Good job it’s not compulsory.

So true. If it were compulsory to allow dogs into swimming pools I think they’d all close within a week.

UtterlyOtterly · 14/09/2024 17:54

Human only pools are gross.

Pools with dogs are even more gross.

Wild swimming in dirty lakes and rivers is extremely gross.

I can get plenty of exercise without swimming.

It's such a pity to see such poor reading and comprehension evidenced on here.🙄

Zanatdy · 14/09/2024 18:05

Yeah I have a dog but no, I don’t think it’s a good idea

Kingsleadhat · 14/09/2024 18:11

They only do it at the end of the season when the pool is closed to people. Then it's drained and disinfected before people's sessions start up again .

Let us know if you get any illness, or if you don't. And if you do what the response of the venue management is. Even if I agreed with dog swims there is no way I would give the people who run that venue one penny.

A pity as Saltdean is a lovely place.

What illness is PP going to get from being in the same water as a dog?
Why are dog hydro therapists (who also get in with the dog) not dropping like flies with some dog related illness?

According to a post further up, some lidos do it regularly, not just once/twice at the end of the season.

I can't imagine they drain and disinfect the pool every time, surely it's too expensive to do that?

It's true, if you think about it too much you can't use a swimming pool!

A hydro pool is a bit different to a swimming pool.

It is still a person in the same body of water as a dog. What is the issue? Hydro therapists are not swimming with their canine clients, and the owners at the lido are also not swimming... they are just stood in the water with their doggy companions.

Swimming pools are full of chlorine because people are gross. Swimmers are dipping their mouths and faces in the same water that has been washing over the anuses of other people.

The Saltdean Lido does about four dog sessions I think but no human sessions in between and then they drain and clean after the last session before opening back up to humans

Do you often want to go and swim outdoors, at the end of the season, at a venue that specifically welcomes dogs ONLY on the last few days before they shut down and clean the whole system out?

I suspect you also like to book dog friendly holiday cottages and then moan about it smelling of dogs, or sit in the dog friendly area of the pub and moan that dogs are looking at you.

What a strange conclusion to come to based on my post. 🤔

To be clear:

I do my best to avoid anywhere where there are/have been dogs. Unfortunately, the smelly beasts seem to be everywhere nowadays.

Of course I do not and would not choose to swim with dogs. For the reasons I have already outlined.

I certainly don't like to book "dog friendly" holiday cottages. You are right about one thing though, if I did book a supposedly pet-free holiday cottage that turned out to be stinky dogiferous hellhole, I would complain like hell about it.

As for the "dog friendly" area of a pub why in the name of all that's holy do you think I would choose to sit there? 😱

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/09/2024 22:36

Because you're moaning about there being dogs in a Lido when it is closed to people who do not want to swim with dogs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/09/2024 23:02

I’d like it, and so would my dds and Gdcs.

Yes it was on today and seemed to be popular. The human season is over, as you say, and the pool will be drained and cleaned afterwards.

Dogs are very popular in the area - as they are many places these days - and I guess they saw a demand. It’s not disgusting because it’s after the human season ends.

Yes, many PP moaning like they are turning up to this lido (when they are not even local and have never been there), and a random dog will be swimming alongside them.

It is a dog only session. You can only go if you have a dog.

I think the sessions are quite pricey and are fundraisers for the Lido restoration work. I met a very happy damp dog on the bus today and his owner told me that you have to book ahead for these sessions, they're very in demand and they're £14 for an hour and a half

Swimming pools are gross - I said above you can't think too much about what's in there with you.

But they would be even more gross if animals of the non-human variety were let in.

I think this is where dog lovers and non-dog lovers just can't agree. Dog lovers don't think there's anything unhygienic about hugging/kissing a dog, having it in bed with you etc. Whereas people who aren't dog lovers just think yuck. But it's no different really to people thinking yuck how can you not change your sheets evert other day/week/fortnight/year (the last is a joke by the way, though don't look too closely at a student's bed, or more to the point, sniff it).

Hygiene is in the nose of the er sniffer.

Just popped back to update, that thanks to this I booked it and the dog had a fabulous time

@2024riot

I'm glad your dog had a great time!

My friend took his Dog to our local one & they had a fab day, Dog had fun, but would only paddle, not actually swim which he does haiku in the river/lakes near us.

i think there were too many stinky humans in it for his liking! 🤣🤣🤣

I actually think there were too many humans standing around in it, in black clothing & it freaked him out a bit, but he had a great day anyway paddling about with his toys & his Dad! Undivided attention!

I was gutted as I was going to go too, but a migraine put a stop to that idea 🥹

2024riot · 15/09/2024 19:02

@Ponkpinkpink15 I would never have known about this if I hadn't seen this post !

The dog came home and slept all day as she was exhausted. We had an amazing time plus I shall definitely book myself in to swim at that lido when the season opens

Mercurial123 · 16/09/2024 09:31

It's good to see some more positive responses. It's a fun for the dogs and helps maintain the lido.

Swimming pools with humans are disgusting places. I've just contracted ring worm from my local pool....

Im 55, my local lido is the one I used to enjoy as a child (haven't always lived local. Lived in several different countries, but have 'come home' like a roosting pigeon!🤣🤣)

I love going.

I hope you enjoy it next summer too & get her booked in quickly for doggy days so she doesn't miss out.

BMW6 · 16/09/2024 16:05

I wonder how many of the posters decrying it swim in the sea, where countless billions and billions of creatures have lived, shat, died and decomposed over millions of years?
