Feminists against sex segregation in sports

Tandora · 03/08/2024 21:22

AIBU to share a different perspective on a subject that seems to be almost entirely taken for granted on mumsnet? This is not something I have a definite opinion on myself (although I am against sex testing and I fully support the rights of trans women and women with differences in sex development to compete alongside other women in sporting competitions at all levels).

However I have found it really upsetting the degrading way that people have been speaking recently about top/ elite female athletes; denigrating their sporting prowess, and portraying them as weak, feeble and helpless, particularly in the wake of this boxing match controversy.

I started looking into opinions on the issue, starting with a search on “feminists against sex segregation in sport”. I came across this really interesting article.

AIBU to share?

one of the central points made in the article: accepting sex segregation in sport as the universal default reinforces harmful gender stereotypes, as well as sex segregation in other domains

What on earth have you been reading where you've seen things like that??

I've not seen anyone describing the female athletes as weak, feeble or helpless. Could you give some examples of where you've seen this ie actual quotes?

OP is upset that the realists among us know that men have an advantage in sport and that's why sport should be sex segregated.

She thought that examples of women beating men at sport debunked our theory so we pointed out that the men woman can beat would so mediocre they would not qualify for elite men's competition. And from that we get the claim about women being portrayed as weak and feeble which was not what was said. But here we are...

It's dishonest and disingenuous nonsense.

What harmful gender stereotypes does it reinforce?

Bruisername · 03/08/2024 21:46

No sex segregation means no women’s sport. How very progressive

ignoring biological differences would make sport unfair and potentially very dangerous.

I take it you'd be perfectly happy to get into a boxing ring with Tyson Fury then? You know, because he's obviously not stronger than you at all.

Mens advantage in sport is not a stereotype is a scientific fact.

Top female athletes sporting prowess is tested against other female athletes just as males is tested against other males. It is obvious why. It is a complete mystery why there are no women claiming to be men cutting a swathe through the male competitions isn't it? Now why do you think that is?

Watch the mixed swimming medley relay and then come here and tell us that the men have no advantage over the women.

My daughter is working hard with the aim become a professional in her chosen sport . If there were no women’s competition she wouldn’t get past club level. No amount of hard work would get her past the advantages of male puberty & testosterone.

Hahahahah sure, you have no definite opinion, you've just done about a zillion posts on numerous threads posting opinions dressed up as fact in favour of men being able to beat up women under the cover of "sport". But no definite opinion. Sure.

But to answer your 'question' (ha), no, it is not denigrating elite female athletes to point out that we have sex segregation in sport because men have significant sporting advantages over women. Nor is it denigrating children to have age segregated completions, nor is it being mean to featherweight boxers to be clear there's a reason they don't fight in the heavyweight category.

It is idiotic* to pretend otherwise.

*other illuminating words are available

Hahahahah sure, you have no definite opinion

I really don’t have a definite about sex segregation in sports. This article isnt arguing doing away all sex segregation, but suggesting that it shouldn’t be the default, but on a case by case basis each sport should have to justify and meet a burden for proving why it is necessary in that case.
this makes sense to me
i also wonder if we should stratify based on a range of nuanced criteria, rather than binary sex.

So do you think the Algerian Muslim boxer that is winning the women's medal in the Olympics is a feminist icon as there are no pictures of this boxer wearing a hijab despite claiming Allah is behind the win?

BlueLimeRun · 03/08/2024 21:49

Transwomen are biologically men. Why do you want men in women's sports? That's like saying you think the over 40s should participate in the under 12s. It isn't safe or fair so we don't do it.

Yabu, males being in women’s sports is ridiculous and unfair as well as unsafe in some sports.

This^

We don't see all the trans men clamouring to compete in the men's events, do we?

Can't imagine why. Confused

OhcantthInkofaname · 03/08/2024 21:50

The difference that I have with your opinion is that I don't believe that merely believing you are a woman is enough to make you female. The boxer in question has increased testosterone and other defined male characteristics (bone and muscle differences) because they were born with XY chromosomes. This gives them a clear advantage to female.

@Tandora sex segregation isn't a universal default. If you knew anything about sport you'd know that.
