Sorry if the title is slightly misleading! 😆

My partner has bought a 65 inch tv and it is bloody huge !

We are redecorating out living room and I was so excited that I could finally have my Neptune like room. Something stylish and calm and inviting.

I now have the monster on my wall ! And I have it :(

I now have no idea how to stylus around it !! Any ideas??

I am feeling unreasonably upset about this and I just can’t get over it.

our room is only 4m x 3.5m so not a large room at all

AIBU?

help me to her over it please or share tips to make the room work

I thought our 30 inch tv was big when we got it, quite a lot of years ago now. I'm sure I would get used to a really big one, and I agree it would be good for sport. But I'd be pretty irritated if anyone in the house just turned up with one. Our opposite neighbours have one on their wall and we can see what they are watching from our house in winter, if they don't close the curtains ( I close mine if they don't close theirs because it feels like inadvertent stalking) It's not a criticism, just an observation.
My mum could do with a bigger telly because her lounge is big and her eyesight is bad. But she won't because she's of the generation that thinks watching TV in the day is quite decadent - shameful even. We had a small tv when I was growing up, and she has always has a box around it to hide it when it wasn't in use.

Among other things…

I'm so confused.

Why is it naff? Among what other things?

I have lots of book and I'm a single mom? Is that naff? Lol

Hate big TVs. Ugly black blocks in what should be a restful space.
I have the 55 Samsung Frame Art TV. Oak frame and Matt screen with a restful image on. Van Gogh this week 🙂

I think our TV must be about 50 inches. I've never measured it. DS2 gave it to us when he swapped to a projector.
I didn't want it at all and he teased me for being a snob and then brought it up anyway.
I have unconsciously followed JaninaDuszejko's tips, by having it in a large, dark painted room that is full of floor to ceiling bookshelves. It is on a wall but not above the fireplace. It is on a mount that pulls out and swivels about.
It is absolutely brilliant for the Snooker.

longtompot · 04/08/2024 10:35

Yanbu @Itssobig I still remember when my dh & our three kids came back from the shops with what was then a massive flat screen tv! I was furious as I hate tvs dominating the living room. I just have it in a corner so it's not so obvious it's there. It helps if the frame is dark, our first one was silver!
But, having said all that, it is so much better for watching films & programmes, and I wouldn't go back to a small screen. Our current living room is about 3.5m x 4.5m so not much bigger than yours. The tv is in an alcove on an adjustable wall bracket and the wall in the alcove is dark blue which helps disguise it a bit.

The bigger the box the fewer the books…

That is pure bullshit

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 04/08/2024 18:11

We have a similar sized TV and room, I built a media wall and inset a fireplace.

Oh god I hate huge TV’s in small rooms. Why do men want such a massive TV?
To compensate for their wee dick size!!

shrumps · 04/08/2024 18:57

Exactly the same thing happened to me! I was horrified, but honestly they are quite normal now and I do love it now I’ve got used to it x

MagneticSquirrel · 03/08/2024 21:05

YABU it seems huge now, you’ll get used to it very quickly and being able to see all the details when watching sports and films!
Olympics on a big TV is great!

I can’t imagine going back to even a 48/50 inch tv now and I don’t even watch that much tv lol.

Yes! Every four years you’ll be glad he bought it!

ElephantilonZed · 04/08/2024 19:16

What's a Neptune like room?

Well this was a misleading title. Slightky disappointed if I am honest😅

GasPanic · 04/08/2024 20:45

All I can say is the person that thinks that a "large" room can be "dominated" by a 32" TV is completely clueless. Unless their living room doubles as the downstairs toilet.

Why do some people (in particular men?) prefer large TVs ? Simple answer, they are great for sports fans, especially for football and other team sports where a large TV can help you see the players in a lot more detail.

I have a 48" OLED TV and the picture is just outstanding. The Olympics are a real event on it.

Doubledenim305 · 04/08/2024 20:54

Do really big TVs look grainy and lose definition on most programmes. That would be my concern.

If you're referring to my post yesterday, then yes, my 32" TV does dominate the corner of the living room. I watch the TV for maybe a couple of hours a day, and don't want it to be a feature for the rest of the day. My living room is 22'x 17', so a reasonable size, but I find a 32" TV is perfectly adequate. We bought a TV for our conservatory last year and bought another 32" because we both felt anything larger would be too big.

ChubSeedsYorkie · 04/08/2024 21:36

Yanbu I hate big oversized TVs we used to have a 32 inch in our first house and then moved to a bigger lounge so have gone up to 43 inch and that feels big, but also needed as you can’t see we’ll from the far corner of the sofa but 65 inch seems massive! I can’t imagine there are that many rooms that can pull off a 65 inch without it dominating.

BlueYazoo · 04/08/2024 21:43

The comments do not disappoint 😂”I don’t have a telly, I live in a cave and we dance round the fire making shadows for entertainment”. Good old MN

Ridiculous comment. Just because some people have said they don't like gigantic TVs.

It's hardly like they're saying people should sit there watching one programme a week on their tiny black and white cathode ray tube tv is it.

me109f · 04/08/2024 22:26

Getting the size of TV right is a bit of an art. The bigger the better, but there is such a thing as too big. Once upon a time you could get a folding-out sheet that had the different sizes of TV screen on it so you could hold it up and size it to your room. I have a 65 " screen and it is perfect for my room which is 22ftx13ft. Since the last decade or so TVs have become progressively larger, and it usally usually the men who choose the size (and get it wrong!). I think it is related to a football/movie watching experience.
I sit at least 15ft from my TV, which feels about right. In the last 15 years I have gone from 38" to 46" to 55" to 65". Any bigger and I think it would be just too dominating. I have seen a number of idiots who end up sitting with their faces only 6 ft from a screen that is too large. They are usually trying to impress their mates.

bobster31 · 05/08/2024 02:24

I hate huge TVs too. When we needed a new one recently I specifically asked for a smaller one, DH came back with a bigger one - so big we had to buy a new unit for it to sit on. I hate it!

FussyPud · 05/08/2024 03:04

I bought a big tv a few years ago, and didn’t get used to it at all. I was quite happy when it got broken by the toddler, and I replaced it with something much smaller. That’s not to say I judge those who like the bigger screens, I just couldn’t get comfortable with it.

I’m now at the point where I watch so little tv that the one I have will last longer than me! I’m in my napping and listening to Spotify section of life. Grin

Josette77 · 05/08/2024 03:05

I'm watching The Good Girls Guide To Murder on my giant TV and it's heaven.
