@YeOldeGreyhound

Genuinely curious not to dismiss what @sunglassesonthetable was talking about. It might be true what you're saying; I know that it's only food preparation areas that have official restrictions on dogs, so it's up to the preference of the cafe/shop etc whether they allow dogs in. Lots of people think that's a 'breach' of something, and it is: it's a breach of their own personal boundaries, and they need to understand that their boundaries aren't the same as everyone else's.

Not sure if this one's the same, but interested to hear the specifics and am open to being corrected by an expert in the field, if the PP is one.

@Watchkeys Lol I was responding to a poster saying this was a High Risk event. Dogs off lead etc. Just everyday sarcasm.

Wtafdidido · 06/08/2024 14:52

It is rank and I say that as dog owner. One of my dogs would sh*t as soon as it got in the water and I have no doubt many pee

In what sense?

Posters who just make up random comments without checking are a bit thick. That's worse than embarrassing.

Mercurial123 · 06/08/2024 14:54

My comment should be to @greenbananasoup

MN is full of threads about how it is vile that dogs are allowed in cafes... they cite hygiene issues, yet those same dog friendly cafes have 5* ratings.

Your are right... it is up to the people who runs such establishments as to whether to allow dogs or not.. and in some place (such as Lake District), the canine £ goes far.

Kids pee in swimming pools all the time. And there are babies in swim nappies... maybe the solids are kept out but the water still goes through them, and out again.
Enjoy your backstroke.

@Mercurial123

It wasn't a random comment. It was part of a discussion. But you'd have to read the thread to see that.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 14:59

Apologies @Mercurial123 . You weren't speaking to me .

I would love this and my golden retriever would love it too. Sadly we are a fair way from Brighton and she doesn't travel well.

I do agree that it's gross, but I suspect that people with dogs who aren't good in water won't be taking their dogs to a lido, and no humans who think it's gross will be taking part, so I don't see the issue?

In what sense?

Their obsession with bringing their dogs everywhere with them, and especially wanting to swim with them. They rely on you for food, they’re not your friend.

.... The swim days at Lidos are not about 'dog owners want to take their dog everywhere' ... they're catering to dog owners who want to go and do fun stuff with their dogs.

You can also take your dog to do agility, man-trailing, parkour classes, trick dog classes, cani-x running and a whole lot more.

Lots of dog owners, good dog owners, take their dogs to do fun stuff because its good for the dog and amazingly, they enjoy spending time with their dog!

Dogs rely on us for a lot more than just food, if thats all someone is supplying their dog then they're not doing a great job there.

Yes she loves swimming. Swims in the sea often.

You’re swimming in water which has literally cleaned the arsehole of every single person that’s used it, a few dogs aren’t going to make much difference.

Brilliant!

If you stopped feeding it, and someone else started, do you honestly think doggy would stay loyal to you?

perfectstorm · 06/08/2024 12:10

Though I would love it more if someone located a parking concern. Or queues? But mostly parking.

Saltdean is about the only place in the area where it is easy to park. Sorry if that is disappointing.

I’m pretty sure my other friends would also bugger off if I neglected them.

Yes

Probably would. Dogs are pack animals, and they release a lot of the 'love' hormones around humans they trust and rely on. Cats are colony animals, not pack, so they're oriented towards food and comfort. They'll jump ship and adopt a new owner in a heartbeat. But dogs are like humans, in valuing affection. We dogsit for friends, as we don't have a life right now that can encompass a dog of our own, and one of the dogs genuinely loves us more than the owners. It's actually quite embarrassing. Another tolerates us, but basically longs for the owner to return - other than my husband; she dotes on my husband even though he never walks or feeds her at all.

Dogs have an evolutionary urge to form close social bonds, like people. So yeah, I think dogs are loyal, because they're genetically programmed to be over years of that conveying an evolutionary advantage. Just like we are.

Doesn't mean anyone should have to be anywhere near dogs if they don't like them, far less swim with them. But if you're okay with being in a pool with little kids in swim nappies, then you've probably had more exposure to faecal matter in the water than any dog will bring.

Hobbes8 · 06/08/2024 16:49

Exactly. I wouldn't stop feeding her because I love her, just like most people wouldn't consider starving their children. Don't get me wrong though, I love her as a dog, I don't think she is a fur baby or dress her up or any such nonsense but dogs do have personalities and often considered part of the family.

Aww, that's a shame. I was hoping the Mumsnet bingo card could really kick up a gear.
