If you're confident enough to just be you and not have anything done to slow down visible signs of ageing, then it shouldn't matter. Learn some witty comebacks!

Lentilweaver · 15/08/2024 10:46

Am 52. I use Tret. I think I look pretty good though not necessarily young. Never getting Botox or fillers. Ever. Don't care if everyone else looks like Molly Mae!

IKnowAristotle · 15/08/2024 10:46

Ignore the 17 year old as anyone over the age of 25 is ancient when you're a teenager.

Shibr · 15/08/2024 10:48

Some people just age differently, if you’re happy with how you look I wouldn’t worry about what everyone else does.

Lentilweaver · 15/08/2024 10:48

And don't let teenagers disrespect you.

Dressinggowntime · 15/08/2024 10:51

I don’t think Botox really makes you look younger. I’m 40 and have it but I think it just makes me look more awake and fresher not necessarily younger.

Myfavouriteflowers · 15/08/2024 10:51

My thoughts are:

Firstly, why are there so many threads on MN just lately about botox?

Secondly , why are so many young women - and 36 is young - so obsessed with searching for wrinkles and lines and seem to think their skin should look the same as when they were 16?

Thirdly, are you maximising the ways to help your skin look its best. Drinking lots of water, eating healthy, getting good sleep, exercising, good skin care regime?

Fourthly, why do you think pumping toxins into your body is a good idea?

Fifthly, why take any notice of what a 17 year old hairdressing apprentice says in chit chat? Does her opinion matter?

thedevilinablackdress · 15/08/2024 10:52

a) As a PP said, anyone over 25 is 'old' to a teenager
b) There is NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING 'OLD'

Apologies for shouting, but really we need to stop with the cult of youth and the fear of looking older

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/08/2024 10:52

Each to their own but my reply would be “ why would I want to have a toxin injected in my face”

TooFirty · 15/08/2024 11:01

I think Insta TikTok etc have given younger folk completely unrealistic ideas of what people actually look like IRL, and they're so critical and not shy to point it out either!

Its normal for your eyes to crinkle a bit when you smile, and its normal to be able to actually frown and get lines.
I think it looks weird having an ironed-out expressionless face and giant baboon-butt lips, but I dont go around saying it to peoples faces because its their body and their business

That girl was being a little knobhead, hope you didnt tip her

I'd much rather age naturally tbh.
No botox, fillers, hair dye and so on.
I do moisturise regularly as my skin feels bleurgh if I don't.
As for the teenager's comment, that's one of those things she can think but not say out loud! I'd be having words if I were her boss.

LoneHydrangea · 15/08/2024 11:07

I think when it’s so easy to get rid of lines - forehead and 11s in particular, it’s not surprising that loads of women have Botox. My niece first had it at 23 😮

I don’t think it necessarily makes you look younger, but it does freshen you up and make your skin look better. In my case, I like not looking permanently cross.

Edingril · 15/08/2024 11:11

Botox makes people look older and fake but why on earth would you let anyone make you feel anything about looks that is on you

23!!!!

I like looking cross personally.

OuterSpaceCadet · 15/08/2024 11:13

Two v different things. Botox, I wouldn't have because I value my expressive face in my work with children. One of my friends I can tell when she's had it done. She looks a bit startled but I presume she thinks she looks better. She was beautiful regardless and still is.

Filler no no no no just no.
Obviously someone will frame this as "hating on" women who get filler. I'm not, I really don't care what consenting adults do to their bodies but I won't pretend it looks good. It doesn't even make women look younger. It just makes women look like they have filler.

I feel really sorry for women living in areas where this look is so prevalent it seems normal. Imagine so many men did this? I couldn't find my partner attractive if he came home with that filler lip expression. I wouldn't want a man who found that attractive in me either.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 15/08/2024 11:14

I agree to a certain extent, no one in my friendship group have Botox and I am the only one you has had fillers (in 2017 I had my ‘11’ lines done and it was the best money I’ve ever spent, they still haven’t come back)

if done subtlety it can be youthful.

Chocolateismylovelife · 15/08/2024 11:16

What is tret and where can I get some 😂

Comedycook · 15/08/2024 11:17

Yes I totally agree with you. Looking good for your age if you're natural is pointless if everyone around you has had work done.

Cocoandcleo · 15/08/2024 11:22

The comments which are having a go at women for wanting to look younger/get Botox etc, yes of course in an ideal world everyone would age gracefully without a care in the world.

Unfortunately we live in a high pressure, misogynistic society and not everyone has the self esteem to simply ignore the ridiculously high standards we are expected to adhere to.

I don't think sweeping statements that simply shut down women's feelings on the subject or berate them for feeling any sort of way other than grateful to be alive is in any way kind or helpful to be honest.

JapaneseWife1 · 15/08/2024 11:25

I have never had botox or fillers in my life. Everywhere I go, people say I look 20 something while I am actually in my 40s. They don't even believe I have child who is almost 20. I use sun block throughout the year, drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep. I also don't stress myself out. I believe healthy daily routine can maintain youthful look. My parents are in their 70s but they look no way near their actual age.

Loool just had to google this! Never heard of it before.

Thepartnersdesk · 15/08/2024 11:31

I think the problem is these things only work for so long.

People can look great into their 40s and with the really expensive stuff into their 50s as people like Jennifer Aniston prove. But even with all that money there comes a tipping point.

I think I'd rather sacrifice a few 'years' now and look normal as I age. I was looking at my mum and aunt the other day and thinking how good they look at Kate 60s and early 70s totally make up free. I'm aiming for that!

Good moisturizer, sun protection etc but definitely not fillers.
