Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

Humanpincushion · 15/08/2024 10:36

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

No @Lentilweaver we don't run around wondering why people don't get Botox. We're just ok with the fact that we did, and are bored of the attitudes of some on here, who are very smug and sit in judgement, as if caring about your looks is some sort of moral failure.

I'm very much not saying that's you by the way, some others on the thread.

Doubledenim305 · 16/08/2024 19:58

Great post OP. When ur 17, 40 is ancient as other people have said. 50 I mean, Ur lucky to still be alive! I used to think that. And I'm 51 and feel like a teenager inside😁
At Ur age I really don't think Botox is necessary. At my age it is, but I'm not getting it. I am willing just to have wrinkles and am what I am.
Why no to Botox? Expensive, cud be toxic in the long term and I hate the way some peoples faces have been wrecked.
All these beautiful people on TV with funny eyes now and puffy cheeks and trout pouts. Even tom cruise has spoilt his face with goodness knows what.
Thats my tuppence worth.

IOnlyNeedTheSilence · 16/08/2024 20:05

Puffy cheeks and trout pouts = filler.

Not Botox.

For the 100th time.

a) As a PP said, anyone over 25 is 'old' to a teenager
b) There is NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING 'OLD'

Apologies for shouting, but really we need to stop with the cult of youth and the fear of looking older

Well said. I'm 77 and don't care if I look it. (Whatever a 77 year old is supposed to look like.) I'm usually taken for being younger - and I've never worn make-up, never coloured my hair (which isn't white but I wouldn''t care if it were) never had any fillers except in my teeth or anything else. People get older. Accept it. It's natural that we do, that we change as we get older. No point in pretending it doesn't happen.

But I didn't mention Baby Jane, or Jocelyn W at all. I cited women who are widely known for their beauty, whom previous pp said look great. So not hyperbole.

I know people find it unbelievable that any 50 something woman is not constantly weeping over her wrinkles, but I am fine the way I am. I also don't want my DD to start Botox or fillers in her twenties, like so many women are, and I don't see how I can advice her against that if I am doing it myself.

Presumably when she's in her 20s she'll do what she likes when it comes to her own appearance?

She will.If she can afford it. But I want to set an example. Even if that sounds holier than thou.. I think there is already enough pressure on young women these days o look perfect, because of social media and Insta, without adding to it.

anon666 · 16/08/2024 21:26

I wish I'd appreciated my beautiful dewy skin when I was 36!

Ageing is inevitable, so I've taken the low maintenance road. My skin is reasonably unwrinkly at 50, but it's still saggy and the texture shows the age.

It's a losing battle, which I'm resigned to. I feel like trying to hold back the tide will just put me into a permanent battle with age that I'll never win.

Am 52. I use Tret. I think I look pretty good though not necessarily young. Never getting Botox or fillers. Ever. Don't care if everyone else looks like Molly Mae!

What’s Tret?

Porcuine20 · 17/08/2024 07:55

I used to look young for my age, but two kids and a chronic health condition later and I look every bit my 44 years now if not more. I’d never get Botox though - I had it for medical reasons (migraine) and hated not being able to move the top half of my face. My kids found it pretty disconcerting. You can always tell when someone’s had work done and they don’t look younger, they just have that distinctive smooth-faced/swollen lip look. I saw an older woman on the train the other day who I thought looked fantastic - lots of wrinkles, in her 70s I’d guess, but stylishly dressed and with a wonderful air or confidence and calm. I’m planning on ageing gracefully and not giving a monkeys what anyone else thinks. I think I’d have gently teased the 17 year old for her rudeness - that’s all it was, definitely don’t give a minute’s thought to her opinion.

LaDamaDeElche · 17/08/2024 08:46

It's not just Botox, but also the fact that the vast majority of people on social media use filters too. People, especially young people, have got a really unrealistic view of what a normal face is. It's quite sad.

https://www.skinandme.com/?promocode=ADELEC5FMX here's a shameless Skin and Me promotion code should anyone fancy trying a tretinoin prescription with a discount. It seems to help me look fresher....but I'm not a fan of botox or fillers if I'm honest. Looking natural and well is my aim really 👍🏼

Thanks for this, I've just gone through it all, worth a shot eh! Xxxx

sommerjade · 17/08/2024 09:09

Look when I was late teens I thought anyone over 23 was ancient... my boss got pregnant at 35 and I remember being really shocked (I hope I didn't say anything tactless to her).
Now I'm 47 I can only laugh at how stupid I was.

I don't have Botox as I can't afford it, I've only just started getting some 11s through stress now my mum has died.

I never tell anyone especially younger ppl except close friends my age. No one else needs to know.

Because it's horrible when either a) they're not surprised or b) they say you don't look THAT old which makes you feel ancient.

Arrivapercy · 17/08/2024 11:45

Im 39 and fine with my lines. Ive smiled a lot and it shows in my face, I'm ok with it. I don't need to look 16, i already did that once.

illumi · 17/08/2024 11:49

I am 47 and don't have any fine lines or wrinkles yet. Been using prescription tretinoin for 28 years now (initially due to acne and just never stopped) and I've used SPF since childhood.

Start on good skincare young then you won't need to worry about getting Botox and filler at least in your 40's!

IOnlyNeedTheSilence · 17/08/2024 11:53

I have eczema and my skin cannot handle tret. Do I get my Botox pass now?

illumi · 17/08/2024 11:53

@Porcuine20 I was offered botox for my migraines as well and apparently some people respond negatively to it and have essentially a constant migraine until the botox wears off. Given my history of negative reactions to medications I couldn't face taking the chance of being in that minority of people waiting months for the botox to wear off while in constant pain. Also according to my neurologist most of the botox for migraine is done in the back of the neck, head and under the hair line! So I'd mostly have a lovely smooth scalp under my hair where nobody can see it!

You can do what you like as far as I'm concerned!

Cozylozy · 17/08/2024 11:55

People have Botox but it doesn’t make them look any younger they look like people with Botox. I think the tide is beginning to turn and I also think in years to come health issues will unfortunately to light with its use.

JLou08 · 17/08/2024 11:56

When I was 17 I had an awful perception of age. It was like I just seen people as part of generations ie young (me) middle age (parents age) elderly (my grandparents age). I really wouldn't take any notice if her comment.
Embrace your fine lines and wrinkles, I don't think many people are actually aging backwards, especially those who have fillers. The skin looks smooth but I think they do still look their age. I wouldn't have them myself as I worry there will be some accelerated aging for people using them in the future. It can't be good for the skin long term.

illumi · 17/08/2024 12:11

@Cozylozy There is some evidence that botox can migrate to the brain stem and their is also some research that people who use it are more vulnerable to upper respiratory tract infections. However it has been used quite a lot for many, many years and is widely regarded as safe at recommended doses.

It is more likely that fashions will change and people will use it more sparingly as the over "done" look falls out of fashion.

illumi · 17/08/2024 12:12

@JLou08 Yeah when I was in my early 20's I thought 30 was as good as dead, I'm much older than that now and still very much alive, oh for the arrogance of youth!

Agree with this, I'm not trying to look 35 instead of 44 by getting Botox. I'm trying to look a bit fresher and less tired, and that's what it does. It opens my eyes up, which no skin treatment would do.

I'm sorry but at 39 you should look unwrinkled.

Botox didn't even cross my mind until I was 56.

spikeandbuffy24 · 17/08/2024 15:04

@ZanyFox not necessarily
Depends on lifestyle, genetics, sun exposure..
I've had nose to mouth lines (the smile ones) most of my life. So has my mum, and my grandad, it's just the way my face is built!
