Beyond disgusting

We are luckily enough to be in Paris watching some of the Olympics - it has been fantastic - bit hot and steamy, poor air con but waiters actually trying to understand my poor french rather than the usual dismissive look!

Staying in an average 4star hotel, air con average but it has been vv hot and humid. Old converted office type building, narrow corridors and 4 small rooms on our floor.

We came back last night to a stench - only way to describe it. Then realised what it was, the American family in the room opposite had left their childs diaper folded up on the floor outside their room - not bagged. Their door is opposite ours about 1.5 metres away.

Went into our room, aircon had not been on all day and it honked. Opened windows sprayed deodorant no luck.

At 2330 - had had enough, knocked gently on their door, baby crying so not asleep. Mum opens it with a second diaper in her hand, bent down and put it on the floor by the other one and then said can I help you?

Now fairly obvious at this point one of her DCs has the trots - but who in their right mind thinks it is ok, to wrap up your childs diaper and leave it on the corridor for other guests to smell.

I politely asked her to put them in the bin
REsponse : I can't they smell so bad.
ME: Why do you think it is OK to share your childs stinking shits with other guests by leaving them in the corridor - my room stinks
REsponse: this is normal in the USA
ME: Well normal in Europe is to bag them and put them in the garbage, can I suggest you do that and take them outside to a bin on the street.
REsponse: No way, it is too late and started to close the door
ME: You really are disgusting - and promptly kicked the diapers into their room before she shut the door
REsponse : you can't do that
Me: watch me, either you bin them or I will bang on your door every 5 minutes, wake up your kids until you do

Two other doors opened to see what was going on - both American families who defended their friends actions.

So I offered to bang on all their doors until someone put them in a bin.
Stand off - I raised my hand to bang on the door and one of the men picked them up and legged it down the stairs.

I have not smelt anything quite that bad for a long long time.

They called me all sorts of names but seriously this can not be normal American behaviour?

I agree it's disgusting, but I would not have reduced myself to squabbling in the corridor. Phone reception, let them take it up with mannerless guests.

This is the first post I even vaguely relate to.

Yes it was foul - of course it was.

But I’m cringing at the way you handled it. Kicked them into the room?!

Honestly, you sound really rough and crass… I’m sorry. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t see why people are applauding you ( or, tbh, how you came on here clearly looking to be applauded.) Why do so many people now think two wrongs make a right? It’s the beginning of a disintegration of society.

Peanuts2000 · 05/08/2024 17:44

Well done OP. They are really disgusting. No-one in their right mind would think this is acceptable behaviour.

GlitteryRainbow · 05/08/2024 18:07

If the poo was contained in the nappies and not over the floor where they were left they aren’t that bad to deal with. Chambermaids deal with a lot worse when cleaning rooms after guests leave. Especially if those guests have been ill.

That’s right. Guests are often on pressed timetables and without the wherewithal to clean up after themselves in the normal way. In the circumstances, I’d have taken them out to a street bin, but it will be far from the worst thing cleaning staff have grappled with.
Im sorry: when it comes to the race to the bottom I think Britain got there first this time; US only second place.

Weald56 · 05/08/2024 18:14

Bet they are all f*cking Trump supporters!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/08/2024 18:15

People sure are getting worked up about something that never happened... 🤔

Jaxhog · 05/08/2024 18:28

This is absolutely NOT typical American behaviour!! I've stayed in many, many hotels there and have never come across this.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/08/2024 18:33

None of my american friends would do this. CF behaviour of the highest order.

Buffs · 05/08/2024 18:49

I live in the US , their behavior is not normal.

CanINapNow · 05/08/2024 18:57

Just back from a holiday. We took Ocado single use shopping bags with us as a makeshift nappy bin. Kept in bathroom. Took outside hotel to a litter bin when it smelt. Common decency and good sense.

fetchacloth · 05/08/2024 19:07

It might be normal behaviour in America, but the point is that it's indecent behaviour.

DisabledDemon · 05/08/2024 19:09

I've never come across this sort of behaviour anywhere! And certainly not regarded as normal.

laraitopbanana · 05/08/2024 19:27

Justcallmebebes · 04/08/2024 19:25

Why on earth would staff be expected to deal with stinky nappies when the parents could have bagged them up and put them in a bin?

Probably because from a non confrontational view, it seems nicer 🤷🏼‍♀️

But yeah sure knock to the door will work too. And in France, live like French people and they will defo have knocked at the door to make you bin it so…all in all 👌🏼

the « bad comments » were obviously happen as you chose confrontation. Noone is wrong…a very different point of view though!

VickyPollard25 · 05/08/2024 19:46

You deserve nothing but applause. How disgusting! How that is normal anywhere defies understanding.

You are enforcing the boundaries of decency with these revolting people. If you’d let it go they would keep doing it. So very well done you!

I’m wondering if the username was chosen especially for this response…

You obviously feel some bit irrational or guilty if you've posted here looking for back up..I'm sure you're happy to see all your fellow selfish , arrogant uncaring, self centred friends have backed you up. A decent person would offer a helping hand not ridiculed a family with sick children.. I hope you're never in that position yourself.

A decent person wouldn’t leave a bag full of shite in a hallway

LlynTegid · 05/08/2024 20:01

Have you since spoken to the hotel manager to get them kicked out of the hotel?

It wasn't a bag of shite.
Seems a game of telephone has emerged in this imaginary scenario.

takeittakeit · 05/08/2024 20:28

Apologies for the late up date - more important things to do in Paris with the Olympics!
This did happen, yes they were American - they mentioned it ( but I had my suspicions already) I did not take a full blow kick at the nappies for fear of poonami - it was more a push with my toe over the threshold of their room.

I started calm but the way the woman spoke to me -as if I was being unreasonable and holdig her second gift to the other hotel guests in her hand meant she was going to keep doing this all night

This morning we were greeted by a bin outside their room door, still an odour but nothing like unwrapped nappies/diapers So yes the hotel staff did give them another bin but why anyone still thinks it is ok to put this in a small corridor and not on their balcony speaks more about their hygiene levels than mine!

Not a thug but I will not sleep in the smell of someone elses shit when there are viable alternatives for the owners of the shit to behave differently If standing up for my children is wrong then C'est la vie!

So they didn’t even put the nappy in a nappy bag?! absolutely disgusting!

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 05/08/2024 20:39

So what did they do to make you "have your suspicions" that they were American?

takeittakeit · 05/08/2024 20:58

Three families with 2 children each - over the preceding 2 days can be heard talking - which I have no interest in - small chance they were Canadian but I would be crucified by family if I mixed the 2 accents! Seen them at breakfast and one of the daughters asking for a Twinkie as she did not like the pain au chocolat, trying to explain to their kids that the food was different in France to that back home in Florida - gave me a vague idea!

Wanting Twinkies for breakfast, well of course. It IS our National Breakfast Dish after all.
