Beyond disgusting

We are luckily enough to be in Paris watching some of the Olympics - it has been fantastic - bit hot and steamy, poor air con but waiters actually trying to understand my poor french rather than the usual dismissive look!

Staying in an average 4star hotel, air con average but it has been vv hot and humid. Old converted office type building, narrow corridors and 4 small rooms on our floor.

We came back last night to a stench - only way to describe it. Then realised what it was, the American family in the room opposite had left their childs diaper folded up on the floor outside their room - not bagged. Their door is opposite ours about 1.5 metres away.

Went into our room, aircon had not been on all day and it honked. Opened windows sprayed deodorant no luck.

At 2330 - had had enough, knocked gently on their door, baby crying so not asleep. Mum opens it with a second diaper in her hand, bent down and put it on the floor by the other one and then said can I help you?

Now fairly obvious at this point one of her DCs has the trots - but who in their right mind thinks it is ok, to wrap up your childs diaper and leave it on the corridor for other guests to smell.

I politely asked her to put them in the bin
REsponse : I can't they smell so bad.
ME: Why do you think it is OK to share your childs stinking shits with other guests by leaving them in the corridor - my room stinks
REsponse: this is normal in the USA
ME: Well normal in Europe is to bag them and put them in the garbage, can I suggest you do that and take them outside to a bin on the street.
REsponse: No way, it is too late and started to close the door
ME: You really are disgusting - and promptly kicked the diapers into their room before she shut the door
REsponse : you can't do that
Me: watch me, either you bin them or I will bang on your door every 5 minutes, wake up your kids until you do

Two other doors opened to see what was going on - both American families who defended their friends actions.

So I offered to bang on all their doors until someone put them in a bin.
Stand off - I raised my hand to bang on the door and one of the men picked them up and legged it down the stairs.

I have not smelt anything quite that bad for a long long time.

They called me all sorts of names but seriously this can not be normal American behaviour?

You said garbage and diapers? I don’t know why but I just imagined you sounding like Joss Stone at the Brits, circa 2007, during this altercation.

ChubSeedsYorkie · 04/08/2024 19:49

Omg from! Good for you. I went to baby change in Waitrose today and the stench was so bad I couldn’t change my baby it was making me wretch so I know the smell!

takeittakeit · 04/08/2024 19:49

Booting them - hardly, small push with my trainer just over the threshold!

Not squabbling - calm voices, no shouting until the other fmilies weighed in and yes 3 couples all with kids - so plenty of spare adults to do the dirty deed.

Calling reception would have meant the reception staff would have had to carry them down stairs - not fair. Their family shit, they put it in an appropriate place - not a hotel corridor x2

Well done OP, and I don't see a problem with you booting the nappies back into their room. Nobody else wants to smell other peoples baby's shit. Have a word with reception because they will probablybso it again , the dirty fuckers

Now that is really the height of laziness from them, plenty spare adults ti take shitty nappies to the bin ! I was thinking maybe it was a mum on her own n she didn’t know that else to do - Altho had it been me id still not have left shitty nappies in a hotel corridor ! Xxx

takeittakeit · 04/08/2024 19:52

I am not British!
Diapers are US terminology as is garbage - I was translating for the Americans so ther was no cultural misunderstanding

In my 57 years in america I’ve never heard of or seen this done. Nasty lazy ass trashy americans do it I guess bc literally never seen people leave trash of any kind outside their hotel room door except room service setup trays.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2024 19:56

Where are you from, OP? I’m only asking because you say diaper, which is very rarely used in the U.K.

CuttySarcasm · 04/08/2024 19:56

That’s disgusting! I can’t imagine the entitlement of thinking it’s ok for everyone to smell my kids nappy in a communal space! Unreal.

BlackForestCake · 04/08/2024 19:59

I'll believe some wild things about America but I don't believe that even there it's normal to leave unwrapped shitty nappies on the floor for hotel staff to dispose of like it was just like taking away a used coffee cup.

Jennyathemall · 04/08/2024 20:02

This is definitely not normal American practice.

Lilysgoneshopping · 04/08/2024 20:04

I just messaged my UK based American friend and she was horrified and no way does any American she knows has ever done this

PassingStranger · 04/08/2024 20:04

All you had to do was tell the reception instead of all that aggression.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/08/2024 20:05

That is disgusting, but you don't sound like a very nice person

RowenaVerbena · 04/08/2024 20:05

@Wulf Wtf?

PassingStranger · 04/08/2024 20:04

Why in earth should the OP make it receptions problem?

you’re a brave woman OP well done 😊

paperrockscissors · 04/08/2024 20:06

Thats pretty gross but I find it astonishing that you kicked them back into their room. Quite agressive infact and a massive overreaction. You clearly also have an issue with Americans. Why is that?

fairlygoodmother · 04/08/2024 20:07

I live in America and have stayed in a lot of hotels. It's normal to leave your dirty plates from room service outside your door. Not your child's dirty nappies.

IvanaFooq · 04/08/2024 20:08

Is it a cultural thing?

SpuytenDuyvil · 04/08/2024 20:09

That is revolting and you handled it great. I am American and I have never never run into a situation like that--we've had babies, been with friends who have babies and we all brought many extra plastic bags with us when traveling, not to mention wipes. I am sorry you think this is "American." I assure you it is not. It's disgusting people

ttcat37 · 04/08/2024 20:09

I’m sure your shit doesn’t stink!
I’d be more concerned about your thuggish behaviour than a dirty nappy. Open a window and ring down to reception if you feel so aggrieved, like a normal person, rather than shouting and threatening people.

oakleaffy · 04/08/2024 20:09

What foul, disgusting, lazy entitled guests they are.

We once visited a National Trust place where the women's loos reeked so badly It was hard not to vomit.

A friend said ''It's the nappy bin''. {Hot weather}

Disposable nappies seem to hold so much poo these days- revolting.

Those idle hotel guests leaving their child's malodorous diapers for poor hotel staff to pick up is beyond shameful.
