When.. they are the vast majority in England.

I’ve heard of one in NI: and none in Scotland or Wales.

It’s not racism. The riots are simply not happening in Scotland and Wales right now

But they are happening in the UK.

Scottish person complains about racism with racism, classic.

Not one part about the OP was racist.

Couldn't be because not only are those areas nowhere near as densely populated, they are much much less culturally diverse? You are part of the UK whether you like it or not..

winniethepooped · 06/08/2024 20:05

"One in NI" 🙄 I guarantee you there has been many more than one. illinformed.

LadyChilli · 06/08/2024 20:06

Yes it caught my attention this morning that the BBC website had a graphic showing the number of arrests on a map of the "UK" with most of Scotland cut off. But all reporting was about the UK riots. We are different culturally in Scotland and certainly in Glasgow sectarian violence is far more likely than racist violence. So it's not to suggest we're without our problems but they aren't the same problems.

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 20:08

BBC Scotland reporting that there is intelligence of disorder planned in Scotland.

Exactly: they don’t say that the Uk has a sectarian problem. It’s Scotland and Ireland that have a sectarian problem

to be fair:
the focus on the news has mainly been the ones in England

Do you really think a 'we are better than our neighbours' thread is the way forward during a period of people being attacked for being of different ethnicities?

Really tone deaf.

MassiveSaladEater · 06/08/2024 20:14

Blackbirdinfinity · 06/08/2024 19:45

The riots are concentrated in areas with high levels of ethnic minorities. Scotland is 95% white. It’s not hard to work out why there are fewer rioters in Scotland. It doesn’t make scotland ‘nicer’ than the rest of the UK.

It's not true that they have been concentrated in areas with high levels of ethnic minorities. There have been none here in London apart from a group who travelled to Downing Street. There have been none in London neighbourhoods. Yet another reason to love London, especially SE London where I live. Very ethnically diverse, and it works. I read disparaging comments about 'Sadiq's London' as if it's a hell hole here. It's not. Multiculturalism works here.

ssd · 06/08/2024 20:16

Scotland and London both voted remain. Just saying.

We’re really not better than our neighbours. But at this moment: we don’t have riots in Scotland.

it gets a bit tiresome that often the media focus on England (particularly on MN)

Bigger things going on in the world than anyone caring that the riots are called UK riots. Honestly.

Nobody has suggested that areas without riots are "nicer"
(or, from an even stupider poster, that people in not rioting areas feel "left out" 🙄)

Just that the first step to understanding something is to name it correctly. As you say yourself, there are probably valid reasons why they are happening in some areas and not others which it would very likely be useful for a social, political or even practical (i.e. police preventive planning) perspective to understand.

As a pp said when there are riots in northern ireland they are never referred to as UK riots. Riots in Paris aren't referred to as European riots. If you search for the 2011 riots they are referred to as '2011 English riots' so fair enough to query why in this case it's different.

YogaForDummies · 06/08/2024 20:22

Also they're surely only called UK riots in international reporting, here they're just called the riots? Why do you even care? I expect maybe if you get your news from twitter you must be bothered.

WickieRoy · 06/08/2024 20:25

I'm the first to complain when people use "UK" to mean "England", it happens all the time on here. This isn't the time to make an issue of it though, especially when two of the four constituent countries of the UK have in fact had riots.

(My phone really wants to write Tories instead of riots. A different if related problem!)

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 20:26

I agree with the OP. Especially as the rioters in England probably largely see themselves as English first. The organisation associated with Stephen Yaxley-Lennon is the English Defence League.

Northern Ireland is even 'whiter' or less ethnically diverse than Scotland

In fairness, they didn't get their usual July riot here, have to get it out of the system before summer is over.

I don’t get my news from Twitter. rather odd thing to say.

If Al-Jazeera call them the UK riots, then yeah, I understand that.

But within the UK, the Guardian are referring to them as UK riots.

So if it doesn't matter why not call the EDL the UKDL??

It reminds me of the scene in Outnumbered, with Andy Murray. The young girl Karen is questioning him about his job and asks but are you Scottish or British? He says I'm British when i win and Scottish when i lose. Anyone Scottish would nod at that.

There are densely populated cities within Scotland, with a fairly diverse ethnic make up.

Both sides riot often which you'll
know if you’re in NI, not just in July. The riots were in Derry over March/April/May. On Saturday many communities were rioting together which was extremely unusual to see, in fact I think it was a first…. And obviously hopefully the last.

Newsenmum · 06/08/2024 20:38

Well they might 🙄 I don’t think you’re immune. Belfast isn’t England. Uk is fine. Most English cities are fine btw.

Agree. Rioting in NI is extremely common place throughout July and August year on year, this is just a slight change up of reason.
