To think Keir Starmer holds a lot of sway?

Former Director of Public Prosecutions. Now PM.
Following the 'civil unrest' last week, several perpetrators have been not only arrested and jailed, but publicly named and shamed, the speed of which I have never seen before.
Our PM clearly knows the right people to get things rolling quickly.
This, combined with the anti racism protestors, gives me a glimmer of hope for the future. I feel in safe(ish) hands with Keir.AIBU?

I’m frankly pissed. The entire judicial system is back logged with victims of crime waiting years.

Something impacted Keir and bang. Fast tracks. Just another privileged white man doing things for himself.

It was a national emergency. A strong message had to be put out, fast.

And the volume of women murdered and raped isn’t?

come off it.

It didn’t impact him. It impacted numerous communities outside London.

There is a precedent. In 2011 people were similarly convicted and sentenced extremely quickly and received lengthy sentences for seemingly minor crimes.

Yes, and Starmer was director of public prosecutions at that point.

HonestMistake · 09/08/2024 19:23

No, it's because it's an ongoing crisis and a message needs to be sent immediately to stop anyone who's thinking about going out to do the same tonight.

Rape cases are immensely serious, and the current multi-year delays are a scandal and a blot on the face of British justice and women's rights, but there's not the same need to get them processed within hours rather than weeks.

And you don’t think the same message needs to be sent out not to rape women? Really?

The backlog was built up by the Tory government. It’s Starmer’s government that’s doing something about it. The ignorance on here is astounding sometimes.

It's also a completely different circumstance. These rioters are pleading guilty at the magistrates court - that's not where rapists would be tried is it? They'd be tried in the crown court in front of a jury? And given how many rape trials don't end in conviction, I doubt they have the same incentive to plead guilty. So it's always going to be a much longer process than these rioters.

I’ve developed a massive crush on him 😳 Wouldn’t admit that IRL.

I have a crush on Wes Streeting which has taken me by surprise!

Yanbu.

Im impressed by his response to this, not only to the anti immigration protesters who rioted, but also those that were looking for violence on the other side too, there have been swift convictions there as well.

The “two tier” narrative is pushed, imo, by those that seek a breakdown, an undermining, in law and order and I’m impressed so far with how the current govt is dealing with this. A former dpp as PM exactly what we need right now.

Seriousness and urgency aren't always the same.

A timetable that would be perfectly reasonable for a rape trial would not be reasonable for a public order crisis, especially for simple cases where there's a guilty plea.

But yes of course the huge delays in rape trials are also sending out the wrong message to rapists. Literally no-one is arguing that they're fine, least of all Keir Starmer.

I agree he does but I thought the prisons were full? Are other prisoners being sneaked back out before finishing their sentences to allow these rioters in. All to just show action and make a point?

I agree with this.

Notonthestairs · 09/08/2024 20:55

Alex Chalke started letting prisoners out early (on licence) last October. This was to free up capacity.

Don’t you mean pissed off? In the UK pissed means drunk - I take it you’re not American?

Saggytoot · 09/08/2024 21:10

Pissed is also popular in UK now for pissed off.

Sorry, what? Bit left field.

Women murdered and raped presumably requires far more forensic scrutiny and case building than knuckle draggers captured bricking police officers caught on camera,

This

DipDopDooDa · 09/08/2024 21:26

I agree with the sentiment of the OP, but to be fair I think the response of the courts would of been the same whoever was PM, even Liz Truss.

It's a pretty standard no-brainer to come down hard and fast, and I think the criminal justice system does this on autopilot.

The most I will say for KS and YC is that they haven't cocked it up by sending mixed messages, which the last lot may well have done.

And good points from PP about this government's plans to address the backlog of rape cases etc. There's a crises there too, and no response will be quick enough to make me happy, but at least there's a serious plan now from people who look like they care, which is a massive improvement on the last lot who didn't seem to give a shit.

I’ve been hugely hugely impressed by Starmer’s leadership over the last week. Feels so good to have competent grown ups back in charge, that actually care for society and not their own interests.

This rape argument is strange. Labour have been in charge 4 weeks and have announced plans to set up 80 rape courts to deal with the issue The Tories built up.

So, actually two Labour good news stories

What have they done about it?

and you’re right re ignorance. You’re ignorant to the fact that rioters were prioritised over rapists. It’s that simple. And this nonsense about you have to because public order offence. Rape is far worse and a much bigger threat. The fact that you’re sweeping it under the carpet says it all.

It does but that isn’t the reason for the delays. And fast tracking rioters will cause further delays.
