To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

Family of 3. Dishwasher every 1-2 days. Washing machine 2-3 times a week in summer 3-4 in winter (more filthy sports kit). Tumble dryer never used in summer, maybe 2-3 times a week in winter. Washing machine and tumble dryer are both huge and we only ever run full loads.

Combined energy bill is £190 per month but we have an electric car and an ancient house with single skin walls which accounts for it.

2sisters · 13/08/2024 20:17

How much is huge? If is huge now if ne worried about winter.

I use the dishwasher daily. The washing machine and tumble dryer at least once a day. Our combined summer weather bill (obviously no heating on) is around £140 a month. In the winter it's about £300 ISH a month. I think the highest it's been was £460.

RedRobyn2021 · 13/08/2024 20:17

Why use the dryer when it's so hot atm?

Isis1981uk · 13/08/2024 19:36

Dishwasher on 'quick wash' every night for 30 minutes, and washing machine usually 4 days a week. We don't have a tumble dryer.

Exact same for me.

mamaduckbone · 13/08/2024 20:21

Dishwasher daily, washing machine 5 or 6 times a week but no tumble drier - they are notorious for using a ton of electricity

soberfabulous · 13/08/2024 20:24

We don't have a dishwasher or tumble dryer. Washing machine on 4-5 times a week max.

Maray1967 · 13/08/2024 20:27

Dishwasher on every night. I do about 5-6 loads of laundry each week. Dryer - I use sparingly. Usually once a week - towels only. Everything else I line dry or put on the maiden. I have a tall radiator in the kitchen and I stand the maiden in front of it a few inches away. If I dry bedding on it I put the pillow cases on the inner rails, sheet on the next to outer ones hanging over each side and the duvet cover folded once placed over the whole thing. That dries by the next morning. If I’m drying clothes it will take longer but usually it’s fine in 24 hours. I have a sock hanger which I use on both the outside line and also on the maiden - saves space.

The dryer is the problem - use it far less.

Mespher · 13/08/2024 20:29

Dishwasher and washing machine isn't excessive but tumble dryer is in the summer, I tend to try to wash when I can hang it out and do my 60c sheet wash on Sunday which is BG half price electric day

That’s an enormous amount- you could cut down by using a heated rack and not using the tumble dryer, a huge electricity gobbler. Do you have to do washing every day?

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/08/2024 20:31

Yabu. And obviously it depends on the size of your household.

shellyleppard · 13/08/2024 20:32

Family of 3 , no dishwasher or tumble dryer. Washing machine two or three times a wet, it goes outside or on airer/airing cupboard in winter. £120 for gas and electric

Lancrelady80 · 13/08/2024 20:33

It's the tumble dryer. Dishwasher at least once a day and washing machine probably 4 or 5 times a week. We've used the dryer probably less than dozen times in ten years - it's fab when needed but expensive, so only used when absolutely essential.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/08/2024 20:33

The drier is about 80p to £1 an hour, and washer a bit less, but also uses water.
I do laundry about once a week, but times that by 3 for others in the house. Never really use dryer except if in a big hurry.
If you've a smart meter it might be faulty or picking up readings from yours plus another property? I have heard of that happening.

MyStylish40s · 13/08/2024 20:35

Washing machine every day, sometimes twice a day

Dishwasher maybe 3 times a week

Dryer once a week in summer, every day in winter

BuccoA · 13/08/2024 20:36

We use octopus energy that tells us the cheapest times. I only use appliances on those hours.

Washing machine 6 to 7 times a week, line dry in summer. In winter, we use the dehumidifiers to dry as it’s on 24/7 in winter anyway but we still put the clothes in the dryer for 15 mins so it’s crisp. No dishwasher and no gas, only electricity. Pay £210 direct debit all year

Wexone · 13/08/2024 20:37

Bignanna · 13/08/2024 19:45

Don’t need it! Doesn’t everyone know a tumble drier gobbles electricity?

not newer heat pumps ones. they are more economical and cost very little per hour to run.

thecatsthecats · 13/08/2024 20:43

Two adults, one baby.

Dishwasher 3x a week.
Washing machine and tumble dryer about six to eight times per month. (A few dual loads which make two loads in the washing machine into one dryer load).

Usually a lot less in the dryer in summer, of course, but even if it weren't so wet the baby pulls it all down from the racks.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 13/08/2024 20:48

Your use is probably similar to mine.

Dishwasher daily / most days, very occasionally I’ll skip a day if I haven’t cooked something that uses a lot of pots / pans / trays etc.

Washing machine probably equates to almost daily, I probably do a small load every couple of days but my teenage son has a habit of hoarding stuff until we have no towels and he has nothing clean left to wear then dumping up to 6 loads worth on me at once so is used a lot in one day even though I may not have used it for 2 or 3 days prior.

Drier used every time a wash load is done so again probably close to daily in a roundabout way.

My electric bill with him at home all day every day mostly on his computer (school hols) is currently around £80-90 a month.

Obviously cost will vary depending on supplier and energy rating of your appliances.

Also I try to use quick was functions on the washing machine as much as possible, a quick 60 degree wash is under an hour.

Mum2jenny · 13/08/2024 20:50

£150 to £250 per month depending on time of year. Run dishwasher every other day, washing machine 4/5 times a week. Tumble dyer pretty random but there’s no way I’m pegging socks n underwear on the line. That always gets tumbled

hulahops88 · 13/08/2024 20:51

I've got air conditioning for my dogs and it's madness

Dotto · 13/08/2024 20:53

Three people. We run dishwasher usually once a day, washing machine 3 times a week, tumble dryer same, possibly less in summer but we're quite lazy with hanging washing up outside. Average electric is £40 a month on Octopus tracker tariff. I don't find tumble dryer consumption to be as scary as some would have you believe.

Talkinpeace · 13/08/2024 20:55

Never owned a tumble drier. Never will.

Dishwasher is run when its full - every other day
Washing machine is run when I have a full load - about every three days

Hot water comes from solar thermal panel so nearly free all summer.
Only boil the right amount of water.
Everything not needed is switched off at night.

ApplesOrangesBananas · 13/08/2024 21:00

Dishwasher 3 x a day. Everyone is home and cooks a lot, plus we still use bottles.
Washing machine probably 4 or 5 x a week and drier probably only once or twice for bedding and towels.
