To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

I do the same - heat pump tumble drier tho, energy £120 a month combined

iamtheblcksheep · 13/08/2024 19:30

Get a smart meter. It’s the only way to know where you’re draining the electricity

LiterallyOnFire · 13/08/2024 19:31

It's highish compared to the average, but not for a family with children.

If you're able to line dry washing, that's the easiest win.

MagicianMoth · 13/08/2024 19:32

We don’t have a tumble drier or dishwasher. Washing machine probably six times a week on average, like you.

Tricho · 13/08/2024 19:32

aren't dryers notoriously electric hungry?

I don't have one as maiden dry with dehum or line dry if its nice. Could that be worth a shot? appreciate theyre not the prettiest things or the most space/time efficient but...

Family of 5, all the kids are older teens. Dishwasher every day on an eco cycle, washing machine usually every other day (again, eco cycle, 30c), we don't have a tumble dryer.

Trickabrick · 13/08/2024 19:34

Dishwasher once a day, washing machine and tumble dryer probably 12 times every 7 days

NeverEnoughPants · 13/08/2024 19:35

How many people are in your household?

There's just me. I run the dishwasher once every 3 or 4 days. Washing machine maybe once every 4 days. I don't use a tumble drier.

Isis1981uk · 13/08/2024 19:36

Dishwasher on 'quick wash' every night for 30 minutes, and washing machine usually 4 days a week. We don't have a tumble dryer.

fghbvh · 13/08/2024 19:36

Dishwasher on every other day, washing machine daily. Tumble dryer maybe once a week in winter, not at all the rest of the year.

How much was your bill, how much was your previous bill?

I'm wondering if you've just come off a low fixed tariff or something.

Waxdrip · 13/08/2024 19:36

Dishwasher and washing machine once a day. We got rid of the dryer several years ago because it was so expensive to run. I think that the dryer might be your problem.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/08/2024 19:37

Dishwasher and washing machine pretty much the same as you (two adults, two older teens, lots and lots of gym kit and sportswear). Tumble drier is hardly ever used though- I’m drying outside at the moment, and in the winter I dry stuff on two airers next to a dehumidifier which uses much less electricity than the tumble drier. The only time I use the tumble drier is if someone needs an item of clothing in a hurry, or if I’ve got a big backlog of laundry and run out of space on the airers.

FrillyKnickersAndNoFurCoat · 13/08/2024 19:37

@Brepa
Put the dishwasher on eco setting so it used less electricity and water.
Line dry washing outside or get some airing racks and a dehumidifier which used a lot less electricity and is useful for getting rid of any damp especially in winter and after baths or showers.

MyCleverGrayBear · 13/08/2024 19:38

It's the tumble drier. We don't have one. Two children, I do 3 or 4 loads of washing a week and the dishwasher probably goes on 5 times a week. My monthly electricity bill is £40-£50.

Userengage · 13/08/2024 19:38

I think I’ve run my dryer once in the last two years - too expensive to use. Used to run it after most washes before the energy price hike.

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 13/08/2024 19:39

Dishwasher every night between 2 and 5am(really cheap electric in those hours) , washing machine maybe 5 times a week. We don't have a tumble drier.

SpaceRaiders · 13/08/2024 19:39

Surely it’s relative to how big your household is. Cut your tumble dryer usage by drying clothes outside or on a heated airer, it’ll cut your bills significantly.

LIZS · 13/08/2024 19:39

Dishwasher every other day, washing machine 4/5 loads a week, tumble drier only in winter about 1/2 times a month

PlantDoctor · 13/08/2024 19:39

How hot of a wash do you do? I don't have a tumble drier which I know are expensive to run. I wash most stuff at 30 unless it's smelly, every other day. Run dishwasher almost every night. Can't remember my energy bill but it's pretty reasonable.

Octavia64 · 13/08/2024 19:40

Tumble driers are notorious for being expensive to run.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/08/2024 19:41

We never use our tumbler to the extent when we have our kitchen refitted later in the year I'm not having one. Washing 7-10 loads a week, dishwasher once or twice a day. £200 a month direct debit, but this time of year we're using around £100 , the rest builds up to cover the winter. Ours are relatively high because our house is over 100 years old more open plan downstairs than it was designed to be and had nearly ten foot high ceilings, and solid brick internal walls (can't insulate them), so is a bugger to keep warm. Lovely and cool now though!
