To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

Why are you putting the tumble dryer on 4 to 5 a week in the summer?

don’t you hang the washing out to dry, we haven’t used ours for months

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/08/2024 19:54

We use ours about the same as you roughly. 2 adults and 2 kids.

have your bills suddenly gone up? Have you come to the end of a fixed term without realising and the unit cost has shot up?

maddening · 13/08/2024 19:54

bergamotorange · 13/08/2024 19:36

How much was your bill, how much was your previous bill?

I'm wondering if you've just come off a low fixed tariff or something.

Agree with this - particularly being a summer bill

AliTheMinx · 13/08/2024 19:55

We use the dishwasher 3/4 times a week and the washing machine 2/3 a week. We don't have a drier. We are a family of 3 - me, DH and DS (12.

Not everyone has an 'out' to hang their washing.

Family of 5, all the kids are older teens. Dishwasher every day on an eco cycle, washing machine usually every other day (again, eco cycle, 30c), we don't have a tumble dryer.

Check the eco cycle as my eco cycle uses waaaay more electric than the quick cycle

We dishwash every maybe 3-4d and 1x washing a week. Line dry clothes. But there's only 2 of us

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 13/08/2024 19:56

Is this a new house?

the cost of your electricity is driven largely by anything with a heating element. So if you're doing your washing on a hot cycle, that's more expensive than doing it on a cold or warm cycle. Ditto dishwasher. Tumble drier is notoriously one of the most expensive appliances in a household. But the oven is another. electric stove if you have one. Any heating. If it's a new house, check your boiler/hot water - if it's set too hot your hot water is being constantly heated to a higher temperature, which will ramp up the bill massively. Ditto any underfloor heating.

Get a clothes rack and a dehumidifier. You can chuck it outside if nice and dry inside if raining, without the issue of extra humidity in the house. Dries MUCH faster than without dehumidifier too (although of course not as fast a tumble drier!)

Thanks, I'll look into this. I have an airer but it needs replacing. I rarely used the dryer to properly dry stuff, as in a full load, more likely to finish something off or if a pair of school trousers needed drying quickly . Not having it has resulted in me being more organised

RunningThroughMyHead · 13/08/2024 19:58

Family of 5 (3 young kids). We put the dishwasher on 4 times a week, washing machine 4 times, tumble dryer never in the summer, 2-3 times a week during winter.

Why do you need the dishwasher every night? Is it full when run?

PrincessofWells · 13/08/2024 19:59

Stop washing clothing that has only been worn once, and put washing on the line.

Please can't people think of the damage to the environment 😟

FunLurker · 13/08/2024 20:00

Dishwasher 8 times a week
Washing machine 9 times a week
Tumble 3 times a week (increasing in winter)
Family of 5 adults extra people at weekends, and I cook extra food for parents ar weekend.
My electric shower eats electric

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 13/08/2024 20:01

Washing is all done on a Saturday, and it's probably 6 loads.

Dishwasher nigh on every day.

Tumble dryer not at all at the moment. Middle of winter will go on 6 times on a Saturday as each load finishes in the washing machine.

Itstime1 · 13/08/2024 20:01

Dishwasher every 1/2 days. Washing machine at least once a day, up to 3. Same with tumble dryer - depends on how much washing we get out the way.

3 of us. Allergies means everything is worn once only.

DH wfh as well. Ours is around £190 a month (4 bed detached) with octopus but we had solars put in at Christmas and they haven’t factored that in yet. We usually make money every month on them so it’s around £20-40 a month now!

Childfreefriedbread · 13/08/2024 20:02

I use mine a similar amount. I've found investing a little more in the appliances and buying the best rated energy efficiency wise makes a huge difference to energy bills but often only costs £100 more to buy.

MonsteraMama · 13/08/2024 20:02

Dishwasher every other day, washing machine 2-3 times a week, no dryer. Family of 2 adults and one 16yo daughter.

TwistedSisters · 13/08/2024 20:03

It will be the tumble dryer.
Modern dishwashers are extremely cheap to run - cheaper than washing up by hand.
If you do several hot washes in your washing machine, they are expensive too.

PolaroidPrincess · 13/08/2024 20:05

Dishwasher at least once a day but almost always the eco setting, usually overnight.

Washing machine about the same as you. Depending on what I'm washing I'd do a few exp washes and a few at 60 degrees.

Tumble dryer, never but that's mainly because I don't have one Wink

Gorgonemilezola · 13/08/2024 20:06

There's only 2 of us so dishwasher every day, washing machine maybe 5x per fortnight. We have a tumble dryer but very rarely use it. Power bills avg about £120 per month across the year.

olivecapes · 13/08/2024 20:07

Dishwasher once a day, washing machine about 4 times a week? And dryer probably about 3? Our bills are £150-180 a month.

JLou08 · 13/08/2024 20:08

I don't use a dishwasher. Washing machine I'd say 7-8 times a week. Dryer really varies dependent on the weather, maybe once a week on average.

PistachioFrapp · 13/08/2024 20:10

@Bignanna

we are 5 adults in a fairly large house so tbh not sure we can save that much.

Wolfpa · 13/08/2024 20:10

A full dishwasher uses less energy then handwashing dishes do it is not that. Your usage seems average for a family. Can you get some clothes horses to dry on instead of your tumble dryer. Also take a look at your tariff are you on one where you pay the same price no matter what throughout the day or one that is cheaper to use at night?

Heronwatcher · 13/08/2024 20:11

Dishwasher most days
Washing machine ditto
Use the quickest cycles on both- dishwasher about 30 min, washing machine 1hour. No extra rinses or 3 hour cycles.
Use the tumble dryer once in a blue moon- and it’s properly vented outside (not a condensing one which takes hours).

Trumptonagain · 13/08/2024 20:12

Really does depend on how many are in your family.

When my 2 DC lived at home the dishwasher would go on every 3 days, never put pans or glass bowls in literally just cutlery, plates, bowls, mugs and drinking glasses.
Washing machine was more how many loads...decent weather 1/2 every few days.

Now empty nester and it's every 7 days for dishwasher and 3/4 loads of washing a week.

We purchased a few solar panels last year so on a decent day weather wise it costs nothing for electricity.

Shampoo66 · 13/08/2024 20:14

this time of year our bill is low… we have solar/an eco house so I run the washing machine in the daytime to save ££. I only use the dryer in winter, everything gets line dried or maiden’d in summer, my smart meter shows me that my dryer can cost approx 50-70p an hour so I tend to wash, pop it on a maiden and just finish it off for 15-20 mins the day after in the dryer in winter. The dishwasher is expensive to run so i only use it occasionally and I never wash pans/knives in it regardless so I’ll usually just wash as I go.
we found showers in winter cost approx 25p for about 4/5 mins so the only time I spend 20mins in a shower is when I’m in a hotel:) it all mounts up unfortunately. I suggest you get a smart meter, it’s an eye opener.
