To ask how often you run these appliances after I’ve had a HUGE energy bill?

How often do you run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer?

dishwasher here goes on every night without fail. The washing machine 6 out of 7 days. The tumble dryer 4 or 5 times a week. I didn’t think this was excessive? Is it?

Dishwasher once a day through the night on the eco cycle
Washing machine 4 times a week.
Tumble dryer probably 4 times a week in the Winter. If it’s drying weather the washing goes on the line.

Makingchocolatecake · 13/08/2024 22:08

Do you still use your tumble drier in summer? They are very expensive to run, we don't have one for that reason.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/08/2024 22:25

Washer is never bloody off - between toddler clothes, leaking nappies meaning wet bed sheets, a football mad teen, a gym loving husband, towels and all the other bedding aside from the toddlers wet stuff..... can be on 3 times a day some days but always at least once.

Dishwasher on daily, occasionally twice especially through holidays when we're all at home for all the days' meals or I've done a roast or something similar.

No tumble.

2 adults and 2 children.

125 a month - G&E combined and in credit.

AgentJohnson · 13/08/2024 22:37

The washing machine never goes above 40 c and is run 5 times a week. 95 c wash once a month to clean the machine. Ditche using fabric softener because the guy who services my machine says I’m paying a premium for a product that is negatively impacting my clothes and the washing machines efficacy.

Tumble dryer is run twice a week for towels, use three dryer balls with a few drops of favourite essential oil. The dryer balls cuts the drying time by at least a third.

Dishwasher goes on every day in the winter less so in the summer as we eat out more often and are frequently away. The dishwasher is loaded throughout the day and by delayed start it goes on Eco wash about 6 am.

The washer drier and dishwasher only go on if someone is home for the entire programme and are not operated between 22:00 and 06:00.

Thanks to hot flushes the fan is constantly on and as I’m writing this, I remembered we have mechanical ventilation (not air con) but I never turn it on because I forget we have it. The fan is attached to a smart plug which in turn is controlled by the Google assistant via voice commands.

I recommend the Tapo smart plugs which tells you the energy consumption of whatever is plugged into them.

Dishwasher: approx 5 or 6 times a week atm. Was more like 3 or 4 until recently but ds1 home from uni and ds2 off school.

Washing machine: approx 4 or 5 times a week, although ds1 seems to be wearing everything he has before he does a wash.

Tumble drier: almost never, maybe a handful of times a year.

meganna · 13/08/2024 22:46

Dishwasher every other day, 5 or 6 washes a week and probably the equivalent of 3 loads tumble dried a week. Last months electricity bill was £58.

ForGreyKoala · 13/08/2024 22:48

I live alone. My washing machine runs three, sometime four, loads a week. No tumble dryer or dishwasher.

Summertimer · 13/08/2024 22:53

No tumble dryer. Washer about 5 times per week. Dishwasher - slim one not full size - about 9 times per week

hulahooper2 · 13/08/2024 22:56

I live alone , dishwasher maybe twice a week , washing no more than twice a week as I wait till I have a decent load , tumble dryer. aubrey twice a month

CranfordScones · 13/08/2024 23:00

When you say you've had a huge energy bill, is it much higher than usual? For the same appliance usage? If so then that may indicate some other problem which needs investigating.

Get one of those energy monitor plugs and monitor each appliance over a single use and see how many units it consumes - my money's on the dryer, but you'll easily be able to see what everything is using.

Asking about other people's usage isn't really solving your problem...

MyMILisLovely · 13/08/2024 23:02

dishwasher - dishes are washed by hand
washing machine -when there's a full load
tumble dryer - never

FatOaf · 13/08/2024 23:05

Dishwasher once or twice a day, depending on how many of the kids are lodging with me at the time. Always on Eco setting.

Washing machine typically four times a week: three times at 20°C or 30°C and once at 40°C or 60°C.

Tumble drier no more than four or five times a year. Line-dry whenever possible and use an indoor airer the rest of the time, in front of a radiator in winter.

Decafflatteplease · 13/08/2024 23:10

Family of 6. Large draughty Victorian house.

No dishwasher.

Washing machine at least 2 X a day.

Tumble dryer twice a week (90 mins each) for a full load of pants/socks/ wipes etc. plus a couple of times a week for maybe 20 mins to finish stuff off that's been drying outside but isn't fully dry.

Pay £225 a month combined (although we pay over the price cap as our supplier is exempt 🙄). This time of year we are using around £90 and month electric and around £60 a month gas

Ariela · 13/08/2024 23:10

If you get solar, and can run your machines 'when the sun shines', it's effectively free

PickAChew · 13/08/2024 23:12

Dishwasher every day. Washing machine 2-4 times per day. (have an incontinent young adult in the household). Tumble dryer for almost every load unless we have excellent outdoor drying weather.

SunshinyDay1 · 13/08/2024 23:13

@AgentJohnson which balls please

Fizbosshoes · 13/08/2024 23:13

Dishwasher every day
Washing machine maybe 4-5 loads a week. I tried it on an eco setting several times, and the clothes smelled horrible when they came out. but I mostly use a short cycle on 40°.
Tumble dryer is barely used over summer and maybe once a fortnight in winter

(For 2 adults, 2 teens)

DelphiniumBlue · 13/08/2024 23:14

It depends who is in the house, but currently me DH and 2 adult sons, that's 21 shirts and 21 T-shirts a week, plus underwear and say 3 pairs of jeans or shorts each pw, plus my stuff plus towels and bedding- so I d say 10 loads of washing a week, dishwasher daily, tumble dryer never.

ohmyohmy123 · 13/08/2024 23:15

My washing machine is on every few days but I probably do three loads. We are a home of 5 with 3 adults and 2 teens.

Dishwasher probably once or twice a week as it's easier to just wash up and get it out of the way.

Dryer is used occasionally, probably more frequently than I admit. I use an airer and the line but work full time so often if I get home and it's wet I'll stick it in the dryer

TubeScreamer · 13/08/2024 23:18

Dishwasher twice a day - lots of cooking, often 4 separate meals
washing machine one a day
tumble dryer once a day in winter, never April to october

2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs

sunshineandshowers40 · 13/08/2024 23:19

We do the same but I do try and use the tumble dryer less in simmer and probably have the washing machine on more often.

JaceLancs · 13/08/2024 23:20

We don’t have a dishwasher
Washing machine does 4 loads a week of which 2 are tumble dried

Nsky62 · 13/08/2024 23:22

Cat and I, slimline dishwasher averages every other day, washing machine, roughly 2/3 times a week.
i find oven and hob usage eats energy both electric, never noticed cost with dishwasher tho, mainly eco cycles.
Bills vary , and I pay off every month last month £62, prob about the same this month, about as cheap as it gets

PickAChew · 13/08/2024 23:25

RedRobyn2021 · 13/08/2024 20:17

Why use the dryer when it's so hot atm?

It might be where you are. It's been raining here since early afternoon. The UK is notoriously not uniform in its weather.
