To think Keir Starmer holds a lot of sway?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 09/08/2024 18:14

Former Director of Public Prosecutions. Now PM.
Following the 'civil unrest' last week, several perpetrators have been not only arrested and jailed, but publicly named and shamed, the speed of which I have never seen before.
Our PM clearly knows the right people to get things rolling quickly.
This, combined with the anti racism protestors, gives me a glimmer of hope for the future. I feel in safe(ish) hands with Keir.AIBU?

But Starmer hasnt actually done anything? Its police then courts.

Of course the government has done something - the government runs the country, the government coordinates action during crises. More specifically, the government accelerated the additional prison places (were originally scheduled for next month) - without those, the Police and courts would not have been able to take the action they have.

To be fair, I remember a fair number of the 2011 rioters being hauled into court double quick as well.

Although the criminal justice
system in general has got absolutely crippling delays and under-resourcing; in an ongoing public order emergency there's a standard process to get people into court asap in a high profile way to make it clear to anyone who's considering it that the consequences will be real and earnest.

Yes, justice was swift after the 2011 riots as well, and sentences were also fairly harsh, to send a message.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2024 22:26

It happens every few years here in NI.🙈

I think we should stop ‘debating’ with @Otherstories2002 - it’s clearly fruitless as there are a lot of knowledge gaps there, and it’s derailing the thread which was otherwise fairly sensible

No examples of a magistrate and crown prison then? After all they are completely distinct things.

I am impressed at the speed of these convictions. I now hope that he will deal similarly with the anti-Semites that show up at the Palestine protests.

Racism and calls for violence against Jewish people is also abhorrent and should be dealt with.

How do you expect them to be dealt with "similarly" if they're not rioting, looting and committing arson?

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2024 22:52

Why don't you take a wee look at what happened in the justice system during the 2011 riots @Otherstories2002? Or go even further back to the Drumcree riots in the 90s.

Then you will understand what is happening and why. Fill those gaps in your knowledge with facts. You might enjoy it.Wink

You mean when the tories were slated for what Keir is being celebrated for?

Courts failed people ‘caught up’ in England riots in 2011, says ex-chief prosecutor

Custodial sentences for rioters were much harsher, despite a fifth never having committed a crime before

I mean what is happening. Swift arrests. Swift trials. Sentencing or remanding in custody for offenders and suspects.

It's the way the UK has dealt with widespread/prolonged rioting for decades. It is not new.

swimsong · 09/08/2024 23:02

Otherstories2002 · 09/08/2024 21:32

You’re right. They have different police officers. Different lawyers. Different prison systems. All completely different. 🙄

I am not interested in links to pledges. I’m interested in the fast tracking of rioters and harsh sentences whilst men sharing child pornography get suspended sentences. Don’t pledge it - do it. If this is him and he can’t things done this fast then prioritise what actually matters.

Why don't you come right out with it and say you support the rioters? It's really the only explanation as to why you keep ignoring all the very reasonable & informative challenges to your faux outrage.

Notonthestairs · 09/08/2024 23:02

Maybe it's different when you already have a record.

Of those arrested, around 70% had previous convictions including weapon possession, violence and drugs offences, police said.

Doesn’t mean it’s right.

But whether it is or not it’s certainly not an example of brilliance where Keir is concerned.

Odd leap. I definitely do not support the rioters at all. But I also don’t think Keir was anything to do with the reason it’s died down. They run out of steam eventually. Plus look what happened in Brighton.

It’s more than possible to think Keir is useless and be disgusted in the rioters.

Also I think you were going to add some facts to your taking the piss out of me and stating that magistrate and crown entirely separate with no cross over of prisons, policing etc. examples of prisons seems the easiest way to put me in my box. I have asked nicely 3 times now.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 09/08/2024 23:05

All hail the dear Leader!

Lonelycrab · 09/08/2024 23:08

The 2011 riots didn’t have all the footage (as we’ve all seen of the rioting) captured by smartphone and published all over SM like we have now. So convictions can be quicker (and easier to get) because of all those videos and pictures.

What lessons do you think weren't learned from the 2011 riots? How do you think things could have been improved this time?

I am English and it means both. Slang evolves.

pissed - to be angry
pissed - to be drunk

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pissed

The actual link you posted even splits it. British - drunk, American - annoyed. In England it means drunk.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2024 23:25

Oh, is @Otherstories2002 not from here? It would explain a lot.

Sugarlily · 09/08/2024 23:37

Or @Otherstories2002 is literally uk pissed. That might explain the nonsensical posts!

it’s called language evolving. You don’t have to be American to use American sayings. 🙄

Still not going to accept the very clear and factual explanations you have been provided with?

greengreyblue · 10/08/2024 09:14

This is a good start. It’s the first real challenge he’s had to act on that wasn’t planned or known when they took power. You can’t blame him for historical cases .

Bontonbonbon · 10/08/2024 09:21

Wow! Some people do read some crap online and seem to have no ability for rational thought.

Two tier policing isn’t a thing. If you read widely (outside social media bubbles and the tabloids) you’ll see that there have been arrests in the counter protests for inciting hatred too- I clueing a former Labour councillor who has been suspended from the party.

You would also know that these cats track trials are because of guilty pleas- the not guilty pleas will take a lot longer. If a defendant pleads not guilty then there has to be a trial with all the related evidence gathering and paperwork. The backlog is made up of these types of trials.

You’re also be able to rationalise that this was a national emergency and therefore took priority as part of the effort to stop the riots spreading.

Honestly, it’s crystal clear of you take your social media specs off.

Yet, they hasn't got round to prosecuting Mr Amaaz for breaking a police woman's nose on 23rd.

Assaulting a member of the police should result in a jail sentence for any individual, but it doesn’t. How can that be?
