To ask if you think the Olympic boxers are male?

1000 replies

ArabellaScott · 06/08/2024 15:22

The finals for both boxers are tonight and tomorrow.

I'm curious to hear whether people think they are females with a DSD, or males with a DSD.

YABU - they're female
YANBU - they're male

I seem to remember including a Ukrainian who would surely be number one on a Russian shit list.

But most importantly if it was a big fat Russian lie the 'targeted' athletes would just prove it was a lie! The only way this could gain enough traction to be worth the effort is if it can't be easily disproved and the one way the nasty conspirators could know it can't be disproved is because.......drum roll it's actually true.

The pres of the IBA is Russian. The vice president is Ukrainian.

So the VP of the IBA would have a pretty good reason to 'out the boss' if you swallow the 'it was all done on the say so of one man, it wasn't even ratified by the rest of the IBA' line (which clearly isn't true).

Did you even read that article? Bacyadan is a transman competing in the women's category - as he should. He isn't protesting their right to compete at all.

An excerpt:

'Bacyadan said of Khelif and Li Quan: 'I am fully aware that these two athletes are cisgender women.
'They are unquestionably women, fully deserving of their place in the competition. 'The criticism they are receiving on social media is entirely unfounded and unjust ... this level of unfounded scrutiny is unfair to them.'

Why is Bacyadan being quoted here? They have no specialist information

Another thread on AIBU about the BBC article

AIBU to point people to an article on the BBC website about the gender row on boxing at the Olympics? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5138014-aibu-to-point-people-to-an-article-on-the-bbc-website-about-the-gender-row-on-boxing-at-the-olympics

@ArabellaScott

The pres of the IBA is Russian. The vice president is Ukrainian.

Arabella - why do you think the IBA banned Ukraine's boxing federation in 2022, then? Things aren't quite so clear-cut.

That quote was in the article. It shows an entirely different view to the one the poster thought.

The Russian boxer conspiracy theory is mental, I don't know why people are so keen to repeat this hogwash.

They can never adequately explain it either, it's just handwaving over the details. I've yet to see any credible answer to these questions:

  1. How do you explain the blood sample for sex testing being taken and sent to the lab four days earlier than Khelif's match against Amineva?
  2. How do you explain Lin Yu-ting, who fought no Russian boxers, being declared ineligible for the same reason as Khelif?

@MessinaBloom Why do you think the IBA has gone after these two boxers in particular? Why do you think the boxers haven't exposed the lie (you seem to think it is a lie) by appealing to CAS?

After a lot of family members saying trans women are women no argument, it’s interesting to see that they all agree that feeling like a woman on the inside is not enough to let you compete in women’s sports. I think this boxing match has thrown a stark light on an issue that gets shut down too quickly.

Yep there's no pithy thought-terminating slogan for this issue.

It's literally all they have, which is why they are clinging to it like limpets

I quite agree. People use it as a convenient excuse not to think about what is going on. I'm proud that we've had such a detailed discussion here across multiple threads and topics and spreading that conspiracy theory misinformation as fact has been shot down here.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/08/2024 11:56

@ailicis it's great to have someone on the thread from rural Algeria who can give informed comment on some of the background info about the culture Imane grew up in. Do you happen to speak the dialect Imane does (I gather it's not standard Arabic [edit: just checked and apparently it's Darija)?

I don't believe it has much - if anything - to do with Russian boxers.

Perhaps because they do look more androgynous than most? Or it's known they have DSDs? And remember who has the power and money here. Hint: not the boxers.

Shot down? 😁 Lovely that you think other people's opinions are "convenient excuses not to think".

MushMonster · 09/08/2024 13:14

Intersex.
It is for a medical team to examine them and conclude whether they can compete in the women's category or not.
That will be based on a comprehensive test, not just chromosomes or passports or the size of their hips..,..
We cannot guess what they are, because we do not have any access to any data related to the medicals on the athletes.

This is going beyond the beyond.
It is unfair to all the boxers and harrassment of some.
They really should have clarified beforehand. Or make a proper effort to clarify it now.

No. A cheek swab will be the first test.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/08/2024 13:19

It's not an opinion, it's some made up shit that was spread on Reddit as disinformation and people just blindly went along with it. There is no credibility to it.

MushMonster · 09/08/2024 13:31

It is for the doctors that have the task to define whether these athletes can compete on the women category to decide which test is done first.
Not for any of us.
Nd that is a fact.

And the doctor ultimately responsible for this decision, a gyneacologist specialist and sports doctor, DID have the tests results and made the conclusions.

It is not any of 'us' who has made the conclusions. It is a medical specialist.

All of this could be stopped by a 2 minute swab test.

And as I posted before, what is the end goal of these boxers? they are banned from boxing by 3 different governing bodies.
As it stands they may win gold but it will be tarred and then what will they do?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/08/2024 13:42

Sorry for not giving you much time to answer, @ailicis but I'm going out and realised we might run out of thread before I get back. So on the offchance that you have the relevant language skills, are you able to comment on this claim that Imane uses the masculine form of nouns? https://x.com/sif30000/status/1820040398959448284?

And the relevant doctors tested twice and decided that they weren't eligible.

P.s. intersex is an outdated and somewhat offensive term.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/08/2024 13:53

(The Tweets appear to be from a Moroccan who is not keen on Algeria, so not an unbiased source, hence asking from a view from someone else who actually has the language knowledge to assess it. My Arabic is limited to reading numbers, so I have no idea if the claim is bollocks or convincing.)
