Or are they just greedy bastards?

Made a bolognaise pasta sauce type thing with 1 kg of minced beef steak.
Onions, peppers and mushrooms added.
Have come home from work and DH and DS 18 have polished the bloody lot off leaving me with a measly ladle full of sauce
( pasta was cooked separately for clarification)
They are most of that too

Even in my house, with two epic male eaters, that would be 2x block servings with seconds; 2 girlie servings and a 1-2 modest portions as left overs.

It’s not just the quantity they ate but the selfishness in leaving you bugger all.

gardenmusic · 08/08/2024 18:29

I would be delighted if mine did that. I always over-cook and chuck whatever is left for the fox. We have a visiting fox. (Rural area). I don't chuck fillet steak, salmon steaks, etc. But spagbol, for goodness sake, you are so mean!

You would be delighted if your husband and son polished off a generous meal meant for two days (cooked by you) and left you just a token bit?
Should she smile sweetly this evening and get cooking again, or should she leave it until she gets home from work tomorrow?

Anewuser · 08/08/2024 18:24

Yes, they’re greedy bastards but take it as a compliment, they enjoy your cooking.

Probably threw it down their necks! Not sure it's a compliment at all. Bit of an old fashioned viewpoint of justifying male greed.

FictionalCharacter · 08/08/2024 18:32

I know they said they were hungry blah blah, but didn't you point out that they didn't even leave you a portion? What did they say about that? It's not just greedy, it's really selfish.

TheBizzies · 08/08/2024 17:42

Mince is the new magic chicken I see

Quite.

500g doing 12 portions. Nonsense.

Rosscameasdoody · 08/08/2024 18:34

AFmammaG · 08/08/2024 17:23

It’s not how much they ate that makes them greedy, it’s not leaving any for you that does.

It is absolutely how much they ate that makes them greedy !! 1kg of mince - come on. I use around 500g of mince with sauces and veg added and it feeds four of us. Of course it’s greedy - not to mention selfish. I wouldn’t be cooking it again OP.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/08/2024 18:34

Is 1 kg of mince going to become the new Mumsnet chicken ? that feeds a whole large family for days ( if not weeks ) and that's with the leftovers frozen for a later date.

A Kilo of mince (over 2lb) with added veg and sauce, plus pasta. Don’t be so bloody ridiculous. Not mean at all, and an indication of how selfish people can be.

YouMustBeHappyNow · 08/08/2024 18:38

If I cook a lot I have to put some in tupperwares straight away or I'd have the same thing.

Growlybear83 · 08/08/2024 18:38

I would be very annoyed if there was no food left for me, but I would only expect a kilo of mince to feed four people.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 08/08/2024 18:39

You made it sound like you didn't have enough for your dinner but you did, you just didn't have leftovers, it's not ideal, but not as bad as you first made out.

No, because they've made more work for tomorrow - which I think we all know they aren't going to do. OP will have to do it. Such a lack of thought for how OP is planning meals and cooking to make sure everyone is fed.

AFmammaG · 08/08/2024 17:23

It's both. They'd be cooking their own food for a good while. I'd be really angry. Fuck that.

TonTonMacoute · 08/08/2024 18:39

Greedy - and selfish.

🤣🤣🤣

I usually make spag bol with a half kilo of mince and that would do at least 4 meals, more like 6 (4 main meals plus two smaller portions for lunch).

Packetofcrispsplease · 08/08/2024 18:45

That’s greedy of them and really mean to leave you with next to nothing.
I used to make a spaghetti bolognaise with 500g mince plus onions , mushrooms etc and that fed 2 adults , 2 teens and an older child !

Cornflakes44 · 08/08/2024 18:46

HunterDuke · 08/08/2024 17:28

I once cooked an entire side of salmon, left it in the oven and went for a shower. It was to be mixed with quinoa, veg and portioned out for a week. Came downstairs and my OH was finishing it off. The whole.bloody thing. He doesn't like salmon much. If I am cooking I need to be there at plating up or he would eat everything - literally everything in the pans or in the oven. It's insane.

That's actually disgusting behaviour. How selfish and greedy of him. Not sure I could respect someone with such little impulse control. He sounds like a child.

Over 2lb of mince cooked with veg and sauce, and served with pasta ? Seriously ? Do you know what a kilo of mince looks like ?

I suspect most children would know better. He reminds me of some of the spaniels I've had.

Growlybear83 · 08/08/2024 18:51

@Rosscameasdoody Yes of course I know what a kilo of mince looks like. I used 500g of mince last night to make a bolognese for two of us.

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 08/08/2024 18:55

Well if this thread goes to show anything (apart from OP's DH and DS being greedy bastards) it has to be that some people must be having their bolognese like that value stuff from Tesco where it's all spaghetti and a few flecks of mince, whereas some others are probably having some pasta with their meat!

lowlight · 08/08/2024 18:55

My husband and kids do the same with a bolognese or chilli con carne sauce. I think it something to do with lack of chewing and it can be quickly gulped down in very large quantities. If you had been dishing up no doubt they would have had more pasta /rice.

I have literally just caught my husband spooning chilli out the slow cooker straight into his mouth....

TheTripThatWasnt · 08/08/2024 18:56

snackatack · 08/08/2024 18:16

the person saying 500g - for 6 people - for 2 meals - no...

1kg - should do 6 meals (more if you pack it with beans and lentils)

Yep - 500g would do that for bolognese here. I'd expect to freeze 4-5 2 person servings after the original meal. The portions are not enormous, but they are very intense in flavour, so they don't need to be. I stir the bolognese through cooked pasta rather than heaping it on top, so it's very much a sauce rather than a thing in its own right.

A bolognese would have a couple of onions, a few carrots, a tub of mushrooms, half a pack of bacon/lardons and plenty of tomatoes/wine in it, so the 500g mince goes a long way.

DoIWantTo · 08/08/2024 18:56

You FROZE their wraps?!? Grin Grin Grin

Georgieporgie29 · 08/08/2024 18:58

Ah bloody hell I fancy spag Bol or chilli now after this!

Just for balance 1kg of chilli would feed 4 of us one night and 3 would have burritos or similar the next day. 3 adults and 1 teen

TheTripThatWasnt · 08/08/2024 19:00

I had to sense check quantities (as I've never used a recipe). BBC Good Good says 500g feeds 6, so a kilo should feed 12!

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/best-spaghetti-bolognese-recipe

Although they only allow 66g spaghetti per person, which feels very stingy indeed. We always have 75g pasta and I think we're on the smaller side of portion sizes, in general.
