To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

I have to have a fresh top daily as I do get sweaty.

Jeans get worn several times before washing

Thanks for replying to me @SpiritAdder . Interesting how different we can all be from one another. Smile

My thinking is, if you are just putting on clothes after work / school, to sit inside in, then they would be worn again rather than washed when not dirty.
I had 3 dc at home, who were swimmers (lot of towels), and football and rugby players as well as campers, but could never get to that many washes.

No! It’s quite hot here and even after a few hours of wear they are dirty.

I agree - and I've yet to hear of anyone getting sick because of their germy woollen garments. Funny how people managed by not overwashing their woollen garments for centuries and suddenly "science" tells us it's bad.

And for another pp - I have NEVER had moths anywhere near any of my wool clothes (and I have a lot of them).

That’s not funny. They didn’t manage to not get sick centuries ago. The #1 killer was infectious diseases for all age groups mostly caused by poor public health and hygiene. They also had more parasites then….wool is great for body lice to live in…and body lice carried typhus.

RM2013 · 15/08/2024 21:59

There are 4 of us in our household. We don’t have a dishwasher at present but washing machine probably on most days. Tumble drier only used on wet days and winter - try and line dry as much as possible also have a dehumidifier which is brilliant for drying clothes and much cheaper than using the tumble drier
have a smart meter which does help keep costs in check

Sorry, trousers or skirts yes but shirts should be washed after wearing for 1 day. I don’t want to sit next to somebody who doesn’t put on a clean top every day.

I guarantee you often encounter people who haven't put on a clean top every day and you wouldn't even know it. I'm not in the UK but we have advice on the TV here about how clothes don't need to be washed as often as some people think they do. Washing a shirt after one wear, unless there is a very good reason, is just ridiculous.

I didn't literally mean centuries ago - I meant our parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc. Do you take everything so literally? I'm sure you actually know what I meant, you are just trying (and failing), to be clever. I live in a country where the economy was once built upon sheep, and I suspect we still wear more wool than you do in the UK - and no-one gets sick because they aren't constantly washing their woollen garments.

Yes when someone writes
“Funny how people managed by not overwashing their woollen garments for centuries..”

Funnily enough I do think they mean centuries not decades. Why would you write something you did not mean and then have a dig at me for “trying and failing to be clever”. What is so clever about reading the words you wrote and then responding on the basis of those exact words?

Surely, if you did not mean “for centuries” despite writing it, that is you not being very clever? Wouldnt a clever person have written what they meant?

Btw, the rate of death from infectious diseases due to poor hygiene, including typhus, was really high in my great grand parents time- they were born in the 1870s which is more than 150yrs ago. Great grand parents really wasn’t that long ago if I ignore the “etc” because who knows how many “greats” you really mean by that!

I don’t live in the U.K.

Babamamananarama · 15/08/2024 22:38

How many KWh are you using a week/month/year? And how much are you paying per KWh? Do you have the potential for an off peak electricity tariff so you can run loads at night/in the evening?

If you are on Octopus you can see your daily KWh usage in the app. Try not running washing/dryer for a day and see how much difference it's making.

Oh christ now it's making me think ours is excessive. Family of four here in a very busy household.

Dishwasher is on twice a day, 3 times per day at the weekend. Totalling 16 loads per week.

No less than 20 loads of washing per week.

Dryer 18 loads of laundry per week in winter.

Electric bill for the month around £240.

Kav95 · 14/12/2024 16:34

Tricho · 13/08/2024 19:32

aren't dryers notoriously electric hungry?

I don't have one as maiden dry with dehum or line dry if its nice. Could that be worth a shot? appreciate theyre not the prettiest things or the most space/time efficient but...

We have a new Miele Heat pump model powering through 20 loads of drying per week. Costs around £8.50 per week to dry those 20 loads. Which to me is well worth the cost.

Kav95 · 14/12/2024 16:35

MyCleverGrayBear · 13/08/2024 19:38

It's the tumble drier. We don't have one. Two children, I do 3 or 4 loads of washing a week and the dishwasher probably goes on 5 times a week. My monthly electricity bill is £40-£50.

I would LOVE an energy bill that low.
Our electric bill alone is £240 per month.

20 loads of washing and tumble drying per week and 16 loads of dishwashing.

Middlemarch123 · 14/12/2024 16:36

Don’t use dishwasher, no tumbler, got a heated airer which costs pennies. Washing machine on once a day, 40 min cycle.

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 14/12/2024 16:41

We're 3 adults, use the dishwasher every other day, same for washing machine and tumble dryer (( eco setting for wash and have a heat pump dryer. )) The tumble dryer I use year round yet our bills rarely go above £100 pm until the winter months when they work out at around £130 pm from using the heating......and no I don't feel bad about using the dryer in the summer. I work hard, I don't own a car or go abroad on holidays and I have all new appliances. I'll hand the blame on the hole in the ozone layer onto someone else !

How do you have 20 loads of laundry for 4 people? Or did I miss read the number of family members? I have two dc who wear games kit AND school uniform 5 days a week. always clean uniform every morning, more often than not clean games kit. One plays a muddy sport twice a week out of school too plus two other sports. Only one adult at the moment though.

normal size washing machine. I can get several days worth of uniform/kit etc in each load.

Hard not to sound arsy but genuinely curious about how you have 20 loads a week!

I don't think not washing your woollen garments for the year caused typhus. Maybe you should check that out.

Blimey you're right. I learn something new everyday 😀

EveryDayisFriday · 14/12/2024 17:44

I run them all around 4x a week each, every other day or so. The dishwasher and washer goes on dirt cheap night rates but have to run the tumble dryer during the day annoyingly. We line dry during the summer. Car charging is what puts our bills up but still cheaper than petrol costs.

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 14/12/2024 17:45

Dishwasher: probably 3 times a week.
Washing machine and tumble dryer: twice a week each.

But there are only 3 of us. I can imagine a larger family needing to use their appliances much more frequently.

PickAChew · 14/12/2024 17:47

I understand all too well how you end up doing 20 loads a week without washing stuff that isn't even dirty. It's definitely not because I enjoy it and I'm sure the PP has their reasons, too.

Not washing clothes & blankets definitely ups the risk of typhus. It’s spread by clothes lice that prefer woollens.

HappilyContentTheseDays · 14/12/2024 17:49

The high energy bill will be the tumble dryer.
I live on my own so don't have a dish washer because it isn't worth it, but I'm a clean freak (!) and have the washing machine and tumble dryer on every day. The tumble dryer uses the most energy...that and the frequent kettle boiling for coffees etc.
I prefer to pay the bill because I just love tumbled dried clothes and towels, they are all soft and fluffy rather than harsh when dried otherwise. And I don't have damp problems from stuff hanging around drying, which I also can't bear.

EmmerdaleFan78 · 14/12/2024 17:50

Dishwasher probably twice a day. Washing machine averages out at about 5 washes a week and at least 20 hours of drying a week 😞 😞 It’s a washer/dryer so really crap. We’ve got solar panels which help a bit and during the summer we rarely use the drier so look at the bills as a yearly cost to soften the blow 😂

Last month our electricity bill was around £110 for the house and about £34 for charging the car.

I’m really not trying to be argumentative. Please help me understand 20 loads for 4 people unless one or more have medical conditions that involve frequent changes etc.

The only way I understand it is if some loads aren’t full or there are a lot of bedsheet/towel changes
