Sorry if the title is slightly misleading! 😆

My partner has bought a 65 inch tv and it is bloody huge !

We are redecorating out living room and I was so excited that I could finally have my Neptune like room. Something stylish and calm and inviting.

I now have the monster on my wall ! And I have it :(

I now have no idea how to stylus around it !! Any ideas??

I am feeling unreasonably upset about this and I just can’t get over it.

our room is only 4m x 3.5m so not a large room at all

AIBU?

help me to her over it please or share tips to make the room work

I bought a big tv a few years ago, and didn’t get used to it at all. I was quite happy when it got broken by the toddler, and I replaced it with something much smaller. That’s not to say I judge those who like the bigger screens, I just couldn’t get comfortable with it.

I’m now at the point where I watch so little tv that the one I have will last longer than me! I’m in my napping and listening to Spotify section of life. Grin

I'm on my napping and Spotify stage of life

I think we could be friends! 😂

charlieinthehaystack · 05/08/2024 08:55

ridiculous but it seems that men like tvs the bigger the better I would be tempted to crack it over his head but more practically ask him to change it

Gowlett · 05/08/2024 09:05

I absolutely hate our huge TV. And associated tech set-up.
I don’t watch the telly, but DH & DS are glued to the thing…

Not heard back from the op but there's a lot of people assuming that they didn't agree to a 65" TV.

Maybe they did but didn't realise how big it would look.

The opening post from the OP clearly says that isn't the case. Her husband bought it and she hates it. It really wasn't difficult to understand.

Oh how I love my 15 year old 32" flat screen telly.

That felt too big when I bought it but I'm used to it now. There's no way I'd have anything bigger.

My partner got rid of his 55" or whatever it was tv when he moved in because I said I didn't want it.

When this one dies (which I'm guessing it will at some point), I'm not planning on replacing it.

Yes. Bigger TVs will upscale low resolution pictures to look better on the larger TVs. The more expensive the TV in general the better quality the upscaling.

However there is a limit to how far you can go with this so people invented higher resolution pictures !

Nearly all TVs above 43" these days are capable of 4k resolution display (UHD) which looks much better than standard pictures (but not significantly better than HD pictures on smaller TVs). UHD broadcasting is still not available on terrestrial but you can get it on some services like Sky, Amazon and Iplayer. These pictures look absolutely stunning, not only because of the 4K resolution but they also use high dynamic range colour, which for me is much more of an upgrade for intermediate size TVs (say less than 60") than the HD to 4K resolution upgrade.

BBC 1 Wildlife programs on Iplayer in UHD are an excellent way of seeing the best your TV can offer.

In addition the HD format (lower than UHD but better than standard TV) is becoming more and more common and now there are terrestrial channels on Freeview that are in this format and most streams are in this format as standard.

I think within the next few years HD will establish itself as a basic standard, if it hasn't already. 4K will take a few years because of the data bandwidth it requires. There are some 8K TVs around, most of which are enormous, but my gut feeling is 8K will never become a standard format because the TV sizes you need to really benefit from it (say 80"+) are just not compatible with the size of most peoples living rooms - in the UK at least.

I had to Google ''4m x 3.5m'' into feet - 13 x 11 feet? - I see what you mean about the huge gogglebox and small room! It would take up a huge amount of space!

I hate TV's, so does my hubby, we refuse to have them in our household and business, one that size would freak us out!

When we're in hotels, B&B's etc. we have to toss a towel over the TV as even though they're switched off, we can't bear having those things ''looking'' at us.

I don't know what advise to give but I sympathize with you!

Oh god I hate huge TV’s in small rooms. Why do men want such a massive TV?

Compensation!?!

PfishFood · 05/08/2024 10:24

DH and I had an agreement when we bought our first house together. I was left in total control of all decorating decisions and he chose the TVs. I too hate the 65 inch TV taking up the entire corner of the living room, but the trade off of having the final say on the rest of the house was worth it for me! Plus, it does mean I can sit the other end of the living room and watch TV without having to put my glasses on.

He did discuss it with me beforehand though, and I mocked up the screen size using some cardboard boxes, so he could see the size in situ beforehand.

TVs always look smaller in the shop than they do in real life.

He had been looking at a 70 inch (I think) but the cardboard mock up made him realise that not only was it too big for the room, it didn't actually fit either!

GasPanic · 05/08/2024 10:41

Yeah cardboard or plastic sheet mockup is a good idea !

I did it with my TVs. You can normally find the dimensions on line for each set easily enough.

BrainWontWorkAnymore · 05/08/2024 13:12

Well he can buy a large house for it to live in. You then need to decide whether to go with him.

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 06/08/2024 07:51

Big TVs work in the right rooms. This isn’t the right room. Why the lack of discussion between you both?

Arrivapercy · 06/08/2024 14:43

There are guides about the distance you need to sit from a tv that size, and that room literally is not large enough.

Its quite bad for your vision to sit too close to a large screen. Can you show him some guides like this and work out what size can actually fit?

JudgeJ · 06/08/2024 19:46

Jennyathemall · 04/08/2024 07:05

Presumably it says they can afford it and you can’t.

Hardly lovey!

Can I ask why you have such an aversion to tv?

It's interesting to me that people are often quite opposed to them. I'm a former actress and will always have a love of good movies and television. Preforming arts will always be my passion.

Is there a reason you hate them? Do you enjoy the theater?

My mum was adamant we'd get square eyed if we sat too close to the TV. GrinGrin

Reminds me of a Matilda song: 'The bigger the telly, the smarter the man'
No offence!

expatorimmigrant · 07/08/2024 06:24

Have him return it and get a Samsung frame. You can choose which art is displayed and change it whenever you like. They really don't look like tvs. No way would I have the giant black eye.

ZippyCat · 02/01/2025 01:09

We have a 85 inch Samsung TV it's the bain of my life it was bloody hard getting it on the stand then lifting it wish we had stuck with our 42 now but on this note we're selling this tv now due to moving and i can't wait till it goes

greengreyblue · 02/01/2025 09:17

Swap it for a 45 inch. That’s plenty big enough . Does he have poor eyesight?
