Sorry if the title is slightly misleading! 😆

My partner has bought a 65 inch tv and it is bloody huge !

We are redecorating out living room and I was so excited that I could finally have my Neptune like room. Something stylish and calm and inviting.

I now have the monster on my wall ! And I have it :(

I now have no idea how to stylus around it !! Any ideas??

I am feeling unreasonably upset about this and I just can’t get over it.

our room is only 4m x 3.5m so not a large room at all

AIBU?

help me to her over it please or share tips to make the room work

No matter how big the tv is you still get crappy programmes.

The only TV tip I have is to not put it above a fireplace unless you have a big room! I hate watching it now because my neck is at such an unnatural angle, I actually preferred it when it was on the floor before I put it up. I think mine is 50ish inches so you’d be looking up even higher with yours!

Oh actually I have another one. On YouTube there are videos of photos of art that change every 30 mins that can help to disguise it without needing a special TV. And in the winter crackling fire videos make the living room feel very cosy when you’re chatting

....in winter, above your fireplace, you have a video of a fire in a fireplace....

So - among other questions - is it weirder if you also have a real fire going, or when you have video going of a fire above a fireplace with no fire in it?

Gasp! Is there ever any quiet in your house?

we are a a household of ASD,ADHD people(me included)
so its not quiet any way

timetostartbeingme · 03/08/2024 22:36

We've got a 70inch TV in a standard size room, it did take some getting used to however it's just the normal now! If I had a £1 for every time somebody has visited and commented on it though!
Yourll get used to it :)

Walked into costco the other day and saw this …..

100 Inch ………….GET IN !!!!!!!!!!!

We just got an 100 inch in the den! It is way too big for the space but I never go in there so don't care and DH is happy.

AskMeTomorrow · 03/08/2024 22:40

If my partner had done this I’d be asking him to make sure it fitted in the new place he and his tv would be moving to! I’m not much of a tv watcher and really dislike when they’re the focal point of the whole living room. The 32” we have looks too big to me - appreciate I’m probably in a minority though lol.
DB has a huge tv that totally overwhelms the room and is so big people at the bus stop 100m away can see what he’s watching!

PerfectTravelTote · 03/08/2024 21:52

At 85 inches you may as well call it a cinema and be done with it.

He would happily agree with wanting it to be like a cinema screen, as one of his favourite things to do is to watch movies. We bought the 65 in 2019, if it needs replacing at any point, I have no doubt it will be bigger. Discussions about size will be had though.

Badgertime · 03/08/2024 22:44

FFS OP. I thought we had a juicy read here before bed.

A TV! 😱

Wingingitbestican · 03/08/2024 22:45

We purchased an 85” just a few weeks ago. Joint decision between me and husband, we both love it.

DreamTheMoors · 03/08/2024 22:48

The same way you pronounce “meatloaf” in French, @Itssobig

You don’t. lol

That’s ok if you are single but not so good if you want to watch something as a family/group.

We have a projector for the same reason, it just projects on to the wall so no screen needed. Really good alternative for anyone who doesn't want a TV dominating the room.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 03/08/2024 22:55

We have a colossal TV.

It's one of the odd things H has bought since his major surgery left him with an odd personality change.

I'm embarrassed when visitors comment on it.

Devonbabs · 03/08/2024 22:55

It will probably fall off the wall and you can use the insurance money to purchase a reasonable size one.

I think big TVs are awful, if the dominate the room it says a lot about the owners.

Tristar15 · 03/08/2024 22:56

Big televisions are chavvy and having them on the wall is even more chavvy so I get that you’re upset. You’ll have to get him to change it.

Cerialkiller · 03/08/2024 23:04

AutumnCrow · 03/08/2024 21:36

Now that, my friend, is fucking genius.

I was going to suggest something like this. A canvas in a matching size with a calming art piece you can hook over, a pulldown blind with the same, wall hanging, tv case, drape a big piece of lace over it, etc etc. could be stylist

Didimum · 03/08/2024 23:04

I hate big TVs. We have one TV in our house and it’s small, so I can understand the annoyance. Aren’t you more annoyed he just got it without discussing it?

Pull-down mount. TV lives on the chimney-breast, then when you want to watch it, you pull it forward and down so it's at the right height, in front of the fireplace. You can even get motorised remote-control ones.

I guess just don't pull it down in front of the fireplace when there's a fire going…

JaninaDuszejko · 03/08/2024 23:14

So depending on the cost and your income he should have discussed it with you. To minimise the impact do the following:

  1. Have at least the wall it is on painted a dark colour to visually disguise it
  2. Surround it with shelving with books and ornaments so there are other things to look at rather than the TV
  3. Think carefully about where you position it in the room, preferably don't have it diagonally across from the door because then it dominates the view as you come in. If it on the same wall as the door it's partially hidden so that's a good option. If that's not possible we have the TV in our sitting room opposite the door when looking in with bookshelves above it and a sofa in front so you eye sweeps ove it when you come in and when we have guests some people aren't looking at the TV which helps.
K0OLA1D · 03/08/2024 23:15

DP got our 65 inch TV just before lock down. I eyerolled at first, but grew to love it

Awh I am so far away from chav. Well half chav, because ours is on a solid oak unit, to match my 2 bulging floor to ceiling bookcases 😉

I'm not keen on big TVs either.

But what does it say about the owners?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 03/08/2024 23:19

@ALPHAFEMALESINCEBIRTH blimey!
In contrast I home educated and was a full time carer for over a decade with one laptop and one 19" telly (and no tv licence)
Not saying your way is wrong....... but its certainly the opposite of mine!

Ilovelifeverymuch · 03/08/2024 23:21

haplessharpy · 03/08/2024 20:54

Yeah, I'm with the PP who thinks the bigger the better. My lounge is quite large and my telly is huge, but I'd live bigger!

I love a big TV as well but it depends on the room size. In a small room it looks out of place and uncomfortable if you have to look up etc

distinctpossibility · 03/08/2024 23:21

Love a big tv and think you'll get used to it. Who cares if it's "chavvy" 🙄 Let's face it most people's living rooms are FOR watching tv (however much we like to insist we'll also be playing Scrabble, conversing and doing macrame regularly) so might as well do tv well.
