To think Keir Starmer holds a lot of sway?

Former Director of Public Prosecutions. Now PM.
Following the 'civil unrest' last week, several perpetrators have been not only arrested and jailed, but publicly named and shamed, the speed of which I have never seen before.
Our PM clearly knows the right people to get things rolling quickly.
This, combined with the anti racism protestors, gives me a glimmer of hope for the future. I feel in safe(ish) hands with Keir.AIBU?

I agree. I feel more optimistic but of course they have a long way to go.

Jeezitneverends · 09/08/2024 18:23

I agree with @Allthecatseverywhereallatonce, but for the first time in a very long time we have a PM who actually LOOKS and TALKS like one instead of the sorry bunch the tories have inflicted on us in recent years

Notonthestairs · 09/08/2024 18:33

It's made a huge difference that the defendants have pleaded guilty - largely because they've been caught on body cams or they've filmed themselves (🙄).

I read 70% had records or were known to the police previously- that also speeds up identifying them and obviously if they've been through the system before they'll understand an early guilty plea will reduce time.

And of course the police, CPS & courts working overtime to stop further offences and dissuade others from joining in.

Chocolateorange22 · 09/08/2024 18:35

I agree he does but I thought the prisons were full? Are other prisoners being sneaked back out before finishing their sentences to allow these rioters in. All to just show action and make a point?

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 09/08/2024 18:36

There is Two Tier policing in lots of different issues.

He needs to rule fairly. Let's see shall we.

No, all to just show that racist rioting won't be tolerated in the UK.

i suspect they have simply crowded more in. More difficult for prisoners and far more difficult to adequately staff but what other choice was there?

Absolutely agree.

maddening · 09/08/2024 18:39

Pity they aren't so fervent when it comes to rape and sexual abuse.

Yogayogayoga · 09/08/2024 18:40

I'm not a fan of the police or the government but I've been impressed with the way this has been handled. Riots on a Monday, arrested on a Tuesday, sent down for 3 years by Thursday. It's comforting to know that things can actually work when they need to.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 09/08/2024 18:42

Yet, they hasn't got round to prosecuting Mr Amaaz for breaking a police woman's nose on 23rd.

Exactly.

I will believe Britain has a credible criminal justice system when anti-Semitic racists are locked up as quickly & efficiently as anti-immigrant racists. Until that happens it remains one law for one set of extremists & a different law for another. And we all know why. Fear.

There are a fair few “foreign sounding” names, if you will, who have also been named and charged with Affray. I am going to assume that these were people who were fighting with the rioters rather than alongside them.

Saggytoot · 09/08/2024 18:44

Im also surprised at the speed of it. Do we have 2 tier sentencing?

Some sentencing seems severe. 20 months for a woman who was one of several who set fire to a wheelie bin?? Meanwhile paedos get suspended ssntences.

I dont think Starmer's all hes cracked up to be.

Yes, amazing how it can work so quickly when he wants the PR.

Pity they aren't so fervent when it comes to rape and sexual abuse.

You need specialist officers and barristers for RASSO cases. They are leaving in droves after years of warning previous governments and is aa significant reason for delayed trials. This is where are best off investing taxpayers money.

(Working on the assumption that the rapists are not pleading guilty like the rioters. pleading guilty will speed things up.)

Spot the non Labour voters

5128gap · 09/08/2024 18:49

He is the prime minister and most powerful man in the country, so I would expect him to have a bit more sway and know a few more of the right people than Dave from the shop (who was also very annoyed about the riots.) However I have been impressed by his quiet and firm action. Its refreshing to see things actually get done rather than all the posturing and sound bites we've become used to from government.

The speed of the courts is not new. It's what happens when there is widespread/ prolonged rioting.🤷‍♀️

I'm amazed at the number of posters with so little knowledge of our justice system and history who, instead of looking at facts immediately jump to conspiracy. You'd think people would fucking learn.🙄

I hope so. Huge numbers of people sent down really don’t need to be incarcerated. Community sentences would be more appropriate.

The thugs imprisoned this week absolutely deserve to be there.

Hardly sneaked, anyway. Reduced sentences were announced before this rubbish all kicked off. Had the Conservative government been returned it would have had to do the same thing because it failed to deal with prison overcrowding for several years.

I for one am mightily relieved that KS and YC have been overseeing the response. I dread to think where the nation would be now had the last shower remained at the helm.

Farage deserves to be locked up for his role in this.

HonestMistake · 09/08/2024 18:52

To be fair, I remember a fair number of the 2011 rioters being hauled into court double quick as well.

Although the criminal justice
system in general has got absolutely crippling delays and under-resourcing; in an ongoing public order emergency there's a standard process to get people into court asap in a high profile way to make it clear to anyone who's considering it that the consequences will be real and earnest.

Aaron95 · 09/08/2024 18:54

There is a precedent. In 2011 people were similarly convicted and sentenced extremely quickly and received lengthy sentences for seemingly minor crimes.

Is that not racist? You can't decide where someone's politics lie based on their name

MarisCapri · 09/08/2024 18:57

More misinformation or at the very least posters ‘using’ their ignorance to make veiled racist claims or to run down a government who are showing that they know what they are doing and act rather than spouting meaningless soundbites?

This is a deterrent and is being prioritised.

It takes a minute to search online.

There have been new prison places created. @Notonthestairs @Chocolateorange22

And no ‘two tier’. Muslim men jailed for violence against right wing activists. @MrsRobinsonsHandprints @WowIlikereallyhateyou

Interesting the jail terms for inviting racist violence online. There will be many keyboard warriors sitting at home worried!

1dayatatime · 09/08/2024 18:58

I'll be more impressed when rape cases are sped up- currently taking an average of 20 months for non barrister cases and 5 years for barrister cases.

news.sky.com/story/crisis-in-barrister-numbers-as-average-wait-for-rape-victims-exceeds-five-years-13070171

The speed of bringing the rioters to court looks more like political capital for Starmer to be seen to be doing something rather than any real progress in the judicial system.
