To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

I've got air conditioning for my dogs and it's madness

We have air con upstairs and I dread to think what the bill is this month, however when it’s 34c outside and I just want a good nights sleep I tend to care not as much!

Mum2jenny · 13/08/2024 21:04

Also got air con which only runs if it’s very hot or very cold (reverse system which can heat or cool as required)

Gettingbysomehow · 13/08/2024 21:07

Laundry 6 days a week. I only ever did it once a week even when I had kids, a couple of loads at the weekend. I dont have a tumbledryer or dishwasher and my ectricity bill is £30 a month.
I dont need those things. I just wash up and hang my laundry outside or on an indoor rail in winter.
This gives me more money for savings or fun things.

Tagyoureit · 13/08/2024 21:07

Dishwasher usually twice a day but it's a slimmer one.
Washing machine probably 5 out 7 days but will sometimes do 2 loads a day depending.
Tumble dryer depends on what I've washed.

Amba1998 · 13/08/2024 21:09

Dishwasher daily.

washer and dryer probs on 6 x a week.

bananaboats · 13/08/2024 21:09

Washing machine twice a week, no dish washer or tumble dryer!

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 13/08/2024 21:14

If it is your first bill in the house did you check the meter readings when you moved in and provide them to your supplier? Have you checked the meter readings on the bill are accurate and not estimated? I know sounds common sense but these are the first things to check on a high bill.

soundsys · 13/08/2024 21:17

Dishwasher every day, usually overnight on the eco cycles washing machine most days, sometimes more than once if it's a good drying day. Because I never use the tumble dryer, it's like just burning money it's so dear!

HateMyselfToo · 13/08/2024 21:18

If it's a new house, check airing cupboard to make sure you don't have an immersion heater that has been left on. If you have a garage, shed or loft, make sure nothing on in there that shouldn't be.
Fridge or freezer will be working harder in this weather too.
Make sure vents and filters on tumble drier are clean as will help efficiency.
Anything with a heating or cooling element eats electric like leaving the iron or straighteners on for longer than necessary.
If you electricity is cheaper over night, do your battery charging then and unplug during the day.

bluecomputerscreen · 13/08/2024 21:19

what programmes do you run?

the eco ones take a long time but save considerably energy and water.

also, are you waiting until you have a full load? i.e. could you run the dishwasher every other night if you reuse cups/glasses throughout the day?

Bellaboot · 13/08/2024 21:20

I find the oven uses the most electricity.

SP2024 · 13/08/2024 21:20

Dishwasher probably every other day. Washing machine most days but only one load - maybe 5 loads a week. We have a 10kg one. Tumble drier never in the summer, maybe three times a week in the winter. Energy bill is about £160 a month for both gas and electric

BooseysMom · 13/08/2024 21:23

We don't even have a dish washer or tumble drier and we put the washing machine on twice or x3 p/w and our total bill is £120, which is double what we were paying before the energy hike. I think it must be the baths we have as we don't like showers..there's no other reason. We have a heat pump and it's not as great as people make out. It's always breaking and is expensive to service even though all they do is fiddle around with the programmer and check the filter.

Bignanna · 13/08/2024 20:29

That’s an enormous amount- you could cut down by using a heated rack and not using the tumble dryer, a huge electricity gobbler. Do you have to do washing every day?

I do 2 loads a day. I tend to hang adult clothes and tumble dry kids clothes. In the winter I dry adult clothes with the dehumidifier.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 13/08/2024 21:25

Dishwasher - never

Washing machine - 1 load every other day unless emergency (e.g. children are sick and need to wash lots of bedding) and once a month I do a wash every day for 4 or 5 days to get bedding, towels, kitchen towels etc washed and catch up on the normal clothes washing that gets a little behind during the month

Tumble dryer - once a month I do a tumble dry every day to dry bedding, towels, kitchen towels etc, the washing machine and tumble dryer are in the bathroom and I hang the non tumble dryable stuff in there so with the tumbler on it dries extra fast and I can pack it away the next day ready for the next load.

Family of 4 (2 young children).

Heronwatcher · 13/08/2024 20:11

Dishwasher most days
Washing machine ditto
Use the quickest cycles on both- dishwasher about 30 min, washing machine 1hour. No extra rinses or 3 hour cycles.
Use the tumble dryer once in a blue moon- and it’s properly vented outside (not a condensing one which takes hours).

@Heronwatcher

just to say, the shortest washes are more convenient sometimes, but not always the cheapest. Longer washes tend to use more 'soaking' time & less agitation. If you're wanting to save money you need to check YOUR machines usage, as they vary.

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 13/08/2024 21:26

4 adults & 1 child living here.

Dishwasher at least once a day, sometimes twice. About 10/12 loads of washing a week. Tumbledrier on about 1/2 tikes a week in the summer & about 5 times a week in the between October & April.

All electric cooking too.

Electric bill right now is £60 a month & will go up to £130 a month over the winter.

WorkCleanRepeat · 13/08/2024 21:31

Dishwasher everyday, 2 loads of washing most days, most of that ends up in the tumble dryer.

HippoStraw · 13/08/2024 21:45

I use a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. I’ve managed to get our energy bills down by using the air fryer instead of the oven, plus I downloaded all the manuals for my appliances to find which cycles actually use the least energy. It’s often not what you think.

Boymum2104 · 13/08/2024 21:51

Every day

Arrivapercy · 13/08/2024 21:54

Family of 4, 2 primary school DC.

We have a heat pump dryer but use it very little at this time of year, we'll occasionally use it to get towels fluffy. This month its not been on at all.

Washing machine - 3-4 times a week.

Dishwasher- 4-5 times a week.

You use the dryer a lot.

musicforthesoul · 13/08/2024 21:54

Dishwasher every day, washing machine 3-4 times a week. Haven't got a tumble dryer.

Dreamskies · 13/08/2024 21:54

it depends really. 2 adults in the house. I tend to fill the dishwasher until we’ve used everything up and then run it. So it can take 3-4 days easily before it needs running. Sometimes might only be once a week.

Washing machine probably averages once a week, sometimes more sometimes less. I don’t have a dryer.

So yea, that sounds excessive/expensive to me.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2024 21:55

Again, we barely use our tumble dryer once a week in the winter max.

bluecomputerscreen · 13/08/2024 21:59

have you given meter readings when moving in?

give readings monthly to get the most acurate bill.
