To be embarrassed to be from Hull right now?

These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

@TattiePants it's just ridiculous isn't it. My son and his friends were planning on going to the game shack and cinema for one of their birthdays today, glad we said no!

Hoping it doesn't start again later as businesses seem to be bracing themselves for another kick off.

GoldenLegend · 03/08/2024 19:03

most of them won’t be local

Do you think the UK is the only country taking in asylum seekers?

Of course not but there needs to be a cap on numbers allowed in.

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/08/2024 19:05

@2dogsandabudgie good thing we aren't then. We are very far down the list of countries in terms of the volumes of asylum seekers and refugees we take.

I agree we should not take everyone who wants to be here regardless of reason, but we have a moral duty to run a humane and decent immigration and asylum system.

My family is descended on both sides from peoples who found sancturary in the UK from religious and ethnic persecution.

There for the grace of god and all that.

I'm in favour of legal routes and international collaboration between Western countries to arrange for a rational distribution of genuine asylum seekers. I'm also in favour of investment in countries of origin, many of which are former colonies which have been asset stripped by the West, to reduce the pull factors involved. All of this is going to take time, money and hard work. Meanwhile supporting those fleeing war and oppression would be a start. The UK is, as has been mentioned, 83% white. The lack of housing, schools, hospitals etc. can be laid directly at the feet of Tory austerity.

I would also favour allowing asylum seekers to work while their claim is pending.

None of this happened under the previous administration. The current government has been in power for 4 weeks. Give them a chance to get started.

I note though that you don't actually answer any of my questions. How many legal routes and how many refugees\asylum seekers?

Also, how would you decide, if you do want a limit, which ones to let in and which to keep out when, under the UN convention, they will all probably have a good case to be regarded as genuine?

I am though, like you, in favour of investing some money to try and persuade people from leaving by improving conditions there and I would also like us to stop interfering in other countries affairs. The former colonies have by no means been asset stripped by us though - otherwise China would not be so desperately building influence and power in Africa. I feel no more guilt for what happened during the British Empire than I imagine the average Italian feels for the Roman Empire.

GoldenLegend · 03/08/2024 19:06

2dogsandabudgie · 03/08/2024 18:50

The UK is not the answer to the world's problems. We can't just let everyone who wants to come to the UK in.

We don’t, you moron.

pointythings · 03/08/2024 19:06

I don't know the numbers, but I would look at the number per 1000 head of population that is taken by other countries and then make sure the UK sits somewhere around or slightly above the average.

Diyextension · 03/08/2024 19:07

According to that chart the uk only took in 25,000 less refugees than America !!!!! Not much difference in the size of the countries is there ?

CharlotteLucas3 · 03/08/2024 19:08

What’s it got to do with you? If someone in my town does something stupid, it’s nothing to do with me. It’s just unfortunate for me that I live near them.

Humans place themselves in groups in order to form their identity (see Tajfel’s social identity theory) and then they defend their group and denigrate other groups in order to maintain their sense of self worth. (It’s pretty obvious really, but a few psychologists researched this sort of thing after world war 2.)

This is because most neurotypical humans are stupid.

2dogsandabudgie · 03/08/2024 19:04

Of course not but there needs to be a cap on numbers allowed in.

That would be very difficult.

Scenario: we have reached the yearly cap you want to introduce. Putin invades Poland. Polish women and children flee. Do we say, sorry rest of Europe we won't be helping out?

Werweisswohin · 03/08/2024 19:10

No, you shouldn't be embarrassed unless you've been joining in - which I assume you haven't. There are idiots everywhere, lots of them were in power and allowed this country to start falling apart.

catwithflowers · 03/08/2024 19:11

I live in the North East and there was a similar scene in Sunderland last night. An absolute disgrace. I'm certainly not embarrassed to be from this region but am ashamed of the behaviour of some others a tiny minority who live here. ☹️.

My son is a firefighter and was on duty last night. I was very worried about him. Everyone we know is appalled.

Kriscross · 03/08/2024 19:14

I've visited Hull and it was lovely and so were the people I met. A few people do not mean all the same.

Interesting that you picked up on that rather than comparing our intake to other countries in Europe and nearer home, some of which are these safe countries you probably think they should settle in, regardless of the 1951 Convention. The USA is only a signatory to the protocol, not to the convention.

grafittiartist · 03/08/2024 19:16

In Hull and also feel awful about it all.
There's a brilliant music festival in at the moment- and that should be the focus of the weekend- not these thugs.
Pathetic.

Would these polish women and children be giving there life savings to people smugglers and risking their lives in dingy’s to get here ?

i dont think anyone has any problems with legal war refugees, its the illegal ones that cross into the country every day that governments do nothing to combat.

There will be a lot worse to come unless the country gets serious about controlling the amount that continue to come in.

There are a lot of refugees here that are not from countries at war ……….

Great. A race to the bottom UK V USA. Look how many countries take more.

Chester23 · 03/08/2024 19:20

I'm just devastated. People are trying to clean up while shops are on fire around them.

Immigrants have not done this to my city. English people have. What do you gain by destroying the place you live?

They are not illegal refugees. There is no such thing.

I really can't be arsed.

@Chester23 try not to despair 💐

They're not illegal until their asylum applications are refused.

The previous government only seemed to place migrants in areas with a Labour MP.

"seemed to" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

When you look at countries like france and spain that are many times bigger than the uk ,the numbers are still not equal ….. the uk is tiny in comparison but they keep coming in large numbers……..this can’t continue for ever and there needs to be control over it …….

just look how many votes reform got in the last election… people want change in the way immigration is controlled but the government are doing too little.

Rioting is not the answer, but there are a lot of people in this country that agree things need to change.

4 weeks is a bit of a short timescale in which to sort immigration issues out, tbf!

Our beautiful city- how dare they.
This city has always welcomed those in need and this is just horrible..
