These "protests" just look like a load of people out for a fight. People on live steams talking about going to get beer and seem to be having a great time.
Causes are lost because of reasons like this? Why would I support you when you are destroying my city? Setting fire to bins? Throwing all sorts at the police. I can't support this.

You do realise that asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants until they fail to leave if their applications are refused after they've been processed?

But you do understand that many of the asylum seekers that come over to this country have crossed alot of safe countries to get here. .?

i could this coming 10-15 years ago , its only going to get worse until this country gets serious about immigration and the costs that it bring with it.

LlynTegid · 03/08/2024 18:38

OP you are right and I agree with your condemnation of what has happened in Hull and other places.

Hull when I have visited seems to have had limited investment despite being City of Culture.

The whole of the east coast needs investment.

Part of the issue in that area isn't the immigrants as such, its that the government has dumped them there with no investment in the infrastructure to support the influx of new people.

So I presume you are in favour of legal routes then, yes? If so, how many would you like to be set up, where would you do it, and how many refugees should we invite into our country? Because there are millions of people who would qualify for refugee status and, with climate change doing its thing, that's only going to increase.

Unless you're in favour of there being no limit (which would be batshit), then actually you're closer to the position of the person saying they want no refugees than you might like to think.

Edited

More qualified minds than mine, who have the files of the country finances and all the relevant knowledge can look into the logistics of how to improve refugees application processing, and how many should be allowed etc. definitely a job for a policy maker. Which is why I’m wondering what Labour will do about it, if anything.

I have some ideas but that’s a whole other discussion for another thread. The main point I was making which is more closely related to the thread topic - is that all those I’ve encountered who spin the line about them using legal routes are being disingenuous. There will be many of these sorts of people in these riots claiming the same - that it’s about law and order and peope doing things the legal way.

I’ve found the people who say this sort of thing are often always prejudice against ALL non-white refugees as well as legal immigrants. They literally don’t care how people came in.

Lifeomars · 03/08/2024 18:44

What is their "cause" other than stirring up hate, division, while drunk and coked up. They are the very worst of this country, thick and easily manipulated by the likes of Farage and Tice and their bit of rough Anderson and egged on by Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins.

From now.
Take Britain back to the glorious days of the Empire, obviously.
Woolton pies, the nit lady, gin was tuppence a bag and everyone had rickets.
BUT IT WAS BETTER THEN!!!

And other lunatic nonsense from the embittered right...

I don't think any of them have ever actually answered the question, so we can only assume it is that sort of crap.

Lifeomars · 03/08/2024 18:48

2dogsandabudgie · 03/08/2024 18:24

Yes there are legal routes.

Please can you go into more detail

I don't imagine many people on the streets at the moment will be saying 'well they should use legal routes'! That's giving them far too much credit if you ask me.

I do think you're right though and that many people saying that would actually prefer no asylum seekers at all.

Conversely, I also think that those in favour of open borders and increasing the number of refugees we take in via legal routes are also similarly hard of thinking and have in no way considered the logistics or the implications.

I'm not questioning their empathy and I know who I'd rather be sitting down to a meal with, but this is not the kind of situation where being 'nice' is going to cut it.

Imagine having all the benefits of being born in a decent, well ordered, democratic country with free health care and free education from 5 to 18 and being jealous of people fleeing a life of persecution or economic misery to living in a shit a temporary hotel and get £40 or so a week to live on.

The UK is not the answer to the world's problems. We can't just let everyone who wants to come to the UK in.

I think people need to be more realistic about what the options are

It’s either deterrent like Aus and calm or Labour’s approach which brings disorder

Thank you for this post. And I will add that if food is provided, then the weekly allowance is £8.86, to cover clothing, toiletries and everything else. Perhaps including additional food, as I've seen examples of some of the catering provided - low quality, sometimes small portions, sometimes quite nasty looking food I feel very fortunate not to have to consume. And people are jealous of this!

Are you saying that because there are safe countries on the way to our island we aren't obligated to accept anyone passing through them?

Well yeah, but there's a reason for that.

Tories.

Exactly, people have misplaced anger about immigrants when it's the Tory government's political choices that have broken the country.

Bouledeneige · 03/08/2024 18:54

The leader of Stoke city council has made a statement saying there were no stabbings in Hanley today and warning people not to believe misinformation and untruths being circulated on social media.

I saw a message on X/Twitter which was putting forward that info and I could sense it wasn't truthful.

I'm in favour of legal routes and international collaboration between Western countries to arrange for a rational distribution of genuine asylum seekers. I'm also in favour of investment in countries of origin, many of which are former colonies which have been asset stripped by the West, to reduce the pull factors involved. All of this is going to take time, money and hard work. Meanwhile supporting those fleeing war and oppression would be a start. The UK is, as has been mentioned, 83% white. The lack of housing, schools, hospitals etc. can be laid directly at the feet of Tory austerity.

I would also favour allowing asylum seekers to work while their claim is pending.

None of this happened under the previous administration. The current government has been in power for 4 weeks. Give them a chance to get started.

That may well be true, but there are a lot of people who aren't on the streets, and are also not thick or drunk, who have a great amount of sympathy with some of the things they are saying. You only have to look at the comments on some of the national newspaper websites to see that.

Dismissing them all is not going to make them go away.

The previous government only seemed to place migrants in areas with a Labour MP.
