Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

Humanpincushion · 15/08/2024 10:36

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

Cut the 17 year old some slack. As far as they're concerned, anyone over the age of 20 is considered old!

OP, get botox if you really want to, and not because of what everyone else is doing.

My 2p's worth: Not everyone looks better with it, but I am only talking about a small sample size in real life.

4 out of the 7 women in our department have regular botox treatment, but I think the oldest of them, who is in her 50s looks the best.

One of the younger ones who is early 30s looks as though her skin has been stretched across her face and her eyes look smaller. It's not that I think she looks awful, just that I know she's done something to her face before it was confirmed that she gets botox.

Nowordsformethanks · 15/08/2024 17:59

Many people in their 30s are still fresh-faced and wrinkle free. Doesn't mean everyone can be that way.

However, Botox isn't the answer though as most people who use it may be wrinkle-free but not fresh-faced. They look like older people who have tight and puffy faces rather than young as they think they do.

Conniebygaslight · 15/08/2024 18:02

I think Botox & fillers have become so normalised that a lot of people think natural now doesn’t look right. IMO I think these procedures more often than not look bloody awful and give a stretched shiny face often with strange shaped lips. Nothing about this looks younger it just to some people has become a more ‘acceptable’ way of looking.

ZanyFox · 15/08/2024 18:05

You wouldn't know if someone had had good botox. They would just look healthier and fresher.

I mentioned at work the other day that I was off for my Botox appointment and everyone chorused 'what, you don't need it' and I was like...you think that because I get it.

Without it one of my eyelids goes wrinkly and saggy and I hate the feeling of it.

But yes it's more 'you look like you had a great sleep' than a 'you've had work done' thing.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 15/08/2024 18:11

Hmmm, i'm 35 in 2 months, and i don't think i look my age at all. I don't have any wrinkles or lines, i have noticed on SM my school peers getting both especially round the eyes, but i haven't yet.
Quite possibly, it's because i'm fat, but also, because ill health made me pretty much housebound at 16, so i've had a hell of a lot less environmental damage like sun, pollution etc in the last 19 years than the average person. I also do not wear makeup, other than the maybe once every few years i relent and update my SM profile pictures, and it's on half an hour at most.
I'm recently trying to take up skincare, but i'm so forgetful with it that i skip a day, then its a few days, and suddenly its been weeks since i did anything but wash with soap and water in the shower, and i don't even do that every time, infact, i probably only actually wash my face once or twice a week.
My dad easily looks 10 years younger than he actually is, and my sister doesn't look her age either, so i think it's partly good genetics too.

Botox is best used as a prevention rather than a cure, best to have it younger.
I started in my early 30s to prevent the deep lines.
I wouldn't bother now if you're happy and not worried about the opinions of others.

Those saying they would shout at the innocent comment of a 17 yr old, really???
She is a teenager who thinks everyone over 30 is ancient. Leave her alone.

Um, nobody is saying she's not entitled to THINK everyone over 25 is ancient.

But if she's old enough to have a job she's old enough to realise you dont insult your customers! Being 17 doesn't equal brain dead, most people know not to say everything in your head out loud by then, and if she didn't then someone pointing it out is doing her a favour so she does realise before her age stops being an excuse.

Tbf i think only 1 person referred to "tearing strips off her" and I agree shouting at her would be inappropriate but doesn't mean I wouldn't show i was unimpressed- just an "excuse me?" Or "wow, that was rude" would make the point. And I agree with the posters that said they wouldn't be getting a tip!

Moonshine5 · 15/08/2024 18:15

Botox doesn't make you look younger, it just means you have less lives. Also over an extended period of time makes the skin look waxy

Moonshine5 · 15/08/2024 18:15

*less lines!!

🤣🤣🤣she really had no social awareness at all ! She was asking me loads of personal questions about my life and when I asked for a magazine she was utterly bemused and said oh did you forget your phone 😂 god love her

😂😂😂

My two cents...

Botox and fillers can look great if done well, but often it isn't. And you can certainly delay the ageing process by a few years, but not forever. Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman have strange, giant, puffy faces that don't move, all because they don't want to age past 30. No judgement if it makes you happy (I'd be lying if I said I'd never thought about it) but truly I don't think it's a lack of wrinkles that makes a person beautiful. I look at the women in my family and I can see laughter lines and happiness and life and expression; do I think any of them would be more beautiful with botox/fillers/surgery? Absolutely not!!

Obviously you want to take care of your skin and hair and teeth, stay healthy and keep in shape. And sure there's no harm in a magic face cream if it makes you look glowy and healthy and lovely. But I would still want to look like me, and I think that often gets lost. So many celebrities now look almost interchangeable because they get the same procedures. It's kinda sad.

I am hoping all this will be a bit of a beauty phase that will die out. I reckon big puffy lips and giant feathery eyelashes will be what people parody in the future when making fun of 2020's fashion!

100% agree. I am looking forward to the day in future when we look back at pictures from 2020s and laugh at some of the crazy beauty trends.

Personally, I prefer to spend my money on taking care of my body with good food, regular exercise and treatments that make me feel good (rather than needles). I use tret for maintenance of acne (have done since my teens with a break for pregnancies); the anti-aging effect from it is a bonus!

HappyLittleNarwhal · 15/08/2024 17:36

I know what you mean though - I'm 45 and get Botox and when I see women younger than me with really wrinkly foreheads I just think...wow, you actually look older than me.

Or maybe not older - less groomed, less refreshed maybe?

Botox is the business 😁

Do you really look at other women like that? Maybe they don't have hundreds spare to look more "well groomed".

Grapewrath · 15/08/2024 18:32

some women age quicker depending on skin type, sun damage, lifestyle etc and others are more lucky
It’s not other people getting Btox making you look older loads of women don’t have it.
Im mid 40s snd look older without Botox but look more fresh with it. It’s very much down to personal choice

HappyLittleNarwhal · 15/08/2024 18:33

It runs through my head sometimes, I suppose when it's quite pronounced. I'm not arsed what anyone thinks of that quite honestly.

I've been on dozens of threads on here where people sneer at those who get Botox to know how the other half thinks of me so...

ObelixtheGaul · 15/08/2024 18:42

I have never been a looker, so the lines I noticed at 50 don't bother me much. Probably different if you are used to being complimented on your looks. I just moisturise a bit.
I couldn't do having anything injected in my face. Wouldn't fancy it at all.

Disturbia81 · 15/08/2024 18:44

Dressinggowntime · 15/08/2024 10:51

I don’t think Botox really makes you look younger. I’m 40 and have it but I think it just makes me look more awake and fresher not necessarily younger.

This

I just had it today and honestly you barely feel anything at all.

Fair enough if it's not for you but don't let that put you off, it's almost pain free.

Really? That's interesting. I don't know anyone who has had it, but imagined it would be a weird sensation and would be uncomfortable afterwards.

WayTooManyTabsOpen · 15/08/2024 18:57

How do so many people afford it? I’m baffled by that. It’s so expensive and yet so many people seem to get it. I’m on a decent salary but with a child and nursery fees, plus cost of living and mortgage interest rates, even getting a regular haircut or replacing my old running shoes is something I have to save for.

PeatrixBotter · 15/08/2024 19:32

I go to my friend who gives me a discount
Or students-again huge discount.

HappyLittleNarwhal · 15/08/2024 19:33

Not at all @ObelixtheGaul

Tiny tiny needle, takes two minutes, then a week later suddenly you just look like you've come home from a month in a spa in the Caribbean.

I save £10 a week into an account I can only access once a month and with three days notice. I wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.

I only get it twice a year so it's fine - £190 a time for my crows feet and my forehead.

heinzseight · 15/08/2024 20:32

Did it once and never again. I've decided I'd rather have eyebrows that move. I don't think I look my age (I've just always looked younger than I am, not because I'm pretty but because I have a baby face!) but I do look older than the mums I know my age who have Botox ( as my nine year old daughter happily pointed out.) But the good thing about getting into your forties is that you cease to give a shit about what other people think of you, and I don't care about my wrinkly forehead.

Lifeomars · 15/08/2024 20:45

poppymango · 15/08/2024 16:38

Kim Kardashian is a cautionary tale IMO.

Yes, sure, she looks younger than her actual age. But she has COMPLETELY changed her face. I think it was the nose job that really did it. Such a shame, she was really beautiful before. I've never understood why people think strong noses are unattractive - I think they're so beautiful. At least botox wears off!!

Kim K was so pretty, now she looks like a blanked out robot and there is no life or sparkle in her eyes. I recall some photos of her where she was in fancy dress as that girl in the Aladdin Disney cartoon and she looked so full of life and really lovely. All that animation and brightness has gone from her and this is not due to the passage of time but the way she has plasticised her looks

HappyLittleNarwhal · 15/08/2024 20:50

The Kardashians etc are always trotted out on these threads.

She doesn't look plastic because she has a light touch of Botox a few times a year: she looks that was because she's had a considerable amount of major surgical procedures and extensive amounts of filler which 99.9% of people would never choose or could never afford.
