These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

Reform got 14% of the votes cast. . 2% more than the lib dems

Woopy doo. 14% doesn’t speak for the uk particularly when it only means 5 seats.

Farage seems a bit quiet. Funny that.

Only 31% wanted Brexit and it’s even less popular now the reality of what Brexit has hit home. The vast majority of the country know what the currant Reform Stop the Boats chant is- ignorant racism.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 03/08/2024 20:33

I’m sad to see this. I was born in Hull, lived there until 1996 and then moved south of the Humber before emigrating to Canada in 2011.

I very nearly had my wedding reception at the Paragon. Mind you, that was 29 years ago. Sad to see how things change. I was surprised to see a PP post that the William
Booth had closed. I remember that being built!

Flibflobflibflob · 03/08/2024 20:36

I voted YABU because you are not responsible for the action of others x

14% is still alot of votes for such a newly formed party, when you consider the tory party got 24% and labour 34%

14% doesn’t speak for the uk. But its still al lot of votes from people who want change from the big 2 party’s

34% for labour is not exactly the uk either, but someones got to govern and thats democracy ……

Personally i cant see labour being much different from the tories but time will tell I suppose.

One thing i can see in the next 4 years is if the current government fails to bring any changes in to the immigration system then reform will increase its share of the vote considerably.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/08/2024 20:43

Aren't we encouraged to not be proud of anything GB does? When has anyone puffed themselves up about anything recently?

Sure, be proud of anything you like but if that comes with self-absorbed navel-gazing and attention-seeking blaming just because you live in a place that's in negative news then it smacks of that awful but apt phrase, 'grief vulture-ing'.

What's happened is shocking. Everybody is shocked and feeling sad for the families involved. Most are not heaping coals on their head for living in the locality because it's not about them.

Pebbles16 · 03/08/2024 20:44

Chester23 · 03/08/2024 20:30

This wasn't the point of this post. So I apologise for that.
I'm very disappointed in people today. I understand immigration has issues but this is not what was needed.

I know that wan't the point of your very genuine post. I am deeply embarrassed to be a UK citizen today. And also fairly embarrassed by the posters who perpetuate hate.
This
"Maybe we should build a bridge from France to the uk so people can walk over in safety instead of the dangerous boat crossing. That way more of them could come over , and they wouldn’t have to give any money to the smugglers?

All paid for by taxpayers money of course. Im sure that would be a great vote winner for the party that bought that in ?"
is a prime example

2dogsandabudgie · 03/08/2024 20:45

That chart is very misleading.

Out of those 19 countries on the list down to the UK, there are only 3 which are smaller in land mass size compared to the UK. One is the same size and the rest (16 countries) are larger than the UK. Some considerably larger, so I think the UK takes its fair share of refugees.

Reform are just whipping up an alleged immigration problem to cover up the lack of investment in services and the focus on the right of just helping the rich.

The UK isn’t so dumb it won’t learn from Brexit.

We need immigration.

Many citizens are ashamed of the community around them at the minute.

Tough thugs….except the dog bitten Hartlepool thug sobbed through his court appearance. Sobered up clearly.
A gay man too, I'm sure he knows what prejudice feels like too.
Drunken idiot.

He got bit on the arse by a police dog and never spilt a drop from his can of beer!

Mindless idiots.

ExtraOnions · 03/08/2024 20:51

Farage, Tice & his ilk appeal to these people, as they give seemingly easy answers to complex problems (answers that won’t work)
They finger point at a group who have nothing to do with the problems the country is having .. let’s face it, rent-a-mob aren’t interested in Fiscal Policy, International Trade, the complexities of the current geo-political situation. They are thick, they want to believe it’s all about “people on boats”
These rioters must be thick .. getting caught on camera, looting - when they end up in Prison for 12 months due stealing a pair of Crocs, they will have plenty of time to read up on these things.

2dogsandabudgie · 03/08/2024 20:51

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/08/2024 19:05

@2dogsandabudgie good thing we aren't then. We are very far down the list of countries in terms of the volumes of asylum seekers and refugees we take.

I agree we should not take everyone who wants to be here regardless of reason, but we have a moral duty to run a humane and decent immigration and asylum system.

My family is descended on both sides from peoples who found sancturary in the UK from religious and ethnic persecution.

There for the grace of god and all that.

Edited

Not compared to land mass size we're not. That has to be taken into consideration, so actually we do take our fair share.

Old town is beautiful. I had only ever seen it drunk 😂, but walked through one day and thought wow.
But I dont blame them. I think it will take a while to get back to normal

It is wonderful and I wandered round there quite a lot as a teen just for the ambience (and the fact that there was a shop there that my goth boyfriend frequented!) long time go, back when Greggs and Cooplands were Fletchers and Skeltons and Allders and Debenhams had haberdasheries and Prince's quay was a twinkle in the council's eye...

It's not really a new party. UKIP, led by Nigel Farage, got 12.6% of the vote in 2015, and the Brexit Party, led by Nigel Farage, would probably have got about the same share in 2019 if they had not abstained from fielding candidates in constituencies held by the Tories. So for the Reform party, led by Nigel Farage, to get 14.3% (on a smaller turnout: 4.12 million votes versus 3.88 million) in 2024 does not represent a huge insurgency. The Reform voter demographic is very similar to that of UKIP.

Quite and given the shocking state the Tories have plunged the country into if all Reform could do is maintain in the last election they’re pretty screwed.

I just wish they wouldn’t drink. We do need to take Britain back, but we’ll never get it back with these men behind the protests. Their behaviour makes a mockery out of a very real problem!

Get Britain back from who?

I really have chosen not to read a lot of the responses on this post because it's descended into hatred and general disingenuity. I am, however, worried that this is what our country looks like to the world

I doubt other countries are that bothered to be honest. They have their own problems to deal with.

Yes, exactly. Newly formed party my backside. Reform UK PLC is UKIP with a new coat of paint. It will never be a major political party.

Strawbag6364 · 03/08/2024 21:04

Look at the demographic of the 2 sides filmed in the media.

Over weight, white, balding, beer drinking men V everybody else.

Looking today it was a mixture of all types of people. Towards the end mainly young people who I assume jumped in on the "fun". Some of whom are heard on videos saying they don't know what it's for.

Hopefully anything will work better than the hideously expensive Rwanda nonsense.

I saw a poster suggesting we sent the rioters to Rwanda 🤔 It could work. Or we could put them on the Bibby Stockholm and moor it out at sea somewhere. White people only. They can keep it exactly how they want it

I'm not embarrassed to be from Hull. I'm fuming that people are doing this to our beautiful city. Especially on Sesh day where people go to have a lovely time and where Hull is typically at its best.
