To be fed up with the riots being called “UK riots”?

When.. they are the vast majority in England.

I’ve heard of one in NI: and none in Scotland or Wales.

You do know that Scotland already had an independence referendum?

Yes but only because the Westminster Parliament gave its permission.

AinmEile · 06/08/2024 21:07

We have also had them in Ireland. I think far right inspired riots would do?

Yeah there were loads of riots in the Republic of Ireland.

I remember people saying at the time that the rioters were all egging each other on online from different countries.

They're all connected on social media

Pennydropping · 06/08/2024 21:11

It’s ignorance and written for the world news. I am currently abroad and people don’t know England, Wales, Scotland and NI.

It’s the UK to them. Whether you like it or not

(but YANBU!)

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/08/2024 21:11

There have also been a lot of riots in Northern Ireland.

Oh, ok stand corrected. It’s been reported in England as one in Belfast (that was linked to local factional grievances). Apologies.

Abigail47 · 06/08/2024 21:07

What do you mean

"No they do not".

You do know that Scotland already had an independence referendum, yes?

I mean that "Scotland" does not have the authority to call legally binding referenda with regard to its own continued participation in the UK.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-63727562

The 2014 Referendum came about as a result of the Edinburgh Agreement 2012, in which Westminster agreed to permit the Scottish government to hold a one-time, legally binding referendum on the question, which would also bind Westminster and the remainder of the UK into respecting the outcome. It was not, and is not a transfer of that power on an ongoing, perpetual basis, which is why the Scottish Government did not simply call another referendum despite winning back to back elections on the basis of seeking to do so.

Independence referendum: Scottish government loses indyref2 court case

The Supreme Court rules that an independence referendum cannot be held without UK government's consent.

Abigail47 · 06/08/2024 21:12

Does it really matter anyway.

They call it the UK riots to refer to geographical location.

Not to piss of Welsh and Scottish people

tuvamoodyson · 06/08/2024 21:13

JaggyJumper · 06/08/2024 19:46

Agreed if it was only happening in wales and Scotland it wouldn’t be called uk riots

Exactly. Some people talk about ‘England’ meaning the UK…as if the the other 3 nations didn’t exist!

Growlybear83 · 06/08/2024 21:14

If there's been a riot in Northern Ireland as well as the riots in England, then surely they are UK riots? Or has Northern Ireland been removed from the United Kingdom?

Abigail47 · 06/08/2024 21:14

On the flip side, I feel like I'm never allowed to say the word 'English' anymore. People want you to say UK, instead of English.

If I say 'I'm english',
people say to me "don't you mean that you're from the UK.

There is a sense sometimes of us all losing a bit of our national identity.

We are an unusual country in that we are four countries within a country. The UK is also classed as a country.

And we are often made to refer to our collective country, rather than our individual country

Marchitectmummy · 06/08/2024 21:19

Bouliegirl · 06/08/2024 20:16

We’re really not better than our neighbours. But at this moment: we don’t have riots in Scotland.

it gets a bit tiresome that often the media focus on England (particularly on MN)

I'm English and can understand what you are saying, and I agree there is a lot of resentment built up from bad reporting and referencing to each of our countries.

Abigail47 · 06/08/2024 21:22

tuvamoodyson · 06/08/2024 21:13

The U.K is a nation in itself.

We are all connected.

AlbaAurora · 06/08/2024 21:23

English Riots and in NI sadly because of the unionist sectarian link to England.

Yes, we are…but I’ve often heard England being said in a way that implies England is Britain, hence my post.

If it were to kick off in Scotland Dundee would be my guess
Christ some inhabitants couldn't do Halloween like normal people.

I hope to fuck not. They were just wee tinks being tinks.

The riots are concentrated in areas with high levels of ethnic minorities. Scotland is 95% white. It’s not hard to work out why there are fewer rioters in Scotland. It doesn’t make scotland ‘nicer’ than the rest of the UK.

And 3.5% of the population in NI is not white but they are rioting.

The loyalist thugs seem to have overcome their usual hatred of Irish people in a show of racist unity with the racist thugs from Dublin who joined them.

I hope it doesn't everyone deserves to live in peace.
Those poor people cowering in their home's is a disgusting scenario regardless of which country.

"One in NI" 🙄 I guarantee you there has been many more than one. illinformed.

Of course there are!! It's been bad for a few nights, businesses burned out, homes attacked! D'ye really think the knuckledraggers would pass up on the chance of a riot? Pros here ffs!

Treesinmygarden · 06/08/2024 21:44

AlbaAurora · 06/08/2024 21:23

It's not. There's nationalists involved too as well as rioters coming up from Dublin. The PSNI seem to suspect a paramilitary element. Well it's in their DNA isn't it!!

Can't see it.

If there's any bother here I would imagine it will be George Square, for a number of reasons -

  1. Most of the agitators who will be coming by bus/train couldn't point to Dundee on a map of Scotland, but will be able to negotiate their way to Glasgow Central.
  2. It's inevitable that the "protestors" will be waving union flags, and a portion of them will be wearing colours of that same Glasgow football club that seems to appear every time there's bother in Scotland. Funny how this claimed "tiny minority" of morons pop up here, there, and everywhere.

Regardless, PS usually do a pretty good job of kettling the morons, so I expect they'll do their usual of getting blind drunk, urinating everywhere, climbing statues, singing "party" songs, only to melt into the ether as per.

Which is in the UK.

And NI, unfortunately.

I have lived in 2 places in Scotland and the diversity largely extends to ginger or not ginger. Scotland is in no way as diverse as England, nor does it home anywhere near the number of immigrants.

While I’m laughing at “ginger or not ginger”…
Glasgow has an ethnic minority rate of 11.5%… and Dundee has an ethnic minority rate of 10%…

The particular area I live in is very ethnically diverse: my son’s class includes kids from Bulgaria, Algeria, Nigeria, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

its not all white in Scotland

Which club?

VitaminSeaside · 06/08/2024 21:55

There was one in my small town and it stopped me from taking my child to the beach that day. Hopefully they won't do it again here.

I can only imagine you aren't Scots.
