Made a bolognaise pasta sauce type thing with 1 kg of minced beef steak.
Onions, peppers and mushrooms added.
Have come home from work and DH and DS 18 have polished the bloody lot off leaving me with a measly ladle full of sauce
( pasta was cooked separately for clarification)
They are most of that too

Sweet Jesus that does me and my husband 2 nights in a row dinner with a little bit left to freeze for my lunch in days going into office. I would be cracking up big time

Well they can welcome on the early onset of colon cancer if they carry that sort of level of red meat munching up.

It's pretty disgusting from so many angles.

No one needs half a kilo of beef.

https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/news-and-blogs/news/bowel-cancer-uk-urges-the-public-to-continue-to-limit-their-red-meat-intake/

Tell them they're eating veggies for the rest of the week and it's for their own health.

I'd open a couple of cans of cold beans and say there you go. If you're so hungry, you can eat those for 6 days now to help you stay healthy.

We urge the public to continue to limit their red meat intake

We urge the public to continue following the recommendation to limit red meat intake to three portions a week and reduce the amount of processed meat they eat.

bought everyone a McDonald’s. I ate my chips but left my burger downstairs whilst I put my daughter to bed, came downstairs to find my ex had eaten it along with his. When I asked “why” he replied with “you wouldn’t have eaten it” erm, a chance to decide would have been nice.

He was a selfish fuck anyway. 🙄

Wallywobbles · 08/08/2024 19:02

1kg of mince in our house would have about 1.5 kg of veg in it. Grated carrots, courgettes, tomatoes, onions etc. So if that's the case with you they'd have eaten a truly outrageous amount.

Shouldn't have to outsmart family members for meals 😆they should learn some consideration for others!

Of course they should, but bitter experience has proved that it's much simpler to be one step ahead when I've cooked several meals'-worth of food rather than have to find a last minute substitute for my planned meal.
I also shouldn't have to hide the chocolate, but a certain person has long forgotten the gut-rot he got for eating the FOUR-pack of chocolate bars that was in the kitchen cupboard , in the space of an afternoon, not leaving me even one tiny square of chocolate!

Genuine Q - are people saying 500g feeds 2 and 1kg feeds 4 extremely active, or overweight?

As an aside, the authentic Italian way is to have a pretty small portion of the meat sauce, not drowning the pasta in it!

IggyAce · 08/08/2024 19:07

Definitely greedy. Since they’ve eaten tomorrow’s dinner make sure you get yourself takeaway and let them fend for themselves.
Good move freezing the wraps.

curious79 · 08/08/2024 19:07

Total greedy dustbins! I would expect that to cover 8 people
my son and DH will polish off everything if given a chance. Also fat knackered

My husband and I are neither overweight nor particularly active. I'm not Italian, so I don't really give a toss how they prefer to eat their bolognaise and pasta.

Blackthorne · 08/08/2024 19:09

And it's just so disrespectful to you when you've gone to the trouble of cooking it all and just leave you a measly ladle full.

It's the selfishness that's most galling. I'd be furious.

I once cooked an entire side of salmon, left it in the oven and went for a shower. It was to be mixed with quinoa, veg and portioned out for a week. Came downstairs and my OH was finishing it off. The whole.bloody thing. He doesn't like salmon much. If I am cooking I need to be there at plating up or he would eat everything - literally everything in the pans or in the oven. It's insane.

Aww 🥺😁 I find this endearing for some insane reason. It's kind of sweet. He must have been ravenous. Really, a whole salmon though? Haha

Seems like a huge quantity to me. You don't need more than 100g of beef per person. If you want to live a long healthy life that is...

honeylulu · 08/08/2024 19:13

Greedy and so so selfish! My dad used to do that to my mum. He'd then act all innocent and say "oh I thought you'd already had some".

My husband and son would not dare try that with me. I would hit the roof. I'm actually quite even tempered but being deprived of food I was looking forward to, no no no!

Wishicouldlovemyself · 08/08/2024 19:13

Yanbu, that's really unreasonable.

For us, 1kg of mince mixed with veggies and sauce, etc, would generally make between 8 and 10 servings, served alongside pasta.

Even serving extra large portions, I'd get a minimum of 6 portions out of that.

amoreoamicizia · 08/08/2024 19:16

Sorry but the idea of someone eating a whole salmon while their other half was in the shower is killing me. I'm crying with laughter 😂

Yeah. I'd love to see you cooing about how 'sweet' it was if it had been your whole side of freshly cooked salmon.

amoreoamicizia · 08/08/2024 19:18

Well I live alone so I can laugh or find it sweet. Yes, if it happened to me I'd be raging- that's kind of why I choose to live alone, though!

How is that sweet? It just seems greedy at best.

Crosspost.

Cherrysoup · 08/08/2024 19:22

I’d be raging at how little they left for you. I hope you have serious words.

cannellonies · 08/08/2024 19:24

Flossyts · 08/08/2024 17:30

I use 500g to make for our family of 5. That was a large amount of food to eat. How rude of them when they had no part in making it. I hope they apologise profusely.

What ages are you all? Also it depends on how much you bulk it out with tomatoes, carrots etc

TypingoftheDead · 08/08/2024 19:25

Sorry OP, but they’re greedy and selfish! I wouldn’t be cooking for them again if I could avoid it.

ToBoneOrNotToBone · 08/08/2024 19:29

TheBizzies · 08/08/2024 17:42

Mince is the new magic chicken I see

Glad someone said it.

To be clear, I think the DH and DS are out of order for not leaving OP enough but I use 750g of mince for chilli or bolognaise and that feeds 2 adults & 2 kids (9 & 6) for dinner and possibly one portion left for DH lunch the next day. Definitely not near the levels that other posters are claiming

Greally · 08/08/2024 19:29

That would also cover 8 generous portions in my house. That is seriously greedy and seriously selfish.

Bunny44 · 08/08/2024 19:34

I live with my parents and in my house we eat such tiny portions it's really hard to imagine this. Tbh too small for me but I still wouldn't help myself to more. My mum does all the cooking and me and my dad would never dream of helping ourselves to what she'd prepared without asking or saving her any! We're usually quite generous with each other I.e. always insisting someone else has the last piece.

I remember my boyfriend at uni sometimes eating all my food though and being so angry especially as I didn't have a car or much money so was really upsetting 😭. He was a nice person generally but just a bit oblivious at times. And he was 18.

Why are some DH's so selfish?? Can't imagine marrying someone that thoughtless.

cannellonies · 08/08/2024 19:36

Comparing how many people 500 grams of mince would feed is really irrelevant.

I can cook 500 grams and it will be enough for 3 hungry adults or teenagers. Or I can batch cook and bulk it out with carrots, lots of chopped vegetables and chopped tomatoes etc and it will feed many more.

It’s impossible to compare. Does your family consist of hungry teenagers and people who burn calories at work or is it elderly people not eating much or people working from home or sitting still most of the day,
