These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

people want change in the way immigration is controlled but the government are doing too little

4 weeks is a bit of a short timescale in which to sort immigration issues out, tbf!

It’s not great to lose control so quickly but what do you expect Labour will do to sort immigration issues out?

Oh sorry i didnt realise there had only been a government in this country for the last 4 weeks.

I agree the Tories have done nothing for 14 years, apart from cook up stupid schemes that waste millions of pounds of taxpayers money. Hopefully Labour will get the asylum process back to some sort of functionality.

By doing what?

It's so awful isnt it- I feel really upset about it.
Our beautiful city- how dare they.
This city has always welcomed those in need and this is just horrible..

I just can't believe it. I can't believe people were acting like they were having the time of their life, "let's go get some beers". I have never felt unsafe in Hull but I dont know how I will feel next time I have to go to city centre.

When you look at countries like france and spain that are many times bigger than the uk ,the numbers are still not equal ….. the uk is tiny in comparison but they keep coming in large numbers……..this can’t continue for ever and there needs to be control over it …….

just look how many votes reform got in the last election… people want change in the way immigration is controlled but the government are doing too little.

Rioting is not the answer, but there are a lot of people in this country that agree things need to change.

Yes, Reform did get a lot of votes. As I recall Ben Habib was in favour of allowing asylum seekers to drown. Do you think that is a viable way of addressing asylum seekers coming to the UK?

Unforgettablefire · 03/08/2024 19:53

@TattiePants good natured banter...It is until our teams meet. (I'm black and white)

TattiePants · 03/08/2024 19:58

@Unforgettablefire definitely make an exception for Derby games! Although they're few and far between now.

grafittiartist · 03/08/2024 19:58

Chester23 I agree.
How can anyone cat as if they would enjoy this.
I haven't seen much footage- thank goodness. Just heard police sirens and that picture of the fires behind Spring bank.

Laserwho · 03/08/2024 19:59

In Hull hospitals are reporting that doctors and nurses carnt get in and out of hospitals safely to change shifts. Truly despicable what's happing in Hull and many other areas.

My mum and sister were going to go on the tour of the Old Town, tomorrow but don't want to, now.

grafittiartist · 03/08/2024 20:03

That's sad - the old town is definitely worth visiting. But yes- feels a different place at the moment.

PickAChew · 03/08/2024 20:08

My parents grew up in Hull @grafittiartist but mum was looking forward to seeing it all from a different angle. This is not quite the angle anticipated 😕

grafittiartist · 03/08/2024 20:13

Indeed!
At least she knows that it is usually very different!

TheDogIsInCharge · 03/08/2024 20:13

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 03/08/2024 17:27

Sorry but it just isn't what it was, at least in certain places. It's very different. We might as well be not in the UK anymore. That's how it appears.

Well at least we know who all the racists are now.

I lived among very racist people for ages. And because I wasn't white Engerlish (but white British... ) I was told to fuck off back home on many an occasion. I thought people like that had disappeared from mainstream view, only sharing their hateful ideology amongst fellow fash. And now here they are again, in full sight, happy to show off their bigotry, their Nazi tattoos, their violent tendencies and zeig heiling like their grandparents hadn't fought against this shit in WW2

Hateful scum, the lot of them. And everyone defending them with "but we need to take our country back" and "we need to fight our cause." Just say you're a nasty racist - fewer letters.

samarrange · 03/08/2024 20:14

RationalityIsHard · 03/08/2024 18:08

Are they needed to keep the economy going though? Or are they needed to make sure wages are suppressed and companies don't need to pay any more than they want to?
I suspect that it actually falls somewhere between the two but there is no doubt in my mind that wages are lower in my industry (tech) because of a combination of outsourcing overseas and imported labour.

Oh, sure. This is a standard discussion about the US, too. Thomas Friedman's book "The world is flat" from 2005(-ish) talks about a forthcoming realignment of left-right to what he calls the "Web party" (tech businesses, free-movement, social liberals) and the "Wall party" (organised labour, anti-immigration, social conservatives), and I think we are seeing some of that play out.

But this is mostly a problem for the Tories. Their paymasters, generally speaking, want immigration so that labour becomes cheaper, and don't tend to live in Stoke or Hull, or have kids who are having trouble scraping together a deposit. And post-Brexit they came to rely far more on Red Wall voters, who are more sensitive to immigration issues than the average voter in Amersham.

Of course it's all a lot more complicated than that because things are never that simple (for example, companies only want to pay low wages to their own employees; they would like every other company to pay their staff high wages so their customers have more purchasing power). But then, everything is more complicated than that. ¯\(ツ)/¯

No i don’t , but then i didn’t vote reform.

Maybe we should build a bridge from France to the uk so people can walk over in safety instead of the dangerous boat crossing. That way more of them could come over , and they wouldn’t have to give any money to the smugglers?

All paid for by taxpayers money of course. Im sure that would be a great vote winner for the party that bought that in ?

Did reform get a lot of votes? They got 5 seats. I don’t notice them being in power.

Hopefully anything will work better than the hideously expensive Rwanda nonsense.

I really have chosen not to read a lot of the responses on this post because it's descended into hatred and general disingenuity. I am, however, worried that this is what our country looks like to the world

Reform got 14% of the votes cast. . 2% more than the lib dems

mothsandgoths · 03/08/2024 20:26

@Ponkpinkpink15 Decency and community you say! Did you see the people of Southport rebuilding a wall (smashed by thugs). Did you see the people of Liverpool standing to protect their community from thugs!

What more do you want

This wasn't the point of this post. So I apologise for that.
I'm very disappointed in people today. I understand immigration has issues but this is not what was needed.
