Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

My two cents...

Botox and fillers can look great if done well, but often it isn't. And you can certainly delay the ageing process by a few years, but not forever. Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman have strange, giant, puffy faces that don't move, all because they don't want to age past 30. No judgement if it makes you happy (I'd be lying if I said I'd never thought about it) but truly I don't think it's a lack of wrinkles that makes a person beautiful. I look at the women in my family and I can see laughter lines and happiness and life and expression; do I think any of them would be more beautiful with botox/fillers/surgery? Absolutely not!!

Obviously you want to take care of your skin and hair and teeth, stay healthy and keep in shape. And sure there's no harm in a magic face cream if it makes you look glowy and healthy and lovely. But I would still want to look like me, and I think that often gets lost. So many celebrities now look almost interchangeable because they get the same procedures. It's kinda sad.

I am hoping all this will be a bit of a beauty phase that will die out. I reckon big puffy lips and giant feathery eyelashes will be what people parody in the future when making fun of 2020's fashion!

I agree with you here
For the young I think it's far more about conforming to a set look rather than anti aging
Huge lips, razor sharp jaw , dipped in face with defined cheek bones.
Big lashes, hair extensions
Identical faces for Instagram
I couldn't tell any of these influencers apart, they all look very similar apart from Molly Mae
I remember the Kardashians in the early days when they looked normal😂

That's absolutely terrifying, I hadn't heard anything about that.

I’d be interested if anyone has a link for this research? Botox was first approved in 1989 for various medical uses (and still used by NHS) - cosmetic use was much later.

Kim Kardashian is a cautionary tale IMO.

Yes, sure, she looks younger than her actual age. But she has COMPLETELY changed her face. I think it was the nose job that really did it. Such a shame, she was really beautiful before. I've never understood why people think strong noses are unattractive - I think they're so beautiful. At least botox wears off!!

Oh really? What was it developed for? I know people use it to ease migraines and jaw clenching.

Picked a random article with a list but there are lots online:

The FDA have approved Botox for the following uses. Unless otherwise specified, the approval is for use in people 18 or older:

  • upper limb spasticity, in anyone older than 2 years
  • crossed eyes, or strabismus, in those older than 12 years
  • severe underarm sweating, or hyperhidrosis
  • preventing migraine in people whose migraine headaches last at least 4 hours on 15 or more days per month
  • reducing symptoms of an overactive bladder due to a neurological condition if anticholinergic medications do not help
  • eyelid spasms, or blepharospasm, due to dystonia
  • a neurological movement disorder called cervical dystonia that affects the head and causes neck pain
Some people also have Botox injections for off-label, or unapproved, uses, including as treatments for:
  • alopecia
  • sialorrheaTrusted Source, which involves producing too much saliva
  • psoriasis
  • dyshidrotic eczema, which affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
  • anismus, a dysfunction of the anal muscle
  • post-herpetic neuralgia
  • vulvodynia, pain and discomfort in the vagina without a clear cause
  • Raynaud’s disease, which affects circulation
  • achalasia, an issue with the throat that makes swallowing difficult

It's her age. I wouldn't take any notice.
At my age of 39, I notice a lot of variation. I am still mistaken for being a lot younger but I think people just have weird ideas on what certain ages should look.

tuttuttutt · 15/08/2024 16:54

Botox doesn't make you look younger. Just your age with a smooth, frozen face.

Renamed · 15/08/2024 16:55

People over about 33 just look ancient to 17 year olds.

It’s only when you get to 30ish yourself and encounter people in their 40s, that you assumed were younger, that you adjust.

17 year olds look like children to me now - just hatched, and their bodies don’t seem to have adult proportions… When I was 17 I would have been furious with me for thinking that

Livelovebehappy · 15/08/2024 16:56

I’ve had both fillers and Botox. And I feel I look younger on the back of it. But that’s just me, and how I choose to spend my money. I don’t go round scrutinising other peoples faces - some people age really well, others not so much. Some just embrace aging and don’t care about lines or wrinkles or sagging. They’re happy in their own skin. It is vain, and I think possibly a lot of people who have always been attractive find it harder to see the ageing process take hold, and are more inclined to try pause it or slow it down (I’m not in that group I might add!) If it worries you when people comment on your age, or that you look older (which is really rude btw), then absolutely have a little work done, because clearly it bothers you.

Not if it’s done properly. Those you see with frozen faces have had too much done. You can have it and just look subtly fresher/younger.

I agree with this actually - I think Botox can look fantastic when you can’t tell it’s there (if you think someone’s injectables look bad it’s because you shouldn’t be able to see them?!).
Personally I think the likes of Sandra Bullock (60), Julia Roberts (57), Kate Winslet (48) etc look amazing. No idea if they officially get Botox or not but based on the very few wrinkles they have I’d be willing to bet they do…

itsmabeline · 15/08/2024 17:14

17 year olds think everyone looks old and the alternative to getting old is to die young. I know which one I'd choose!

Packetofcrispsplease · 15/08/2024 17:22

Oh my god your hairdresser would probably send me off to the care home for old people then ..I’m 60 and have never had a thing done 😂
In all fairness though I’m a sun avoider and don’t drink alcohol so I don’t actually scare small children when I’m out and about 🙄

Sandra Bullock has very clearly had Botox. She is 60 and has smooth and shiny forehead.

Kate Winslet looks natural (and great) and has been very outspoken against cosmetic enhancements.

Julia Roberts I don’t know.

That’s exactly my point?

I know what you mean though - I'm 45 and get Botox and when I see women younger than me with really wrinkly foreheads I just think...wow, you actually look older than me.

Or maybe not older - less groomed, less refreshed maybe?

Botox is the business 😁

Of course, the vast majority of us sad, old looking hags don’t have £100s spare every few months to pay for it.

anyone who wants to see an awful warning go look at Madonna. i mean her face her choice but its not a choice i'd EVER make.

3peassuit · 15/08/2024 17:44

I’m a long term (over 30 years) user of tret and a high factor spf. I’m over 70 and my skin looks in great condition. Tret doesn’t stop you aging but it does take the edge off a bit.

This is such a toxic habit
Looking at other women to find flaws
It's a sign of low self esteem

turbonerd · 15/08/2024 17:50

IKnowAristotle · 15/08/2024 10:46

Ignore the 17 year old as anyone over the age of 25 is ancient when you're a teenager.

I second this.

My DSD (12 yrs) said I look 20. I do look younger than my age apparently, but I am 45 and most definitely do not look like I’m 20 except in very, very dim light 😂

Teens have no clue about what age people look, and neither do some of us adults.

Embrace your face!

Edited to take away a comment about Botox. I don’t want to judge people who do use it, I just don’t see the point as I like faces with a bit of wear and tear to them.

ObsidianTree · 15/08/2024 17:52

I have noticed on tiktok a lot of young women with filler etc. They all look weird with their unnaturally plump cheek bones and pumped up lips. I don't think they look good. This 17 year old probably thinks weird chiseled duck face is the ideal look to aspire to

I've just had my first lot of Botox at 57.

It's knocked 10 years off me. People keep telling me I look great. I don't have a frozen face. I love it! Getting a tiny bit of filler in my top lip in a few weeks.
