Beyond disgusting

We are luckily enough to be in Paris watching some of the Olympics - it has been fantastic - bit hot and steamy, poor air con but waiters actually trying to understand my poor french rather than the usual dismissive look!

Staying in an average 4star hotel, air con average but it has been vv hot and humid. Old converted office type building, narrow corridors and 4 small rooms on our floor.

We came back last night to a stench - only way to describe it. Then realised what it was, the American family in the room opposite had left their childs diaper folded up on the floor outside their room - not bagged. Their door is opposite ours about 1.5 metres away.

Went into our room, aircon had not been on all day and it honked. Opened windows sprayed deodorant no luck.

At 2330 - had had enough, knocked gently on their door, baby crying so not asleep. Mum opens it with a second diaper in her hand, bent down and put it on the floor by the other one and then said can I help you?

Now fairly obvious at this point one of her DCs has the trots - but who in their right mind thinks it is ok, to wrap up your childs diaper and leave it on the corridor for other guests to smell.

I politely asked her to put them in the bin
REsponse : I can't they smell so bad.
ME: Why do you think it is OK to share your childs stinking shits with other guests by leaving them in the corridor - my room stinks
REsponse: this is normal in the USA
ME: Well normal in Europe is to bag them and put them in the garbage, can I suggest you do that and take them outside to a bin on the street.
REsponse: No way, it is too late and started to close the door
ME: You really are disgusting - and promptly kicked the diapers into their room before she shut the door
REsponse : you can't do that
Me: watch me, either you bin them or I will bang on your door every 5 minutes, wake up your kids until you do

Two other doors opened to see what was going on - both American families who defended their friends actions.

So I offered to bang on all their doors until someone put them in a bin.
Stand off - I raised my hand to bang on the door and one of the men picked them up and legged it down the stairs.

I have not smelt anything quite that bad for a long long time.

They called me all sorts of names but seriously this can not be normal American behaviour?

I have a poor gag reflex when it comes to this and a poo phobia. I would have literally thrown up outside her door...

Possibly she was expecting them to be taken away by hotel staff but really? I'd be putting it in the bag meant for laundry and finding a way of disposing of it asap. Not leaving it in a communal hallway!

People sure are getting worked up about something that never happened... 🤔

Why never happened?

I seriously doubt OP shits in hotel corridors and then expects everyone else to put up with the stench. Give your head a wobble.

Nobody shat in the corridor though did they Debbie. Nobody. OP threatened to scare the shit out of everyone’s kids because of a nappy. You ‘give your head a wobble’, whatever that sad collection of words means.

I'm sure all this happened. Werent you afraid all those Americans would pull a gun on you???

Behave. This happened in Paris, France, not Paris Texas.

Exactly. That would be quite a different thread.

It’s a nappy - and I’m surprised what a hoo-ha a dirty nappy is causing on a forum for mums. Yup they can be stinky little things babies!

I’ve been reluctant to say this as I think making this an “American” thing has been really off; if anything Europe can be far grubbier than the US ( still remember plenty of open hole-in-the-floor loos in cafe-tabacs in rural France when I was young). BUT I would say when I have stayed in the US the hotel staff seem to move around a lot more in the night, cleaning corridors, restocking vending machines etc. Its quite possible they expected if they put it out - as one does with room service trays to be collected - that someone would whip along and bundle it off to the main hotel bins well before it became a problem. I love France, but have to say the maid service and room service is very much a thing that happens on their timetable- and nothing wrong with that. But I have been caught out before in France stepping out of the room in the morning and finding last night’s dessert and coffee cups and plates still there. Nearly stepped in them!

… that said, the dessert ( cream patisseries) had been perfection! Every country has its strengths and weaknesses!

Did you go to the reception and report this health hazard and also ask for another room away from these disgusting people?

In Paris, in summer, in the middle of the Olympics, yes I'm sure they had lots of empty rooms to spare.

Apparently there are lots of vacancies. Wish I had known earlier and I would have went over…

So what did they do to make you "have your suspicions" that they were American?

Being American is totally irrelevant here, isn't it. This is about one stinky careless individual! I cannot BELIEVE she put unwrapped stinky diapers in the corridor!!!!!

UnfriendMe · 06/08/2024 17:52

That is disgusting and it is the job of the parent to put their kids' diapers in the bin. Why do parents of small children think it's ok to be so disgusting all the time while the rest of us just put up with their shit? American here and this would 100% not be tolerated in America. Now, someone knocking on her door and throwing the diapers in the room when she opened it, that I could see happening in America.

Blondiebeachbabe · 06/08/2024 17:59

Obviously it's not ideal, BUT, they were dealing with a poorly baby by the sounds of it.

Your aggression sounds way out of hand. As for kicking the nappies into the room, honestly, you're lucky you didn't get yourself into an unsafe position, in my opinion. I know loads of people who would see that as crossing a line and would have come at you.

I assume you're aggressive in general. It's all well and good (for you), until you cross someone with a worse temper than you.

There was more than one of them to care for the baby! I’ve had baby twins both with diarrhoea and didn’t do this. We somehow still managed to put the used nappies in a nappy bag and then in a bin bag in a bin

You would THINK it should be irrelevant, but any time someone on MN can get in a dig at America/Americans they are all over it. I do wonder if she would have mentioned their Nationality if they had been Canadian, Australian or British for example.

VividQuoter · 06/08/2024 19:36

that is weird. Stay overs in 4 stars have complete service, so the cleaner should have taken the nappy bags, wether they are in the bathroom bin or outside the door. Are you sure is 4 star

takeittakeit · 06/08/2024 19:58

Very sure this is a 4 star - bin outside door again this morning.

If they had said this was normally in Australia, Germany, Denmark, France - I would have been asking the same question about that nationality. They said this was normal for the US.
I did not for one minute think this was normal American behaviour but you ahve to admire the balls for them to claim it for a nation!
I know alot about them because they do talk .at Breakfast and people hear!

They are disgusting specimens of human kind - I do nto think this of all Americans

For those of you doubting the hotel - Google Hotel Atmospheres, Paris It is a lovely little hotel which I would recommend just not some of the fellow guests!

‘Watch me…’ 🤣🤣
You are my hero, with good football skills too🤣

Missmarymack2 · 06/08/2024 20:24

This is so disgusting and I don’t blame you. Why couldn’t one of them run out and put it in a street bin. I admire you for dealing with this situation without involving hotel staff .

Katemax82 · 06/08/2024 21:27

Happiestwhen · 04/08/2024 20:32

Maybe they were waiting for a few nappies to build up, they could have been running up and down the stairs all night otherwise. Have some empathy. The poor dc(s) are unwell and the parents are having to deal with it all but yeah you just be unhelpful, selfish, irrational & mean
That's bound to help them 🙄

then they should have put the nappies in bags inside their room

takeittakeit · 06/08/2024 21:39

bagged on the balcony or even unbagged on their balcony not outside my hotel room door and this thread would not have existed

While I personally would not have put the nappies outside the room (I’d put it in our own bin or take them outside to a bin) you sound completely unhinged, rude and aggressive.

It is fair to politely ask them to move the nappies however when they politely refuse, to threaten to knock on their door every 5 minutes all night is a massive overreaction. You sound like an aggressive thug, you should be ashamed of your behaviour and I’m not surprised they called you names.

You could have just called the reception, told them about the situation and let them take care of it. I’m sure anyone with any degree of good customer service would have found a solution….give them bags so they could bag them up, explain where an appropriate bin is, provide them with a bin with a lid so they don’t have to go outside in the middle of the night when they’re trying to deal with a poorly baby etc etc

Maybe next time don’t be so led by your rage.

Funny how one persons assertiveness is another’s “unhinged, rude and aggressive”.

Well if we were in the same hotel and I banged on your door in the middle of the night and told you I was going to continue banging on your door all night and wake your children up until you complied with my demands I hope you would think “wow, what an assertive woman! Love her!!” because I can tell you it’s not what I would be thinking!!

Yeah I can’t say I have the same reverent regard for ”assertiveness” that many on MN do. Given the affection for it, you’d think it meant something like “diplomatically effective.” Which it doesn’t.
