To think Keir Starmer holds a lot of sway?

Former Director of Public Prosecutions. Now PM.
Following the 'civil unrest' last week, several perpetrators have been not only arrested and jailed, but publicly named and shamed, the speed of which I have never seen before.
Our PM clearly knows the right people to get things rolling quickly.
This, combined with the anti racism protestors, gives me a glimmer of hope for the future. I feel in safe(ish) hands with Keir.AIBU?

@Otherstories2002 announced plans to set up 80 specialist rape courts to deal with the backlog. H2H

Whistles for the dog

This is so depressing, so infantile.

Is that really all you can add to a discussion?

Frankly the thing that scares me the most is the desire by some parts of the left to completely stifle any form of conversation. To write off other views and try to shut down conversation rather than engaging in discussions.

We've seen 'No Debate ' peddled in other areas. Policing and Politics must be without fear or favour for democracy to continue.

And fast tracking rioters will cause further delays

no it won’t as they’re tried in totally different court systems.

your making a lot of statements here that are just factually incorrect, perhaps read some of the links people have posted to educate

Don’t you mean pissed off? In the UK pissed means drunk - I take it you’re not American?

I am English and it means both. Slang evolves.

pissed - to be angry
pissed - to be drunk

I'm not a fan of the police or the government but I've been impressed with the way this has been handled. Riots on a Monday, arrested on a Tuesday, sent down for 3 years by Thursday. It's comforting to know that things can actually work when they need to.

But they chilled on Sunday.....😁

You’re right. They have different police officers. Different lawyers. Different prison systems. All completely different. 🙄

I am not interested in links to pledges. I’m interested in the fast tracking of rioters and harsh sentences whilst men sharing child pornography get suspended sentences. Don’t pledge it - do it. If this is him and he can’t things done this fast then prioritise what actually matters.

I agree, I live in a part of the UK where I wasn't able to vote for Labour. He comes across as being a 'bit boring' but he does seem to be able to get things done unlike the last lot. Can you image Boris bumbling his way through the current crisis!

Imagine Liz Truss being in Starmer's shoes now......😯

I'm pretty sure Liz Truss would have come out and said something stupid though, basically encouraging the rioters, and drawing the crisis out a bit longer.

SallyWD · 09/08/2024 21:41

I agree. I was cynical about him at first but have been very impressed so far. He seems like a sensible, serious man who will do the right thing rather than trying to appeal to Daily Mail readers (like the previous government). I like the way he immediately cancelled the ridiculous Rwanda plan. He didn't care what Reform voters thought, he just did the right thing. I think he is most definitely guided by principles rather than populism. It's so refreshing!
I can't fault how he's dealt with the riots. He immediately came down very hard, talking of thuggish behaviour. I saw people on Mumsnet saying he was wrong to do this, that it was inflammatory language. However, he was completely right to call it out. People of colour were being beaten up, shops were being smashed up, hotels were being set on fire. It was thuggish. I know that the previous government would have pussy footed around, sympathising with the rioters, partly blaming immigrants.
The speed at which justice is being dealt is very impressive. I had no idea it would be so quick and it's definitely deterring others.

Of course. There are magistrate prisons and magistrate police. Who definitely don’t get involved in crown cases. Because they know at the point of arrest.

hey. You. You’re under arrest.

but I’ve committed a crown court offence.

oh shit. Wait there. Crown court police are on their way!

Magistrate court and crown court are distinct but there are absolutely cross overs. And the point is if he had the power to do this then why hasn’t he addressed all the other issues so quickly? Because he has a finger in the pie. It benefits him.

Yes he’s doing good. Sets a narrative and delivers. I mean it’s so long since a PM did that we’ve all forgotten.

i can’t remember the anti Keir narrative on Monday. I think it was he was weak and incompetent. Friday, he hasn’t sorted out the whole justice system and he is too tough.

Or you can listen to some rubbish from Farage who has “questions”. Keir has left him for dust

Yet, they hasn't got round to prosecuting Mr Amaaz for breaking a police woman's nose on 23rd.

I’m going to treat this as a genuine question

Both sides are wanting a lot more time to prepare their case in the example you provided

they wouldn’t want to be given a court date of next week. Also the case will be heard in front of a jury and in a criminal court. It takes a lot more prep to deal with than a guilty plea to be heard by a magistrate, with someone who had their mate film them doing the whole thing.

props to all involved in the current situation for efficiency- something we haven’t seen for ages. Since the 2011 riots probably!

Oh also while we are on the subject could you confirm the name of a crown court prison and the name of a magistrate prison. Seeing as they are completely separate. Thanks!

It does but that isn’t the reason for the delays. And fast tracking rioters will cause further delays.“

Well no, it isn’t. The reason for the delays is the absolute failure of the previous government. We were facing two year delays in the courts prior to the general election.

Yes, it will, obviously. That’s what happens when dickheads decide to riot. They need to be dealt with, pronto.

Rape cases are much, much harder to prosecute than riot cases because they’re rarely caught on CCTV, and even if they were that might not be enough for a conviction. Everyone convicted so far for the riots pleaded guilty, because they knew they were bang to rights and their chances in a jury trial would be nil. Rapists who plead guilty are also dealt with quickly. It’s the ones who plead not guilty who take time, and require lots of specialist expertise, because the cases are extremely difficult to prosecute.

Thank you fir staying the obvious.

HRTQueen · 09/08/2024 21:54

I have been very impressed swift tough action was required and that is what has happened from his leadership, policing and from the judicial system

I like that Starmer is getting on with the work of being PM being involved with what is happening not just giving waffling press conferences

at last a PM that shows leadership of the country (and managing his party)

pointythings · 09/08/2024 21:54

Otherstories2002 · 09/08/2024 21:51

Thank you fir staying the obvious.

If this is obvious then why are you still complaining about rape cases being held up when that manifestly is not happening? Do you acknowledge that the backlog was built under the previous government? Do you accept that the current government are working on dealing with that backlog? Or are you just going to keep on with the sour grapes?

Sugarlily · 09/08/2024 22:08

I think we should stop ‘debating’ with @Otherstories2002 - it’s clearly fruitless as there are a lot of knowledge gaps there, and it’s derailing the thread which was otherwise fairly sensible
